Tunes Thursday: My Latest Running Mix

I’m running a half marathon this weekend. B and I signed up a few weeks ago, and I’m so excited! After last year’s marathon-training-gone-wrong, I have been weary of running long distances. We have done a handful of 5ks and other short runs since my tibia and metatarsal have healed – but a long run? Like double digit? Not until last month. And it has been fine! So, I was eager to get a race on our schedule and this weekend’s race fits in perfectly with our training runs – AND B’s sister is running it too!

So in honor of this week’s race, I’m sharing a super belated Running Mix. Some of these songs are old by now, but I’ve slowly been adding them to my playlist and as the runs grow longer, so does the list. They’re a mix of upbeat happy songs that make me want to move. As always, these songs are on my What I’m Listening to Spotify playlist (among other songs).

Rockstar – A Great Big World (one of my new fave bands)

Wings – Macklemore and Ryan Lewis (Really, I just love Macklemore. Otherside and Same Love are also AMAZING)

The House That Heaven Built – Japandroids

Only Wanna Dance With You – Ke$ha

I Love It – Icona Pop (the lyrics sometimes just pump me up and remind me to ENJOY my runs)

This is The New Year – A Great Big World

Round and Round – Imagine Dragons (this one is good for a lonnnnng hill)

Some thoughts to ponder:

What’s on your Running Mix?

Do you have any races coming up?

What do you consider a “long run” vs. “short run”?

Wordless Wednesday: Christmas Music

I’m officially on winter vacation! Despite a few loose ends from work I’m tying up, I’m back home in New York trying to work as little as possible, spend as much time with family and friends, and get into the holiday spirit. To help get in the mood for Christmas (while it’s 40 degrees out), I’m sharing some of my favorite holiday tunes for today’s (semi)Wordless Wednesday post. Warning – these may not be the traditional tunes you listen to year in and out. A playlist with a few of these songs, and some more, can be found here.

All I Want for Christmas Is You (Love Actually version … my favorite!)

One of my favorites from The Nutcracker – Pas De Deux

Michael Buble – Baby Please Come Home

Last Christmas (The Glee version … only version worth listening to in my opinion)

Straight No Chaser – 12 Days of Christmas

Blues Traveler – Christmas

Transiberian Orchestra – Christmas Eve in Sarajevo (Carol of the Bells) (one of B’s favorite Christmas songs)

March of the Wooden Soldiers (from one of my dad’s favorite Christmas movies, Babes in Toyland)

Baby It’s Cold Outside (Colbie Caillat and Gavin DeGraw)

It Feels Like Christmas (from the Muppet Christmas Carol)

The Chieftains – Il Est Ne (we would listen to this album each year when putting up our tree…  I swear hearing this song makes me smell pine needles!)

Weezer – We Wish You a Merry Christmas

EPMBBKMVRRZB

Tunes Thursday: Pre-Vacay Edition

That’s right – I’m leaving for vacation (AGAIN) in less than a week. While work is pretty crazy right now, I’m finally getting excited for my trip! So this week’s Tunes Thursday (sorry I couldn’t get my act together in time to make this a Tunes Tuesday post) is full of some of my favorite light, fun summertime songs that keep me working, bopping my head at my desk and getting excited for my next trip. As always, listen to the playlist, here.

Rita Ora – How We Do

Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen – Good Time

Cher Lloyd – Want You Back

MGK – End of the Road

Okay, this song is neither new nor light-hearted … but it’s been on my playlist this week anyway.

Grouplove – Tongue Tied

The video is wild.

Nicki and Bieber – Beauty and a Beat

Across The Universe – With A Little Help From My Friends

Last, but not least, an oldie – but something I’ve been listening to again this week. Enjoy!

Tunes Tuesday – FUN Edition

This Thursday, I’m excited to be going to see one of my favorite bands, Fun., at the House of Blues Cleveland! It sold out right away but I was able to snag tickets for me, a coworker, Cari, her boyfriend, and my former coworker Ali.  In honor of the awesome band and their amazing music, this week’s Tunes Tuesday will feature some of my favorite Fun. and old Format songs. Enjoy! And for some more Fun. and Format songs, here’s my Spotify playlist.

Walking the Dog

This was the first Fun. song I listened to – my brother introduced it to me a few years ago!

All the Pretty Girls

Some Nights

This is the official video, but the sound doesn’t start until like a minute or so in. It’s my favorite song off their new CD. I get chills every time it starts!

It Gets Better

Can’t find the official video on YouTube, but this live version makes me SO excited to see them!

Carry On

Another acoustic that is just unbelievable. In my opinion.

Believe In Me

Light a Roman Candle With Me

She Doesn’t Get It – The Format

The First Single – The Format

Tunes Thursday – Marathon Edition

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that I’ve been training for a marathon for these past 5 months. Race day is Sunday, and despite a few pending injuries (UPDATE – I have an XRay appt tomorrow, so PLEASE keep your fingers crossed that I’m cleared to run!) I’m hoping, wishing, etc. to run! In honor of the race, here is a sampling of the songs I’ve been listening to this week, plus some ones that I like to run to. Hoping that this mix will bring me some good luck with my appointment tomorrow and that everything will be perfect on Sunday. Oh yeah – and I made this into a Spotify playlist* for you. You’re welcome.

Welcome to the Black Parade – My Chemical Romance

I love running to this. When the beat picks up, I can’t help but quicken my stride.

All These Things That I’ve Done – The Killers

This song was in a commercial for the Olympics a few years ago, and since then I can’t help but associate it with running.

What Makes You Beautiful – Glee Edition

A new edition to my list of workout songs, this one just makes me smile. Even if I’m in pain!

The Future Freaks Me Out – Motion City Soundtrack

This was my “Happy Song” in college.

Surf Wax America – Weezer

Flavor of the Week – American Hi-Fi

Don’t Stop Me Now – Queen

A guest pick from B: John Williams Olympic Song

A guest pick from my brother: Thieves in the Night – Hot Chip

Spotify playlist is approximately 37 minutes long, so you could potentially run a warm up AND a 5k while listening to this!

TUNES-day Tuesday

Instead of Wordless Wednesday, what about a Tunes-day Tuesday for this week?

Here’s a sampling of some of the songs I’ve been listening to this week. It’s pretty pop-y for some reason. Enjoy!

Karmin! Love this group, and enjoy a lot of their covers. Here’s a new-ish one:

My favorite new FUN song right now: (yes, I have concert tickets for when they come in June!)

Neon Trees. Such a good song, despite being in a commercial 🙂

The Wanted. The video is cheesy so I beg you not to watch  more than the first five seconds… instead enjoy the sound.

And just because – Young Homie:

Tunes Thursday

I was inspired by Alexa’s post last week, featuring some of her favorite tunes and decided to do a TUNES-day Tuesday this week … but forgot to actually do it on Tuesday! Woops! So here it is on Thursday, instead. Here are a few of the songs I’ve been listening to this week – enjoy!

To get me pumped up for St. Patrick’s Day, a little Dropkick Murphys:

Something from my new favorite CD, Fun: (yes, I have concert tickets for when they come in June!)

Nicki Minaj, Starships: (sorry, don’t think the official video is out yet)

Some Mumford & Sons … not new, but in my head this week:

Another St. Patrick’s Day Inspired Pick, Flogging Molly:

AND for all those dying for The Hunger Games movie to come out, Taylor Swift:

Next To Normal – Anything But Your Normal Musical

Wednesday night B & I saw Next To Normal at Playhouse Square. It was the last night of the inaugural Review Crew’s duties. It was a bittersweet feeling – I felt proud to know that the first season was through, but sad that our time as Playhouse Square insiders was over. And that’s exactly the feeling the end of the musical – bittersweet.

The show was incredible. The set was really unique – it was stationary, hardly ever moving or changing, yet providing the backdrop for every scene in the play, from a kitchen to a doctor’s office to a high school dance. The orchestra was incredible – not only was the rock music refreshing and catchy (even when the lyrics were depressing, I found myself bopping my head and tapping my toes, it was that entertaining), but the members of the ensemble were all scattered throughout the set.

Without beating around the bush – the lead actress, Alice Ripley, did not live up to the hype. I really really really wanted to like her – she’s from Cleveland (went to Kent State), is a member of the original cast and even won a Tony award for this very performance when the play first came out. Her singing was just uncomfortable. Maybe she had a cold? Whatever it was, it sounded like every song was forced and that she was holding her true voice in.

That being said, the other actors were incredible. The story itself was amazing. The play was well-written, the actors were great and the plot intriguing. For those of you that don’t know what it’s about – read this first, and then decide if you want to see it. In plain words – and without giving away the surprise that I didn’t see coming – it’s a depressing, not-uplifting storyline. It’s about mental illness and all the ways a family is affected by it. It’s about losing loved ones and letting go. It’s not a happy, upbeat musical. When the curtain lifts at the end, you’re left with a haunting feeling, and want to ask yourself, “well, where do we go from here?” But that, in itself, and the fact that I’m still thinking about the play and how it made me feel – is the very reason the musical is worth seeing.

If you’re looking for a feel good, average musical, Next To Normal is not for you. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t see it – quite the contrary, as it was amazing. It’s a show that gives you an insider’s look into the lives of a seemingly normal family, that’s falling apart. It’s a show that makes you think about yourself and examine the life you’re living. It’s a show that stays with you.

The show is in town through the 19th. Buy tickets today here.

Plus – here’s my new favorite song … such great music!

Weekend Fun: The Lakewood Project / Hard Day’s Night

We interrupt your regularly scheduled blog post (and the theme of social media for New Year’s Resolutions) for a quick entry on some fun stuff going on in my life. As you probably now, I often blog about fun things to do in the CLE but in the winter I have a hard time getting off my couch and out into the cold. This summer I vowed not to sit inside and hibernate all winter long, and instead promised to find fun things to do.

This weekend B took me to a performance by the Lakewood Project – a local high school orchestra that uses electric string instruments, drums, and other instruments to play everything BUT traditional classical music. The show started with a warning from the director, “This is not your normal concert – we have no rules. We encourage dancing, clapping and anything else that lets you enjoy the music,” which pretty much summed up the entire performance. The group rocked through the first part of the show and was paired with the Beatles cover band, Hard Day’s Night, which started off the second act and then joined the high schoolers for the remainder of the show.

It was an awesome performance. I found myself smiling at the high schoolers, at the fun they (and their friends in the audience) were clearly having, and at their performances. I played violin back in the day and would have LOVED to be part of an ensemble like this in high school! An avid Beatles fan (Across the Universe is one of my favorite movies), I also loved the show Hard Day’s Night put on, including the acts they performed with Lakewood Project. I’ll definitely be checking out the schedule for both the Lakewood Project and Hard Day’s Night and putting their upcoming shows on my calendar!

Some videos of the performance follow – includes some short clips of The Lakewood Project by themselves, and the group with Hard Day’s Night.

Baba O’Reilly Clip: (check out the high schoolers dancing in the front of the stage — I don’t remember the last time I was at a high school orchestra concert and the fellow high schoolers were so excited to be there!)

Fridays@7: The Cleveland Orchestra’s New Concert Format

One of the things I love about living in Cleveland is the great access to culture and arts. When I visit B at Case (he’s in the law school), I’m within walking distance from the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Museum of Natural History and the Cleveland Orchestra. I don’t take advantage of these opportunities nearly enough. This weekend, however, I was able to get dress-circle tickets (from B’s sister-in-law who works for the orchestra) to the Cleveland Orchestra’s first performance as part of its new Fridays@7 concert series.

What’s so cool about Fridays@7?

  • Earlier start time, shorter program: Concert starts at 7 p.m. (just as the title suggests) and is only about 1.25 hrs long – meaning your whole night isn’t taken up by the concert if you don’t want it to be.
  • No intermission: The 75 minute program does not include an intermission – meaning the music is played straight through and again, it ends earlier.
  • Less formal: The musicians trade their formal wear in favor of more casual “urban black.” Attendees are told to feel free to leave their ties at home!
  • Post-concert concert: If you want to stay at Severance Hall even after the program, there’s post-concert music to enjoy in the grand foyer.
  • Food and drinks: During the post-concert entertainment, food and drinks are available. Though I, myself, didn’t get anything, I saw people eating some sandwiches and noticed a cash bar.

beatthedonkeyI think this format is a great concept – and could appeal to a much younger, Gen X and Gen Y audience who want to enjoy the orchestra but still have a free Friday night. Our sold out show was a night of Beethoven (the Piano Concerto No. 4 and Symphony No. 5) and was AWESOME. The pianist for the concerto, Mitsuko Uchida, was amazing and received a long standing ovation. After the concert, we stuck around to hear a few songs from the post-concert entertainment, Cyro Baptista’s Beat the Donkey – which was quite a contrast to the Beethoven we’d been hearing moments earlier. Beat the Donkey can only be described as new world music with crazy innovative percussionists. If you’ve seen Rachel Getting Married – think of the rehearsal dinner scene – that’s Cyro Baptista himself.

I definitely recommend you check out Fridays@7 – the next concerts include:

  • November 20: Cello and Space with Alisa Weilerstein and guest conductor Jonathan Nott
  • January 8, 2010: Tragedy to Triumph, with guest conductor Jaap van Zweden leading Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4
  • February 19, 2010: Musical Obsession, with Music Director Franz Welser-Möst conducting orchestral excerpts of music by Richard Wagner
  • April 30, 2010: Royal Drums & Trumpets, with baroque specialist Bernard Labadie guest-conducting Handel’s Water Music
