Influenza Recovery Runs

I was hoping by this time to be writing a post about how my Cleveland half marathon challenge training is going. I’m in week four of training, so I should’ve done a few days days, a speed day and a long run. Did this week include any of that? Not really.

Here’s a look at this week’s runs:

Sunday: 5.68 miles

Monday: 4.63 miles

Tuesday: 3 miles

Wednesday-Friday: off

Saturday: 4.51 miles

Some highlights-

Sunday was my first day out for a run in a week. I had the flu the week prior, which kept me stuck in bed with a fever for several days. And after the flu, I had a cough. Well, it didn’t get much better. Sunday’s run, while it was nice to be outside, hurt. There was lots of stopping and coughing. The only good thing? I was able to get up a lot of phlegm (TMI?).

Monday, I figured I’d try again. I was having coughing spells and pain in my chest while trying to run. So, some miles were walking and some were jogging. I made it 4.64 miles.

Tuesday’s run didn’t happen. I ended up mostly walking, due to nonstop coughing and pressure in my chest when trying to move too quickly. It turned into a mostly 3 mile walk.

The rest of the week, I took it easy. Slept in (waking up at 6:30 vs. 4:45 was amazing!) and tried to recover.

Finally, Saturday, I went out again. I did 4.51 miles outdoors with only a little coughing! Does this mean I’m healed? Not yet. And am I so far behind in my training? Yup. But I’m glad I was out there again!

 Some questions for you:

  • Have you had the flu? How long did it take you to recover? And get back running?
  • How long do you take off after being sick?

I’m linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down.

  1. I hope you’re feeling much better by now. Here’s hoping that your runs just keep getting stronger. I had the flu (type A) two weeks ago and I’m still coughing. Mine is a dry cough and I feel like I need to clear my lungs, but can’t.

  2. I’m sorry that your runs were so hard this week 😦 I’ve had a few friends that have had the flu this year and they have mentioned that it has taken them a little longer than usual to get back to running. I hope that this week is better for you.

  3. Hope you are feeling much better by now. It sure does take a while to get back to full speed after being sick. Have a good week ahead and thanks for linking up

  4. Knock wood, I don’t think I’ve ever had the flu, and I’m quite alright with that. UGH…hope you’re back to 100 % soon!

  5. Ugh on being sick, but glad you are feeling a bit better. All that coughing sounds like coronaviru symptoms but so does the “regular” flu, which is still way more common. Be well!

  6. So do you think it was coronavirus at all? I just wonder how many cases go unreported because it just isn’t necessary to seek medical help. I’m glad you were still able to keep moving around. That’s so tough when you’re sick like that! And hopefully everyone else in the house are feeling OK too!
