Daily Deluge and So Long September

Well, last week’s fun, sunny and still somewhat warm fall weather was great … but this week brought chilly RAIN nearly every day. It was tough to get in my runs, especially since I’m trying to hold out on the treadmill until I really HAVE to, as it tends to wake up my kids when I’m on it at 5 a.m.  Then, during the middle of the week my husband and then son both got the stomach flu, meaning not much sleep. So, I had to get creative with my workouts this week. Thankfully, though, despite the rain, we had nothing like what the southeastern part of the U.S. had this week with the hurricane – sending everyone impacted by the storm good wishes!

Here’s how the week looked:

Fall Is Here

We had another fun and busy week here. From work events to block parties to birthday parties, it was full, and I was glad to be able to get in a few runs and workouts when I could. Now that fall is officially here, I’m trying to soak up every last week of the warmish/fall-like weather while we have it!

Here’s what the week entailed:

Finishing Her Run

This week, many members of the global running community found themselves feeling shocked and horrified with the news of the kidnapping and death of Eliza Fletcher. Liza, a mom of two, was out for a run at 4:30 a.m. before her family awoke. There are so many of us that see ourselves in this young mom, and feel sick thinking about what happened.

This week, I woke up anxious. I had a knot in my stomach before I went out for my runs. I ran more cautiously than normal, keeping my eyes peeled for any unwanted visitors. My ears were extra sensitive to the noises around me. I even second guessed running some days because really – is it worth it to go outside and go for a run if this is a possible outcome?

But I did run. And on Friday, I joined in the  “Finish Her Run” virtual event, where runners pledged to run for Liza, on their own time, as long as they felt safe. Knowing there were many other runners doing the same thing as I was going, I signed up and dedicated my miles Friday to her. I didn’t make it to 8.2 miles as she would have, but ran a little more than my usual 5 and got in 6 to celebrate her life.

August in Review

It feels like only yesterday I was writing and sharing my August goals. And now, the month is over? I wish months like February and March came and went this fast, not just the wonderful summer months! I don’t typically make monthly goals, but I came pretty close to keeping on top of mine for August.  First off, I had a pretty good month mileage-wise. Here’s how I ended up – almost 143 miles!

And here’s how it went in terms of my goals:

Back to School

This week brought back to school and some EARLY mornings for half the week. I now run early enough that I miss the sunrises and probably won’t see them again for some time! I also am on a time crunch and it impacts my running. Most days in the summer if I’m close to a mile or so, I’ll finish the last .2 or so. But this week, I made myself stop at a certain time, regardless of mileage. Maybe as we get back into our routines I’ll feel more comfortable being a minute or two late, but as we figure out our mornings, etc. I’m trying to stick to a strict schedule. Maybe in a few weeks, I’ll feel differently.

Last Week of Summertime

This week was our last week of summertime. School starts next week, along with early mornings, earlier (hopefully) nights and a change in our routine. So, this week I tried to take advantage of sleeping in a few last times and get in some good runs. I’ve really been enjoying getting out there and watching the sunrise at the end of my runs, but with the days getting shorter and having to get up earlier, I know that time is limited. I’ll have to start a countdown until next spring/summer when it starts again!

Here’s what the week looked like – including some of my sunrises:

Long Weekend in Upstate New York

This week was a little out of whack, workout wise. But for good reason – I was in Upstate New York visiting my family! It was the first time we’d been out there since GM was born, and only the second time since 2020 (thanks, pandemic). That’s why I didn’t get in a long run, or even every day of DR exercises. But I got in some runs with new scenery, some long walks, and – most importantly – some great family time.

Here’s what the week looked like:

Hello August

July was a good month. We had some good weather (I do love it warm!), I got in runs most days of the week, I stayed injury free, and ended up with more than 130 miles:

And so, enter August.  I only have a few goals this month as it relates to working out:

  • Stay injury free
  • Keep up the running (3-5 miles most days of the week)
  • Get in 2-3 “long” runs (6 or more miles)
  • Get in 2-3 stroller runs while the weather is still nice
  • Continue with my diastasis recti abdominal repair exercises

Sounds reasonable enough, right? We’ll see how it goes!

In the meantime, here’s what this week looked like:

A Few More Weeks

I realized this week that I just have a few more weeks of summer. A few more weeks of “sleeping in” until 5:30, a few more weeaks of running during the daylight and a few more weeks of my favorite season.

It’s bittersweet – I’m not ready for back-to-school and all that comes with it. So instead, I’m just in denial and going to enjoy the next few weeks and stop thinking about what’s to come. That’s healthy, right?

Knowing that, here’s what the week looked like:
