Weekend Update – Birthdays and Baseball Games

The first day of summer is officially here! And while most of Cleveland was celebrating at the annual CMA Solstice Party, once again I neglected to get tickets in time and instead celebrated the summer in other ways – two baseball games, birthday drinks and a run (not in that order) with Nicole, and a bbq with B’s family to celebrate Father’s Day.

Friday morning started early – it was Nicole’s birthday and she wanted to get in a birthday run. Now that I’m in my 3rd week of training for the Cleveland Rock N Roll Half Marathon, I knew I wanted to get in a 7-ish mile run this weekend, so it was perfect – I met her early for a longer run before work. No sweaty selfies this time 🙂

Friday after work, it was time to celebrate Nicole’s birthday. We met up for drinks at the Corner bar, the new bar at Progressive Field and had plans to watch the game with her friends.

The game ended with fireworks and then we hit up the rooftop bar at Greenhouse Tavern for after-game drinks.

Saturday morning started with some treadmill miles before B and I hit up the West Side Market for our regular groceries.

We made a pit stop for ice cream after the groceries. Mason’s Creamery is the best – I had half salted caramel and half lychee.

That night, B and I had more tickets to the Indians game – I was sitting in the #TribeLive section this time. It was also t-shirt giveaway night – wonder if my dad would like this shirt? (just a little big for me)

Sitting in the #TribeLive section we got great views and also our own private section. And a free viewing of fireworks from the dugout!

Sunday morning I attempted to be productive. After an easy workout, we headed to Heinen’s for some groceries and lunch, followed by some laundry and meal prep. We also made it to Rising Star for some coffee and Hingetown for their Sunday Market.

We finished off the evening with B’s family for a Father’s Day meal.

It’s weekends like these that are hard to be away from my family – I would love to spend Father’s Day with him – but I’m so grateful to have B’s family to lean on. AND – my dad is coming by next week so we can celebrate then.

I can’t wait to see my parents in less than a week!

Some questions for you:

  • Did you spend Father’s Day with any family?
  • Who is your favorite baseball team?

Celebrating Dad in the CLE

It was a beautiful weekend in Cleveland. Sunny skies (most of the time), warm but not too warm weather, AND my dad even came to visit – that’s right my dad (and mom) drove 16 hours to see me for Father’s Day weekend!

Some of the weekend’s highlights:

We started with a sushi dinner.

Followed by some delicious dessert (my dad and I shared that ice cream) at The Chocolate Bar.

Saturday we took a walk and checked out the new Cleveland Convention Center.

My dad got to try out the Indian’s pitching booth. He hasn’t lost his touch – he got three strikes! (Check out the video here:https://vine.co/v/hBm6Ql5OdBn)

Then we went to the Rolling Stones exhibit at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

And after an early dinner of burgers and beer (my dad’s request), saw the Indians game.

They may have lost, but we caught “one of the best fireworks shows” according to my mom.

And then Sunday morning before they got back on the road, FaceTimed with my brother. Then I got in a great workout and enjoyed some Chipotle for lunch.

And then I cooked B (NOT a dad, just to clarify) some oven fried chicken, mashed white beans and collard greens (from our CSA).

Happy Father’s Day!

Earlier this week, I came across the article, Rules for Dads Raising Daughters,  and found myself getting teary-eyed when I went through the list and thought of my dad. It’s a long list and as B said “filled with all sorts of good stuff that you should already know and/or that should be common sense,” but I couldn’t help but think of how my dad raised me. In honor of Father’s Day, I’m sharing some of the tips for fathers with you and thanking my dad for meeting this criteria, set up by the Good Men’s Project:

Let her play in the mud.

Okay, maybe I played in the sand more than in the mud, but my dad always let me get dirty and play however I wanted. Yes, I played with Barbies and My Little Pony, but I also played softball – with my dad as my coach. I had no idea at the time how time-consuming and emotionally draining a job that could be – but I know now that coaching a girls’ softball team is no easy feat.

Remember that the way you talk about and treat women will have a lasting impact.

For as long as I can remember, my Dad has called my mother names of affection, held her hand in public, and acted in small romantic ways – even today, after 30 years of marriage. I’ve never heard him use the word b**** or other derogatory terms toward women. My mom definitely chose a keeper.

Cry when the family pet dies.

Thank goodness I’ve never had to face a pet dying but if I did, I know my Dad would cry. I’ve seen my Dad cry or tear up countless times – he has never once felt like he had to hold in his emotion to “be a man.” In fact, it became somewhat of a joke in the family that I had to stop making him handmade cards in elementary school because it seemed that no matter what card I made him, he would tear up!

Read her books with great heroes — both boy and girl heroes.

This is another area my dad excelled in – reading books to me. I think most parents stop reading to their kids before bed after they get old enough to read to themselves – or at least somewhere in elementary school. Not my dad. I’m not talking about Dr. Seuss – sure we read those – but we made our way up to books like Nancy Drew, To Kill a Mockingbird, Lord of the Rings and Fahrenheit 451.I think he read to me until I was in late junior high school and eventually had to stop because I was spending the nighttime doing homework and talking to boys on the phone.

Share music with each other.

My dad (and mom) have always shared their favorite music with me – and vise versa. Family car trips included tapes and then CDs and singing along to whatever my parents were listening – from Allman Brothers (I was named after Melissa) to The Who to the Beatles to Jackson Brown to Billy Joel.  My dad even attended my first concert (well, he chaperoned) and put up with Third Eye Blind and Eve 6 – from the back of the room of course – without complaining.

I was supposed to be spending Father’s Day with my dad this year  – but due to work schedules and travel time (the drive from NY to Cleveland is never easy) I’ll have to wait another week. Until then – thank you Dad for all you’ve done!
