WIAW: Cinco De Mayo

Cinco Cinco Cinco De Mayoooo … woopwoop! That’s right, I’m sharing my Cinco De Mayo eats for  What I Ate Wednesday. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a very Mexican-themed day–but I did try with dinner!

The day started with the return of the smoothie bowl! It had some vanilla protein powder, ice and some frozen blueberries and raspberries. I had not had one of these in AGES and it was so good!

Lunch was a ginormous salad I had made – so good. It had a little bit of chicken, broccoli, cauliflower, feta, avocado, tomato and a Japanese sweet potato (hidden).20160505_123904

And then I headed out to Barrio to celebrate Cinco De Mayo! I didn’t imbibe and only could be there for a little, but thy do have the best chips and salsa.

Before dinner, I admit I had another sweet snack – one of these freshly baked chocolate chip cookies. It was SO good.

Dinner was semi-Cinco De Mayo themed? I made some cilantro lime quinoa with avocado, feta, broccoli and black beans. I paired it with some chicken and cumin/lime roasted potatoes and cauliflower.

Confession – I couldn’t finish my plate. I’ve been getting super full while pregnant and my stomach was too full to finish dinner. After dinner, I made some granola, but somehow found room for a bowl 🙂 You know, for quality control.grnaola

 

I really wanted to do more Cinco De Mayo themed food and even a fun dessert (homemade churros perhaps?) but pregnancy fatigue sat in and I was too tired after dinner and making granola to do much else. Still, a satisfying What I Ate Wednesday.

Training Tuesday: It’s Race Week!

YOU GUYS- IT’S HERE. Cleveland Marathon Race Week!

In the words of Jessie Spano, I’m so excited…I’m so excited… I’m so..I’m so.. Scared?!

I’ve never been scared by a 10k before. No, typically this time of year I’m ready to run the half marathon or even gasp (once, sorta) the marathon. But this year, things are different. I’m doing the 5k 10k Challenge series.

In case you’re new to the blog or living under a rock, I’m pretty pretty pregnant. So needless to say, running has been a little … interesting?

How I think I look running:

This past week, my runs have included runs/walks with me stopping for 1 (or 2) bathroom breaks. Stopping because of a cramp. Or Braxton Hicks. Or just because my legs are darn tired and my uterus hurts.

That being said, I did get in some miles – and even if I’m not in the best physical shape of my life right now, I am so emotionally ready for race weekend where I’ll be attempting to run the 5k and 10k Challenge Series.

Week of May 1: 15.23 miles – lowest week. ever. but i don’t care – almost race day!

Sunday: 0 miles!

B and I were in Boston, then flew back and I emceed a banquet, and we didn’t get home home until around 5 p.m. where I was too exhausted to even complete making dinner. So no runs.

Tuesday: 3.53 miles outside plus walking cooldown

Run with two walking breaks with a running buddy! It only took me 8 months, but I finally ran with another friend who lives downtown. I felt bad that we were going so slow, I wasn’t really able to talk and keep up the pace- but we did it!

Wednesday: 4.11 miles outside plus .5 walking cooldown inside

Run with B! This one did not start well – I made B change our route about a mile in because the baby was pushing on my bladder waaay too much and I wasn’t sure if I’d need a bathroom break. Felt better a few miles and a walking breaks in but still stopped for a quick pit stop.

Thursday: elliptical
Somehow slept through my alarm- but managed it in about 55 minutes on the elliptical. At least I finally got some sleep!

Friday: 5.5 miles- 4.5 run outside with a little walk and 1 mile cooldown inside

Another run with Erica! We had to stop and walk only once, but I did stop and take this photo. It was just a gorgeous morning!

Saturday: no run, just a walk with Jane. We walked to Ohio City and around the area, getting in about 10,000 steps.

A Weekend With My BFF

One of my best friends, Jane, visited me in CLE this weekend for one last hoorah / girls weekend before the baby is born. It was pretty much the weekend that any pregnant gal could ask for – lots of relaxing, some walking, great weather, tons of food and ice cream.

The weekend was supposed to start with a cooking class – but unfortunately Jane’s flight had a 4 hour delay and she didn’t get in until close to 10 p.m. 😦 We did pick up some delicious Taza, however, and enjoyed catching up over some delicious Lebanese takeout.

Saturday was gorgeous in the morning, we we decided to walk to Ohio City for brunch and tea. I have never been to the West Side Market Cafe for brunch before and it was great – we split a cornbread waffle and huevos rancheros. The perfect sweet/savory combo!

Then we hit up the Market for a few goodies, and walked to Cleveland Tea Revival for some iced tea for our walk home.

We spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing, gossiping about high school friends, watching Netflix, etc. You know – normal girls weekend activities. It was great! I even snuck in a short nap before dinner – Superior Pho.

We stayed up late chatting more and watching The Princess Bride before passing out on the couch.

Sunday morning was pretty lazy as well – we had some breakfast at my apartment before taking a short walk around downtown (again, beautiful blue skies!). Jane had to be at the airport around noon, so after B and I dropped her off, we went for another walk.

We hit up the local Metroparks and got in a four mile route that we’d done before – usually for running – and of course stopped for a few pictures. I even got a few “Happy Mother’s Day!” comments from strangers. Guess it’s obvious I’m due soon? (kidding)

I had to catch up on a little work, so we went to Blackbird Bakery, but sadly they were out of pastries (I guess that happens on Mother’s Day …) – I did enjoy a decaf cafe au lait while finishing up a few things from my to do list.

B also made me a delicious I’m-almost-a-Mother’s Day dinner. It was such a nice day out, I was craving something summery and the ht the spot. And so colorful!

Thinking Out Loud: What I’ll Miss About Being Pregnant

I’m just beyond 8 months pregnant. According to various sources, my baby is anywhere between the size of a pineapple, a jicama, a squash, a papaya or even a pineapple upside down cake.

According to some sources, I am having trouble sleeping, feeling mood swings, bloating, out of breath, heartburn, leg cramps and more pleasures. It’s beginning to be patio happy hour season and I’m still delegated to designated driver. And it’s finally getting nice enough to run outside, but I can barely make it a mile without having to stop and catch my breathe, hold my belly, etc.  So when a few weeks ago, while hanging out with some great new mom friends and one of them asked the others if they were missing being pregnant, it made me pause to think about it. Would I miss pregnancy?

I actually really can’t complain. I’m still enjoying being pregnant. I’m overall feeling pretty good. I’m still keeping up with running (somewhat) and can’t believe how close we are to meeting our baby! So, what are some things I will miss about being pregnant?

The kindness of strangers: Random people are so much nicer when they see a pregnant woman. People who never said hi to me before are stopping to say hi at the grocery store. Valet workers on the streets (who aren’t serving me), stop to ask me how I’m doing. While waiting to cross the street, random people smile and nod their head at me. I have no idea why, but there’s something about a pregnant person that makes people happy and kind!

The way I feel about my body: It may be hard to believe that with a giant belly and other random body changes that I feel really good about my body these days, but I do. No, I’m not looking in the mirror going “Damn girl, you look hot” on a daily basis, but I’m so impressed with my body these days that it’s empowering. Just knowing what it’s doing – growing and keeping another human being alive – is enough to make me feel proud.

New clothes: I’m lucky enough to have had 3 friends who gave birth within the past 6 months and a sister-in-law with 2 kids and therefore I have been given maternity clothes to borrow from ALL of them.This means that not only have I not had to buy more than a few maternity essentials, but also, I’ve been given a whole new temporary wardrobe. Are they all things I would buy/pick out for myself? Not at all – but that’s what makes it even more fun; I’m getting to try out new styles, looks and fashions and it’s fun!

The way friends/family cut you some slack: Don’t feel like staying out until all hours? Blame it on the pregnancy. More tired or irritable than usual? Blame it on the pregnancy. Need a late night ice cream treat? Blame it on the pregnancy. For the most part, my family and friends are being more lenient with me. I haven’t wanted to cook dinner more than once a week, and B understands. While writing this post, the dinner I’m eating is a combination of some carrots, peanut butter, pretzels and chocolate chips. Is this a regular occurrence? No … but at least B understands!

The kicks/movement: Before being pregnant I used to think that it was SO WEIRD to see or feel a pregnant woman’s belly move. It was like an alien and creeped me out. But now, I love it. I love feeling our baby move inside of me- even when it’s semi-uncomfortable. I don’t know how to explain it, but I have a strange love for this being I’ve never even met before, and feeling it move makes me only love it more.

Feeling like I can get away with odd behavior: Pregnancy brain may actually be a real thing. The other morning, before even going to work, I had nearly microwaved my wallet, washed/dried my lunch, and nearly brushed my teeth with B’s comb. It wasn’t pretty. Is it the lack of sleep? Maybe. The million things going on in my brain? Perhaps. But at least – for the most part – people have been understanding and excuse my stranger than typical behavior.

Don’t worry – I’m not going to blab all about being pregnant non-stop from now on. I’ve held off this long! I may have another post coming, however, about the things I WON’T miss about being pregnant, because face it – despite all of the above, there are some things that aren’t pretty!

What I Ate In Boston

Happy What I Ate Wednesday! The day for sharing a checking out a random day of eats (and spying on all of your food too…because I love seeing what everyone eats).

These are my delicious meals from B and my day in Boston. We spent a day there this weekend for our anniversary, and did a lot of walking know lot of great eating!

After a lot of walking around Newberry Street, a celebrity sighting, and the Isabella Gardner Museum, I was hungry. B had not planned lunch on our itinerary, but I managed to convince him to stop here. We split a lobster roll and chowdah.

I squeezed in the quick stop at David’s Tea on the way back. It was my first time there, and oh my goodness. I love tea, and this place did not disappoint. If it hadn’t been so crowded and slow service, I definitely would have ended up with some to bring home!

And then a romantic anniversary dinner in the north end. Mussels, pasta, and of course cannoli another treats for dessert.

For only having one day in one of my favorite cities, it was pretty perfect.

  • What is your favorite type of meal to eat out for a date night? I love so many different types, but do find Italian the most romantic!

Training Tuesday: The countdown until race weekend begins

Holy moly, where did the time go?! I can’t believe it’s MAY which means it’s almost Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon race weekend! 11 days left…

I didn’t have the best week when you look at the mileage but it was pretty good considering I was BUSY. I was out of town Tuesday and Wednesday for work, I had late meetings Monday and Thursday (not home until after 8) and then was traveling again Saturday for fun – B and I went to Boston for a quick day trip for our anniversary! So, while the miles weren’t there it wasn’t ALL bad.

The weather was great most of the week, too 🙂 I got in three outdoor runs BEFORE work!

Week of 4/24: 19.25 miles

Sunday: 4 miles: OUTSIDE @ 9:50ish pace

B and I got outside Sunday morning for a short run. I was determined to do 4 miles and really wanted sub/10 minute miles. So, on paper – yes! Check – we did it. BUT at like mile 1.25 I got a weird cramp/pain and we had to walk for a few minutes. I stopped the watch, mileage, timer, etc. at this point so it’s not showing up in the number – but I was still feeling somewhat off the rest of the run. I was struggling to keep up the pace and my heart rate was well into the 150s and almost 160 at one point (since pregnant I try to keep it in the 150s at max and on easy runs low 150s upper 140s). I may have been overdressed/overheating – I was really warm most of the time and have to keep this mind as the weather continues to get warm in the coming weeks up until race day.

Monday: 4.44 miles outside plus 1 mile walk

I finally got up the courage to run with one of my old running buddies, Erica. I hadn’t been very outgoing about running with her, because I’m much slower and get out of breath easily. But it wasn’t bad! I’m grateful she was wanting to run with me, and didn’t mind me slowing her down. Plus it made me get out of bed and outside!

Tuesday: elliptical and 1.55 mi walk

I was feeling a little off from Monday’s run, and decided to take it easy. 53ish minutes on the elliptical and a slow treadmill walk to get in some steps and movement before a work trip and a few hours in the car.

Wednesday: 4 miles and 30 min elliptical

I was traveling for work but still made it outside for a chilly run/walk despite a night of insomnia. Another hard run for me with lots of walking but this time I stopped the timer when walking so I’d know my actually pace and mileage for the run. I started to finally feel almost good as I got close to finishing- figures! Finished with some elliptical in the gym. And stretching.

Thursday: 2 miles run/walk on the treadmill and 50 minutes elliptical

I reaaaaallly did not want to get out of bed. After another not great night of sleep, I longed for more sleep. But I knew I’d be working until 8, and the thought of a 12 + hour day with no workout was more motivating to me than the thought of sleep, so I got up. 1 slow mile, then 1 walk run, then elliptical.

Friday: 4.7 – 4.2 miles run plus .5 walk

I was tired Friday and had no motivation the get in a run. But the night before, I had asked B if he’d run in the morning with me, and he had said he would. So, when the alarm went off and I saw there was a slight drizzle, I was hoping B would decide not to and I could just be lazy on the elliptical. No such case. He motivated me to get outside and we finished 4.2 miles. I did stop a few times- bathroom break and for photos, but it was the perfect way to kick off the weekend.

Saturday: 0 miles run but 29,000+ steps!

B had surprised me with a trip to Boston for our anniversary! We met one another in Boston so it’s a place with special meaning to us. Our flight out was early so we could spend the whole day there so we didn’t get in any runs ( I knew we wouldn’t) but as you can sleep see, we got in a LOT of walking! My feet were sore!

So many steps! (and yes, just a little sleep)

Three Weekends In One

What a weekend.  It was fun, tiring and a whirlwind of activity.  I need a weekend to recover I think!

If I had to sum up my weekend, I’d say it was like 3 weekends in one. I feel like I had enough going on to fill three weekends – and it was great!

The weekend started Friday night, with a dinner date and comedy show. B and had tickets to a 9:30 show (late for 8 month pregnant me) to see one of our favorite comica, Sebastian Maniscalco. We started off with a late dinner at Cowell & Hubbard, splitting cheese and a few appetizers.

And then the show. We’ve seen Sebastian several times throughout the years at Hilarities, but he has gotten bigger now (he was even on Seinfeld’s Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee) and even though he was playing at a different, bigger venue, we almost didn’t get tickets in time!

Saturday morning started early with a 5 am alarm- B and I were headed to the airport to fly to Boston for the day to celebrate our anniversary! It was a great, but quick trip and we were able to get in a lot of walking (nearly 30,000 steps) and see many of our old favorite places (we met in Boston in college). From Beacon Hill to the Boston Common to the Public Gardens to Newbury Street to Faneuil Hall to Fenway to the Isabella Gardner Museum, I’d say we hit nearly everything.

We even got in a celebrity sighting- we were told we couldn’t post photos on social media but I did share info to my Snapchat story (@koskim). Here’s a hint- he was promoting Walhburgers and his name rhymes with Bark 🙂

We ended the day with a great Italian meal in the North End, complete with cannoli, tiramisu and coffee of course.

Sunday started early again- we had to fly back to Cleveland first thing, as I was emceeing a board event Sunday at lunch time. I’m the Vice President of the Phi Beta Kappa Association of Cleveland, and Sunday was our annual scholarship banquet. I had the pleasure of speaking and announcing the names of all the student award recipients. Brought me back to my days of high school awards events!

We finally made it home Sunday evening and I am so grateful for B who could tell I was pooped and volunteered to make dinner. I was so worn out that even after 3 nights out, he could have convinced me to order pizza….shh don’t tell him I said that!

And that was my weekend. Not relaxing in the least, but fun.
