WIAW: Pizza Fridays

I love Fridays. For many reasons. Like many people, Fridays signify the end of the work week and the beginning of the weekend.  But also, it’s PIZZA AND BEER DAY in our household! Fridays typically mean B and I grab patio drinks or a drink somewhere and then B makes pizza (or we order it … I prefer when we make it) and I get to eat it. Pretty enjoyable. And that’s exactly what this post is – last Friday’s eats for this What I Ate Wednesday!

Breakfast was some homemade granola. I tried out a new recipe. It wasn’t as sweet as my typical batches but also not as clumpy. I really liked the way it turned out – I may be sharing it soon!20160518_213934

After breakfast, it was still early (and I was still on maternity leave), so B and I took FW out for a little morning walk.

20160923_090511

And then it was bath time. For FW. I know it’s not food- but it was still a big part of my day.

20160923_094644

Lunchtime came and I was starving. I was supposed to have lunch plans, but they fell through so I was super happy to have some food at home. Egg whites, spinach, sweet potato (with cinnamon and coconut oil) and avocado. 20160923_130841

For snack? An apple from when we went apple picking.

20160923_164554

And per usual – Friday beers! We found a patio with seats and I had my first pumpking – my favorite pumpkin beer!

20160923_190433

I mixed it with my other favorite pumpkin beer, Warlock. Pumpking and warlock together are SO GOOD!

img_20160923_203315

AND as usual – it was PIZZA night! I had a few slices (maybe more than the slices pictured below) of the pepperoni mushroom pizza we made.

homemadeza

And that sums up my day of eats. Now, can you see why I love Fridays?

  • What’s your favorite kind of pizza topping?
  • Do you like pumpkin beer? What’s your favorite fall beer?

Weekend with the Ladies

My best friends from college were in town this weekend. That’s right, Katie and Caitlin (from BC).

This is us from away back when in college.

caitkatie

And at my bachelorette party.

bach

We look the same today totally- right?

Anyway, they came in town for a mini reunion and of course to meet FW. Soooooo what did we do? How did we live it up – with a baby?

We took a long walk to the flats …

20160924_130040

Went for a run to the water …

20160925_095327

And also enjoyed a GNO (girls night out)! We went out to a French dinner at L’Albatros (ALL OF THE CHEESES) and then got amazing dessert at Coquette Patisserie.20160924_204401

Some of said dessert.

20160924_203236

We also enjoyed the Ohio City Street Fair.20160925_130317

Which of course included some Mitchell’s. I really enjoyed the pumpkin spice ice cream, ‘Tis the season!

20160925_143246

We also enjoyed some boy time with B and FW. We cheered on the Browns. And Indians. And they both lost 😦

20160925_115538

It was a pretty good weekend and I think FW enjoyed his first visitors. And we’re officially into Fall!

  • When was the last time you had a girls night?
  • How often do you see your college friends?

Per usual, I’m linking up with ErinKatie and the weekly wraps.

WIAW: Celebrating B’s Birthday

Does anyone else feel like last week went by waaaay too fast? Like, wasn’t I just writing a WIAW post? Anyway, this week’s What I Ate Wednesday features food from celebrating B’s birthday. We had a date night and FW’s aunt watched him so we could go out and celebrate!
Breakfast was some egg white oats and a peach and nectarine.  We were so so lucky to have some great peaches this year and these were fresh from the farmers market.

20160914_100239

Lunch was a salad. I had roasted some veggies and added them to some lettuce and other veggies (including avocado!)- it was delish!

20160914_133231

Snacks included an apple and almond butter and some additional spoonfuls of peanut butter (not pictured).

20160914_151111

Plus tons of hugs and kisses with this guy because this is my last week of maternity leave. I’m going to miss him so much!!

20160914_104948

When Mary came over, it was time for us to go out! We went to a new place near us for drinks and decided to stay for dinner. I had some Rosé and B had a delicious bourbon drink.

20160914_194410

We started off with some appetizers to share. This warm pita and Indian hummus were amazing.

20160914_195247

We also split some meats and octopus  on sticks (not the actual name or what they called them). 20160914_195315

And then for dinner we split the octopus tacos and the poke tuna “sandwich”.20160914_201526

Everything was delicious! We ended the meal stuffed and didn’t end up getting dessert or after dinner drinks.

And that sums up my day of eats from Wednesday. Now, some questions for you!

  • If you had to choose getting an appetizer or dessert, what would you get?
  • What’s your favorite nut butter?

Mini Vacation with the Baby

We’re back from a weekend away and the baby’s first hotel stay! B and I got in a quick weekend away with FW in Columbus and enjoyed some good food, drinks and even family time.

The weekend started off with pizza (yup,  every Friday) from Pies and Pints.  We didn’t get in until late, so we ended up not going out. Instead,  I picked up the pizza and grabbed a drink at the bar while B put FW to bed.  #winningmom

20160917_094701

Saturday we had a while day of exploring to do! We started with breakfast and a walk in the Short North.

20160917_103550

And then we spent the day on our feet walking – we walked to the Columbus Topiary Garden, downtown and German Village.

In front of the statehouse where his great grandfather worked

We also had to stop by North Market.

20160917_150807

And then we were back again to grab drinks at the Short North.

img_20160917_162911

Saturday night,  we enjoyed dinner at a cute (and baby friendly!) restaurant- Hubbard.

20160917_183119

I had amazing food.  We started off with fried Brussels sprouts and then I enjoyed a cauliflower sandwich with arugula quinoa salad. Jeni’s ice cream not pictured.

20160917_180732 img_20160917_194545

Sunday morning, we got up early and went for a stroller run around the city. We made it to a trail with a nice view of downtown.

20160918_090802 20160918_090438

Then, it was time for brunch! We ended our trip with brunch at B’s cousins’ house and FW got to meet his great aunt and cousins.

img_20160918_124706 20160918_114343

20160918_112812

B, FW and cousin Pete – the Wolfpack! (I swear FW is howling at the moon, not crying)

And of course, we ended Sunday with dinner with B’s parents. We celebrated B and two of his brothers’ birthdays with B’s favorite – steak, mashed potatoes and chocolate chocolate cake!

20160918_184429 20160918_192008

Questions:

  • What is your favorite birthday cake? Ice cream cake!! Love me some Ben & Jerry’s ice cream cake- Heath bar (I know it’s not called that anymore) or Peanut Butter fudge.
  • Have you ever been to Columbus, Ohio?

And because it’s Monday, I’m linking up with ErinKatie and the weekly wraps.

Ice Cream for Dinner after the Dentist

Happy Wednesday! We’ve made it halfway through the week, and this Wednesday is especially special because tonight B and I are going out to celebrate his birthday. His big day was yesterday (and of course we celebrated with a great dinner from Mod Meals and a cake I made), but tonight we’re having Aunt Mary babysit so that we can get dinner out, just the two of us. Our second date night since FW was born!

It’s also What I Ate Wednesday! This day’s eats aren’t the healthiest – but that’s what WIAW is about, sharing our eats, for what they are.

Breakfast was pretty good – I’m on an overnight oats kick again, mainly because I don’t have granola anymore, am trying to not eat a gallon of yogurt a day (I think FW doesn’t like that, so I’ll keep my dairy to ice cream) and they’re easy to eat with a baby around. This time I had some cinnamon and almond and peanut butter in my mixture of oats, chia seeds, honey and almond milk.20160908_090043

Midmorning, FW and I went to two farmers markets that are walkable from our apartment. We may have gotten a little overexcited and purchased a little too many peaches, nectarines, veggies and local bread.

img_20160908_125049

So  naturally, I snacked on a peach (it was SOOO GOOD) and nectarine that morning.20160908_114742

I also made some buckeyes that morning for a surprise for B’s birthday. So naturally I had one or two of those.

buckeyes homemade

For lunch, I had leftover grilled chicken (my parents had sent me home from NY with leftovers, yay!), half a baked sweet potato, sliced local tomato (SO much better than non-in-season tomato) and spinach.

20160908_124457

For dessert, I had a few spoonfuls of this deliciousness.

20160908_131345

AND of course, I had to try a slice of that cinnamon bread I had bought at the market. So good!

20160908_130455
B and I had dentist appointments that evening and after the dentist opted to stop by the local Dairy King for a quick treat to beat the heat. I had vanilla soft serve dipped in butterscotch. It was so good – but I was stuffed and not hungry for dinner after our 6 pm ice cream treat!
20160908_183144

So those were some of my eats from last week’s dentist appointment day to share for What I Ate Wednesday.

Some questions for you:

  • Do you have any traditions from going to dr or dentist appointment growing up? B’s family used to always go out for dinner or a treat after the dentist, which is one reason we went.
  • Have you been to any farmers markets recently? What did you get?

Baby’s First Apple Picking and Golf Outing

Another weekend is in the books and wow, it was a busy weekend. Once again, I need a weekend to relax and recover from the weekend – does that happen to you?

We started out our Friday night with what has become a tradition – a drink on a patio (this time for wine!) and homemade pizza.

20160909_192258

homemadeza

Saturday morning started early – we were going to meet Aunt Mary at 7:30 a.m. to help her with her marathon training run. We were only planning on running 3-5 with her and then walking with FW for the rest. Somehow, I managed to get in 6ish miles – the most I’ve done since FW was born!

20160910_093116

After our run we had plans to go apple picking with FW’s cousins and Dave and Anson and Celia. As usual, we picked way too many apples.20160910_131633 20160910_131846 20160910_131932 20160910_132151

FW prooooobably won’t remember his first apple picking excursion, but it was fun anyway. And hot – not our typical 50-60 degree fall weather — it was 80s!img_20160910_151054

Saturday night we were supposed to go out and meet up with B’s aunt, uncle and cousin who were in town. BUT FW decided to take a later than usual nap (5:30 to be exact) AND sleep until almost 11 p.m. SO, B went out while I stayed home, waiting for FW to wake up from his nap (which I guess turned out to be just a regular early early bedtime!).

Sunday morning, we slept in (until 8 a.m.! Big deal for baby…who also was up at 11, 4 and 530…) and then the three of us took a walk around downtown to enjoy the pleasantly cool morning. Compared to Saturday’s high of 91, 65 degrees felt great!

20160911_095349

While FW napped, I did some meal prep in the morning, and then it was off to meet up with B at the annual family golf outing! It was great to introduce FW to more of the whole family – who knows, maybe next year he’ll be golfing with dad! (probably not ;))

carneyopen

Questions:

  • Did it feel like summer near you still or has it gotten colder?
  • Do you golf? Nope! That’s why we met B there – I did not participate. .

And because it’s Monday, I’m linking up with ErinKatie and the weekly wraps.

WIAW: Enchilada Casserole

Cheers to Wednesday! I don’t know about you – but even with being on maternity leave, having Monday off makes the week fly by. How is already Wednesday? I’m not complaining – I’m pumped and ready to share today’s What I Ate Wednesday. This was last Wednesday’s eats!
The day started off with a trip to the West Side Market. I ended up buying a bunch of fruit while I was there, so breakfast was a lot of melon and watermelon, plus the last 2 Boobie Balls (aka energy balls for all you non-breastfeeding folks). 20160831_114126

20160831_120803

Lunch was a combo of a salad I had put together from leftovers (corn, beans, part of a turkey burger) plus some toppings from the Heinen’s salad bar, including tabbouleh, quinoa and tortellini!

20160831_133940 20160831_151932

Afternoon snacks included some bread and sweet potato with a variety of nut butter (I had almond butter and two varieties of peanut butter) and some more fruit salad.

20160831_153328

Fresh fruit from the market. Yup, that’s a pacifier in the background.

20160831_160026

B’s sister was downtown after work and invited us out for beers. I had a nice saison- but I was pretty tempted to get a pumpkin beer!

20160831_184627

Dinner was SO good. FW had taken two solid naps during the day, so I was able to do meal prep and prepare Enchilada Pie from Skinny Taste. I had gotten most of the veggies from the West Side Market that morning and all day was looking forward to this enchilada-type casserole.

Speaking of enchilada casseroles, when i mentioned the dinner to B, he reminded me of the bit from one of his favorite comics, Felipe Esparza  (from the Whats Up Fool podcast).  I couldn’t fins the actual bit we saw him perform online but if you watch this you get the idea:

20160831_202941

The pie was so goos and easy. And we had leftovera for lunch plus another dinner now in the freezer!

And that was it. There we go – another What I Ate Wednesday
Some questions for you:

  • Have you had any pumpkin beers or other pumpkin themes treats yet?
  • Do you have a favorite podcast?

FW’s First Trip To NY

This weekend,  B and I took FW on his first road trip- we went to visit my parents, brother,  extended family and friends in NY.

It was the baby’s first road trip!

20160905_122301
First,  I’ll admit that a normally 8 hour car ride is not my idea of fun. Add in a semi cranky 2-month-old baby? Not the greatest way to spend your Friday night. But once we got into town,  it was great! I loved being able to introduce everyone to the baby and also get some time to myself as he was passed around.

semi-cranky baby hehe

Some weekend highlights included:

Playing “pass the baby.” Not really- but FW got passed around from my mom, to my aunt to my uncles, etc.

Going for a run around my old neighborhood while FW was watched by my parents. It’s a nice change of scenery from my usual downtown runs and much hillier than I’m used to!

Seeing my brother.  I hadn’t seen him in a few months and I was so glad that he and FW got to meet! This picture makes me so so so happy.

Hanging out with Jane and Alisa,  two of my bffs from forever.  They were also excited to meet FW.

20160903_165338

And we snuck in some FaceTime with our bff Melgar of course.

20160903_193017

Taking FW on a run at a local park. B and I took turns with the jogging stroller, which is getting a little easier to use.

post-run pic at the park

Getting through our first road trip with FW. I was lucky to get some advice from some mom friends ahead of time (including Reanna) and it went pretty smoothly. I spent about half the time in the front of the car, half in the back and brought a few toys, some pumped bottles and a car adapter for my pump.

Watching the first BC game of the season. FW hung out with B and cheered on the Eagles, who sadly lost their lead at the end of the 4th Quarter.

20160903_075922

We had to leave early Monday but still managed to make it home for our usual “Sunday” dinner – where FW continued to get showered with attention,  this time by his cousins.

20160905_182802

My heart is so full from showing FW my home and introducing him to so many of the most important people in my life. I know he won’t remember these days later in life, but I’m cherishing every one of these moments as he gets bigger and bigger each day!

Friday Five: Ask A Mom (Part Three)

Happy Friday!! I cannot WAIT until the weekend. We have some fun stuff planned for Labor Day with the baby, including seeing my family! So wish us good luck with our first LONG carride with FW!

Today’s the last part in my interview with Reanna from The Last Mommy Blog (friend IRL). Don’t forget to read parts one and two – each week we’ve shared 5 questions and her answers. My answers for this week are found here.

This week’s 5 questions focus on confessions and reflections on being a mom.

reannamomblog2

1. Confess without shame: What’s one thing you’ve screwed up as a mom so far?

There are so many things I wish I were better at, but I think that’s just the ubiquitous cloud of mom-guilt that follows every mom home from the hospital. The one thing I really am trying to be better about is not staring at my phone all the time. It’s been a really bad habit, and I keep having to remind myself I don’t want my baby’s memories of me to be looking down at a screen instead of at him.

2. What was the best advice you’ve gotten about motherhood?

I don’t remember where I first read it, and it’s so simple and not profound, but “Give it two weeks.” Whatever phase or struggle you’re going through that seems insurmountable and makes you feel defeated will feel like ancient history in no time. You’ll be on to the next challenge, and stronger for it.

3. What is something your husband is really good at, dad-wise?

He has really hit his stride as The Baby has gotten mobile and more playful. He’s great at getting The Baby laughing. He’s always been up for the baby care stuff, but I think has felt like second fiddle since I’ve been the primary food source since day one.

18651

4. Has motherhood changed your perspective on the world in any way?

I feel so hard for all mothers and babies now. I have always thought our maternity leave policies (or lack thereof) in this country were unfair, but now I feel they’re downright cruel. I took The Baby to a restaurant when he was a few months old and our waitress told me she had a two-week old at home and I wanted to stuff piles of money in both her hands, scoop her up, drive her home and tuck her and her baby into bed. It is appalling to me that we are failing families in this way.

5. Have you read any parenting books? Any recommendations? Any discussion about how they make you feel like drinking because you’re clearly failing?

I am, by habit, drawn to parenting books because I like learning about child development research. However, having read through a couple, I  now measure each parenting book by how many glasses of wine I think I would need to get through them because they all make me feel like a massive, child-ruining failure. Use a bouncer? Your baby will never walk and will probably get scoliosis! Co-sleep? Your baby is guaranteed to die of SIDS. Let your baby cry it out? Enjoy your robot-sociopath! I think I’ve finally read enough to get beyond the point of feeling like I’m doing literally everything wrong and landed squarely at the point of feeling like no one knows my baby better than me, and I’ll work it out.

BONUS: For (potential) future kids, what would you do differently? With pregnancy, childbirth, motherhood, etc.

The second time around, I’ll definitely feel less smug about breastfeeding.

Even though we’re trying to transition away from it, if I have another baby who is extremely needy when it comes to sleeping near me, I’m not going to feel guilty about co-sleeping. I spent the first several months of co-sleeping feeling like A) I was failing/being weak, B) Everyone was judging me and C) I was putting my baby in danger. But the more I’ve read and learned and experienced, the more content I am with our decision. It’s what The Baby needed, I’ve gotten twice as much sleep as I would have without it, and nobody really cares what you’re doing (except Internet trolls, and they can shove off).

As far as childbirth goes, as you know I lucked out with mine. I hope my next one is just as quick (though preferably not on a major holiday). I probably would practice more with The Husband on relaxation and pain relief techniques that worked for me the first time in case a doula isn’t in our budget again.

And that’s it from Reanna. Don’t be sad – you can always read her blog and get more of her wisdom there (and while you’re there, learn about the importance of mom friends). Or become friends with us in real life and get an invite to Ladies Craft Beer Society (you don’t need to be a mom to be invited)!
