Playhouse Square’s 2017-2018 Broadway Season!

It’s one of my FAVORITE times of year … the time of year when  Playhouse Square announces its next Broadway season! Earlier this week, I was privileged to get a sneak peek at what’s coming to Cleveland at their Broadway Series Launch Party.

20170228_210511This year, I went with Cuoghi and not only did it made for a fun girls night and of course it was great to start to plan which shows I NEED to see!

Oh yeah, and not only did they announce what shows are coming – BUT SARA BAREILLES WAS THERE.  (that’s her below on the left chair)

img_20170228_200359_208

And not only was Sara Bareilles there (she’s performing as the lead on Broadway starting at the end of March for 6 weeks!), but SHE PERFORMED A SONG FROM THE MUSICAL.

I know, caps overload, but B and I both LOVE Sara and I really liked the movie Waitress back in the day and the song she sang gave me goosebumps.

Besides Waitress, here’s what is coming into town:

What shows am I most excited about? In no order:

  • RENT! I love RENT. I saw it many years ago when I was in college and then again when it came to Cleveland a few years ago. I’m so excited it’s back!!!!
  • Hamilton! I mean come on – who isn’t excited about Hamilton? It’s in Cleveland for SIX weeks so I hope I can get tickets!
  • Waitress! Not only did the song that Sara Bareilles sing haunt me (I’m still listening to it!) but who wouldn’t want to see her songs performed live?

Some questions for you:

  • Have you seen any of these shows? Any recommendations?
  • What’s the last (or next!) musical you’ve seen?

Disclosure: I was given two complimentary tickets to Playhouse Square’s Broadway launch party. All views on this post are my own. Interested in seeing any of these shows? The only way to guarantee your seats right now is to get season tickets.

What We’ve Been Up To

Welp, it’s been more than a week since I last wrote – yikes! The main reason – craziness at work, business of the season AND the stomach flu. Yes, the stomach flu. (this is a BIG DEAL. The last time I had any stomach issues – including pregnancy – was January 2010!! B even remembered)

no-sick-days-for-moms

B and I both got sick last weekend and I was definitely on the mend all this week. I luckily didn’t have to miss any work and powered through the week, but man, I’m tired! So here are a few things we’ve been up to the past few weeks or so:

A little bit of running. I’ve been getting my mileage up to 20+ a week (minus this week when I was still recovering and took 3 days off) and it feels good! And last week I got in my longest post-baby run 6.5 miles!

20161201_062607

A lot of momming. (Side note – my computer wants to correct that to Miming Lolz) Seriously. Being a mom is no joke especially when you’re sick. And your husband is sick. And your baby – who thank goodness didn’t get the said flu but got a cold instead – is starting to roll all around! So it was really cool when I got this package in the mail from Sway and Walgreens – a Well Beginnings Diaper Kit! You know you’re a mom when you are excited for surprises like these. (And yes, so far these diapers live up to the hype)

img_20161206_182645

Baking. Yes, I went to my annual holiday cookie baking event and it was great. If I get my act together I’ll share the recipe for the spice cookies I made. B really likes them.20161203_151701

Celebrating the season! We’ve already had several holiday events and I know they’re going to keep on coming. And that’s okay – I love this time of year! Check out the gorgeous lights in my hood. img_20161128_181108

And yes, any chance I get to dress FW in a holiday-ish outfit, we’re doing it. He doesn’t seem to mind.20161201_072329 img_20161203_110614

And of course, we had our annual Love Actually night – complete with wine and cheese. Because it’s our annual tradition that I love!

20161203_200315

And that’s about it – what about you?

Some questions:

  • Do you like Love Actually? I still find it crazy when I find someone who doesn’t!! (ahem coworker who shall remain unnamed)
  • Do you have any holiday traditions?
  • When was the last time you were sick?

Announcing Playhouse Square’s 2016-17 Broadway Season!

Hooray! The time is here to announce NEXT year’s Broadway Season in Cleveland!

As you know, one of the things I love about living in Cleveland is the great access I have to the Arts – we have a great variety of museums (including FREE ones), a world class orchestra and amazing theaters and performances that I’m lucky enough to attend and are right outside my apartment. I know I’ve shared this before, but Playhouse Square is the country’s largest performing arts center outside of New York City – and it’s just a walk away from where I live!  This year, once again, I was lucky enough to be invited to the 2016-2017 Broadway Series Launch Party. I got to go with Mary for a mini girls night out.

20160322_220015

The event was GREAT. We were given early access to a preview of all the shows coming to the theater this coming season AND the post-show media party. Here is a sneak peek of what’s to come!

This year’s event was so much fun, with surprise visits along the way!

Such a cool event!

It’s hard to say which shows I’m most excited about. BUT If I had to pick THERE shows, which would I pick to see? (this is always a hard question for me…but here’s what I think and some of the music/background info]

  • Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time
  • Something Rotten!
  • Finding Neverland

A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, but I am so lucky to be in a great city with access to such a wonderful, thriving, cultural scene.

I happen to live, play and work downtown Cleveland, home of Playhouse Square, which is the largest performing arts center in the country outside of New York. And one of the perks of living here is that sometimes I get to see GREAT Broadway shows.

This week, I was invited by Playhouse Square to see The Tony Award winner for Best Musical, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder. I got two complimentary tickets, so B and I enjoyed a night out.

Have you heard of the show? Here’s the plot in a nutshell:

Some highlights from the show:

The show was a blast. It was funny, had catchy music and was fast paced. Come on – when was the last time you saw a musical about a serial killer? Okay, I guess Sweeney Todd counts, and I do love me some Sweeney Todd – but this musical was less gory, less gruesome and the killer was more lovable.

Even B enjoyed it. We both laughed at the funny parts and clapped (and may have even cheered) at so many other parts as well. The cast was great – so many of the characters were unique and there’s even one guy who plays SEVERAL roles.

I don’t want to give too much away – so go see it yourself! A Gentleman’s Guide is in town until November 15, 2015. In Cleveland? Be sure to go to PlayhouseSquare.com to get tickets before the show’s gone.

Disclaimer: I was given two tickets to see A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder, as well as invited to attend the pre-show reception by Playhouse Square. All views, as always, are my own.

Some questions for you:

  • What was the last musical you’ve seen?
  • Have you seen a Gentleman’s Guide?
  • What’s your favorite Broadway show?

Playhouse Square’s 2015-16 Broadway Season!

Those of you that know me know that I’ve grown to love and embrace my new (is it still new if I’ve been here 7 years?) city, Cleveland. I’m always celebrating Cleveland and telling friends and family who are not from here how great it is and what the city has to offer.

One of the things I love about this city is our amazing theaters and performances that I’m lucky enough to attend and are literally a walk away from my apartment. As you may know, Playhouse Square is the country’s largest performing arts center outside of New York City. This week, I was lucky enough to be invited to the 2015-2016Broadway Series Launch Party AND I got to go with my sister-in-law Mary for a lovely girls night!

AND for what you’ve all been waiting for – at the party, I got to hear what shows are coming to Cleveland next season. Here’s what’s coming to town!

20150331_204950

What am I most excited about? If I had to choose only 3:

  1. I’m SO excited for some of these shows, especially Matilda. I LOVED the book growing up and then the movie and am so ready to see the show brought to life on stage!

20150331_203204

2. If/Then looks really interesting and good. I love the plot line (a 30-something year old woman trying to determine her future, find herself, etc.) AND I’ve heard it’s MADE for RENT fans (ahem – me!)

3. Phantom. Okay, so I’ll admit I’m not the typical theatre junkie and obsessed with Phantom of the Opera, but B likes it and I want to give it another try. And in all honesty, the sat time I saw it we were behind a family that talked the whole time so hopefully this time with better seats I can enjoy it more.

Snapchat-2944064866928364083

Bonus: Beautiful. We got to hear several performances from this musical and they were incredible. I don’t know much about Carole King, or her music, but the show looks great and I’d love to learn more!

Some questions for you:

  • Okay, have you seen any of these shows? Any recommendations?
  • Do you have a favorite musical or one you’ve seen over and over again? Wicked and RENT and Newsies. Can I have more than one?
  • Have you used a selfie stick?

Dirty Dancing Giveaway Winner!

So last night as I was walking home from work, I saw someone who looked familiar on the street. I couldn’t figure out HOW I knew him, but he looked like someone I knew (and liked). As he crossed the street, it dawned on me – it was the DAD FROM DIRTY DANCING  (no, not the movie, the play that’s in Playhouse Square right now).

So, like the goofball I am, I shouted across the street – “Great performance!!” Thankfully he turned around, smiled and waved. Phew. I almost added “I love you!” but I’m glad I stopped. Because that would’ve been awkward.

Speaking of awkward, did I mention that Ali and I took a selfie on our way to see Dirty Dancing? Because that’s totally normal … right? I love my friends 🙂

but first ...

but first …

Anyway, I’ll get to the point of this post – to share the winner from last week’s Dirty Dancing giveaway!

Using random.org, it looks like the winner is LUCKY COMMENT #13!

Dirty Dancing In Cleveland – a Ticket Giveaway!

Ahh Dirty Dancing. It’s a movie that definitely brings me back. The story (innocent girl meets bad boy and falls in love), the music and of course, the dancing. Oh and the iconic lines – Nobody puts Baby in a corner … I carried a watermelon … and one of my personal favorites:

Me? I’m scared of everything. I’m scared of what I saw, I’m scared of what I did, of who I am, and most of all I’m scared of walking out of this room and never feeling the rest of my whole life the way I feel when I’m with you.

Anyway, when I heard that Dirty Dancing had been made into a musical AND it was coming to Cleveland, I knew I had to somehow convince B to see it with me – or plan a girls night out. So when Playhouse Square invited me* to their media night, I knew a GNO was in order!

Perfect GNO - flowers, candles, wine (not pictured) and cute coasters!

Ali and I got to the show a little early, with enough time to enjoy some delicious food from The District, who was catering the media event. We chatted with some people from Q104 and Cleveland Scene and enjoyed some treats:

Then it was showtime! When the lights went down and the music started, I was immediately transported back in time to 1963 upstate New York. The dancing was unbelievable, the singing great (there was one male and one female vocal who stole the show – they sing the famous (I’ve Had) The Time of My Life) and the story just as cheesy and romantic as I remembered it from way back when. Okay, maybe it was cheesier (seeing and hearing the lines from live actors is a little different from on your TV screen) but since I love the cheese I could handle it.

Overall, the show was enjoyable and it was a great way to spend a Wednesday evening. If you’re interested in learning more, check out the video and more information from Playhouse Square:

How many holiday gatherings is too many?

Sorry for not posting any life updates n a while. I know, you’re all probably wondering what I’ve been up to besides baking (because let’s face it, that’s all I’ve been posting about). Well, I assure you, the days these past few weeks have looked pretty much the same. Wakeup. Workout. Work. Go to ____ holiday party/get-together/dinner/drinks/etc. Go home, finish up last minute holiday activities or work, go to bed. Repeat.

Don’t get me wrong, I LOOOVE all my holiday gatherings and love a chance to catch up with different people – I realllly love this time of era and the holiday lights, drinks, get=togethers, sparkly outfits, etc. but it hasn’t given me a lot of time to blog! Anyway, here are a few ways I’ve been enjoying the holidays in Cleveland before heading home to New York:

Running in the mornings when it’s cold and dark can be tough but with views like this? It isn’t soooo bad:

Drinks (and dinner) with my sisters-in-law! Every year in lieu of gifts during the holidays we all make time to hang out – for dinner, drinks, or really anything we want. We were going to get manis this year but it didn’t work out so instead, a delicious meal and tasty festive drinks.

Holiday baking makes me happy. I wish it were acceptable to marathon bake like this yearround! (Recipe for the below peppermint Oreo bark is here)

The Holiday Flea! I love the Cleveland Flea (giant flea market with crafts, local food, antiques, etc.) all year long, but there’s just something about the Holiday Flea that makes me feel all warm inside (and it could be the holiday beverages).

So yeah, that’s what we’ve been busy with. How about you? Any holiday events still to come? What are you most looking forward to now that December is halfway done?

C Is For …

I hate to brag, but it was another beautiful weekend in Cleveland. Sunny, 80 degrees, absolutely gorgeous.

So I did what any good native Northeasterner would do when a sunny, warm, beautiful summer weekend rolls around – spend as much of it outside as I can!

The weekend started out with a surprise parade that I encountered on my way home from work that was kicking off Jazz Festival.

And then B and I decided to sit outside, enjoy the weather and enjoy some of the live music that was happening for the festival this weekend. Oh yeah, and some wine. Wine + music meant an excellent start to the evening.

We had already planned our dinner – brats and salads from our Fresh Fork share. B made them with some fried onions and they were amazing.

Fresh Fork-inspired dinner - brats, salad and fried onions

Fresh Fork-inspired dinner – brats, salad and fried onions. And yes, more wine.

Saturday started early with a 7 mile run with Nicole. Nicole is starting to train for 50K (yes, 50!) and while I’m not training for anything, I was happy to have someone to do the miles with. Though it was hot, humid and we may have stopped to walk and for water a few times, I was feeling pretty good by the time the run was over and I was ready for the day. Which of course started with my favorite salad at Rothschild Farms.

And then a quick trip to the West Side Market for an apple fritter and other goodies.

After the market, we headed to Hansa Import Haus to pick up some spicy mustard and summery hefeweizens. I LOVE a good spicy mustard and they have so many to choose from!

Saturday also happened to be the monthly meetup of the Ladies Craft Beer Society – a few ladies get together craft and drink craft beer. Reanna hosts it in Ohio City and it’s really just an excuse to admire her cute house, drink beer, eat snacks and catch up with other ladies. I am not a crafty person and my crafts never seem to come out (don’t even ask about the mitten I tried to make) … but this one did! Look at my string art!

I did something crafty!

After crafting, I decided to continue to hang out in Ohio City (where crafting was) and enjoy the beautiful weather by finding a patio. My coworker Cari and her fiance joined us and B walked over from downtown. Nano Brew was perfect – their patio was just filling up and I do love their food.

After Nano, we walked back downtown and met up with some other people who were outside at another patio. Beginning to see a theme? I’m envisioning a lot of summertime patios in my future this year.

Sunday started off somewhat early when B went to softball and I decided to be productive in his absence. It included folding clothes, some meal prep for the week (which included soaking beans, making chicken, boiling eggs and massaging kale … I love this stuff!), working out, hanging up my new craft, and some other boring stuff.

Meal prep!

Meal prep!

But when B got home – it was BEACH time! I’m beginning to love this summer tradition. all weekends should end with reading and relaxing on the sand.

The beach was a lot less crowded this weekend

The beach was a lot less crowded this weekend

And of course, after beachtime it was dinnertime with B’s family. This week were at his brother and sister-in-law’s house and enjoyed a super summery meal, followed by strawberry pie on their front porch. Dinners and nights like this make me almost ready to move to the suburbs. But then I remember how much fun we had Friday and Saturday going out and walking around downtown and Ohio City and the feeling quickly fades.

Some questions for you:

How was your weekend? Tell me something fun you did.

  • In your opinion, what’s your favorite summery meal? Turkey burgers or ribs. Plus a nice salad, pasta or quinoa salad with fresh veggies, corn and sweet potato.
  • Meal prepping  -yay or nay? Do you enjoy planning and prepping lunches and other meals in advance? Yes – if I have time, I love it. I love preparing the food, getting them ready for the week and the whole planning element.
  • What’s your favorite summery beer? I need suggestions!

A Dazzzzzzling Weekend

Wow, what a weekend. It was SO awesome that I’m pretty much speechless. Okay, not really – but I am suffering from some minor laryngitis … for real. But at least I can type, right?

Friday started with a 10.5 mileish run BEFORE work. Yes, that’s right – I ran before work with Nicole, a girl I’ve been running with who also signed up for the Cleveland Half Marathon (in less than two weeks!). We both had bus weekends planned so decided to get in a run before work early Friday morning. It was so nice to know that we’d done 10 miles before 7:30 a.m.!

Friday night was amazing. My parents were in town (YAY!!!) so we enjoyed dinner at Saigon, and then took in the Dazzle the District celebration. The live music, performances, crowds and of course the actual lighting and fireworks were incredible. For those that don’t know – my neighborhood is now home to the world’s largest outdoor chandelier. And not only did I get to enjoy the lighting of the chandelier, but I got to go with my parents who were in from NY.

Saturday I woke up with no voice. Like literally no voice at all. So instead of going for a run and playing tour guide, I took it easy. We went to West Side Market with my parents, then of course I had to take them to Cleveland Tea Revival (my mom’s new favorite place!) and then we walked around a bit and explored Ohio City.

Sunday my parents left pretty early – which was sad, but okay because I had an event to go to. I’m on the board of the Phi Beta Kappa Association of Cleveland and Sunday was our annual Scholarship Banquet. Each year, our organization recognizes 100+ local outstanding high school seniors and awards one a $4,000 scholarship. It was a great event and it was so nice to “talk” (my voice was still coming back) to the young students, their parents and hear what they had planned for their future.

Sunday night ended with some work and of course dinner at B’s parents house.

I can’t believe it’s already Wednesday … we’re already halfway through this week and soon ready for the upcoming weekend!  Some questions for you:

  • Have you ever lost your voice? What did you do to get it back? I’ve been drinking tons of tea and honey and trying to suck on tons of cough drops to prevent from constantly coughing/clearing my throat.
  • Are you Phi Beta Kappa?
  • Plans for Mother’s Day? We will be hanging out with B’s family. Since I saw my parents last weekend, and I’ll be seeing them again in a few weeks, we won’t be seeing them for Mother’s Day.
  • Have you ever done a long run before a work day as opposed to on the weekend? Would you do it again?
  • What are you looking forward to this May?
