Brrr, Where Is Spring?

Okay, winter – I’m done with you. Really – I’m done and ready for warmer weather and less SNOW.

We had snow again this week – not so much – and even though we had a clear, mostly sunny weekend, it was still COLD. Like, 32 degrees high kind of cold. BRR! Still, it was a jam packed weekend with tons of stuff to do … but we bundled up, that’s for sure.

Thursday night, B and I went out! We went to see the comic, Gary Gulman, with one of my coworker/friends who is moving. We first grabbed sushi and mochi and then got to the show.

Gary Gulman is great. I’d seen him before and he did a few of my favorite sets, including this one:

Friday night, after I did a little shopping with some of my sisters-in-law, B and I ordered some pizza and spent the night in. I was pooped after our late night out Thursday, and the lack of sleep I’ve had lately. (Thank you third trimester and toddler!)

Saturday included some brunch at one of our favorite locales, Luna. FW enjoyed some scone and bites of eggs. I love their yogurt and granola.

Saturday we also went to our first Indians game of the season! Even though we are sharing season tickets and had plans to go to Sunday’s game, we had snagged club seats. B, FW and I went with B’s brother and our nephew.

Sunday was jam packed with stuff to do. As in, I left the house a little before 10 a.m. and didn’t get home until 9:30 p.m.!

We started off the day with a bridal shower for my friend Cuoghi.

Me and the beautiful bride-to-be.

After the bridal shower brunch, it was time for another Indians game! This one was a COLD one – even colder than the day before, not only because we were sitting in the shade, but because of the temps. They even announced that it was the coldest game ever played at the field in history!

Thank goodness we ended up with a walk-off home run to win, 3-1.

We were bundled up.

After the game, it was time to head over to B’s family’s house for Sunday dinner. We were celebrating his grandma’s 89th birthday! And we enjoyed some wedding cake samples from B’s sister, who is getting married this summer.

Not bad for a busy weekend? Not a lot of exercise or movement, but a lot going on!

Some questions for you:

  • Do you like baseball?
  • Have you ever planned a bridal shower?

WIAW: Birthday Treats!

Happy Birthday to ME! That’s right, my birthday was this week and B, FW and I had fun celebrating this weekend and enjoying some great weather, going for runs, spending time with friends, and more.

I also had some TREATS on Monday to celebrate my BIG DAY – so that’s what today’s What I Ate Wednesday is from!

The day started with going out to breakfast with B and FW! We went to Yours Truly (I know, I went there last week!) and this time I got the Eggs Bruschetta. They were so good! Two sunny side up eggs on top of spinach, tomato, parmesan and toast!

Lunch was a leftover veggie burger, kale salad and a sweet potato. And La Croix 🙂

Snacks during the day (in no certain order) included some energy bites! 20170123_095616

And mixed nuts …20170123_104724

Some tea and kombucha …20170123_095440

And an apple. Yup. I was snacky. 20170123_131547

And for my birthday dinner I chose sushi! It was so good – I got  veggie roll,  a rainbow roll and mackerel sashimi. And B and I shared this seaweed salad!20170123_191317

And with our dinner – some champagne. Because it was my birthday 🙂20170123_193001

Oh and some treats, of course! I made cookies and enjoyed these soft M&M cookies and some new Hershey’s Kisses. 20170123_173623 20170123_153658

And that was it! Happy birthday to ME! Some questions for you:

  • Do you like bubbly? I used to not be able to drink it but love it now!
  • What’s your go-to sushi order?

Oh, weekends. How I love thee.

What a glorious weekend. It was the perfect amount of fun, productivity and even somewhat relaxing. I haven’t had one of those weekends in a while and I was definitely due for one!

Friday night, B and I played it low-key and decided to enjoy a patio meal. We hit up Sushi 86 and it was still warm enough to eat outside. I love warm September nights.

Saturday morning started somewhat early. I had plans to meet up with Mary to go for a run. She had 13 miles to run and I wanted to do 8, so I met up with her about 5 miles in. We ran a one-way route, which was fun for a change.

8miles

After the run, B and I went about doing normal Saturday stuff. We hit up the West Side Market and Hingetown for groceries, coffee, scones and kombucha.

Then it was time for my monthly Ladies Craft Beer Society! This month we were drinking ciders and making leaf bowls! (craft: here)

Saturday night, B and I decided to have dinner while watching some games – so we hit up a sports bar and I found a drink that is a a combination of two of my favorite Southern Tier beers – Warlock AND Pumking! It tasted like fall in a glass.

Sunday, after a short workout, B and I headed to Dave and Ansons to girl out and watch the Browns game. The Browns ended up winning! We also had a really good meal – steak, watermelon, quinoa salad and some buckeyes that I had made for dessert.

It was such a gorgeous day that we decided to also walk to Mitchells for ice cream.

I know there are just a few days left where we can really enjoy the weather, so I’m trying to stay outside as long as possible. Thankfully, the weather for this week is looking amazing. Guess there may be some patio meals in my future!

Some things I’m looking forward to this week:

  • Some work travel. Two days out of the office means the week will FLY by!
  • Gorgeous weather.
  • Akron marathon relay this Saturday. I’m nervous (it’s my first relay), but I’m really trying to step outside my comfort zone!

Hope you have a marvelous Monday!

Some questions for you:

  • What’s your favorite type of sushi?
  • What are you looking forward to this week?

Wine Night! And a nearly photoless Sunday

We’re at the point of the summer we’re I inevitably start to panic that the warm nights and beach days are going to be ending soon and there’s nothing I can do to stop it. I try to soak in as much time outside as I can, drink a few too many fruity drinks or summery beers, get in as many outdoor runs as I can (even when I haven’t taken a day off in weeks) and wear shorts even when it’s a little too cool or buggy outside. Am I the only one who does this? Am I the only one who really really loves summer and doesn’t want it to end?

Anyway, for the first weekend since May, B and I didn’t have any plans going into the weekend. A few things on our to-do lists, yes, but no concrete, must-do plans. Which meant that we could do whatever we want! And we did.

Friday started with happy hour with a few coworkers. After happy hour, I found myself doing something I hardly ever do after a drink or two – went back to work and THEN made dinner. We had found ourselves with a TON of zucchini from our CSA and overzealous farm stand visit and they had to be used. So I cooked some of those and the pork tenderloin we had gotten at the West Side Market the week prior.

Pretty low-key night, followed by several episodes of Orange is the New Black. Shh, don’t tell me how it ends (I’ve heard this season’s ending is cuhh-raaazy) – but we only have a few episodes left.

Saturday started off as usual. Started off with a nice 6 mile run with B, followed by a trip to the Souper Market, the West Side Market and then Cleveland Tea Revival. Yes, I’m a creature of habit.

After the Market, it started raining a little bit so we spent the afternoon indoors. Meaning I got in some baking. Whatchamacallit bars (peanut butter rice krispee treats with caramel and chocolate – SO GOOD the recipe is here) and lemon blueberry bread!

Later that afternoon, B told me to grab a light jacket because we were going somewhere. Where? I had no idea. A walk? A picnic? We had bought some cheese and bread at the Market so I was sure we were going to walk to the water for a snack.  Was I right? Not really – we ended up getting in the car and driving to Wine Country in Northeast Ohio!

First stop – the Red Eagle Bar and Distillery next to our favorite winery. We did a tasting of their bourbon, rye and vodka. I ended up getting a ginger bourbon drink they had on special which was great!

Next stop – South River Winery. South River is my favorite winery that B and I have gone to together and we enjoyed some flights, our bread & cheese and a great night to sit outside. The Polar Vortex (yes, it’s back) hit us this weekend so it was a little chilly but the rain had let up for us. The South River property is beautiful – it’s a nice somewhat quiet winery (they don’t allow tour buses, etc.) and it was great to enjoy a snack and some wine on a relaxing Saturday night.

A few hours later we decided it was time to head back downtown and grab dinner. We stopped by Sushi 86, which pretty much made my night. Baking, running, wine, cheese, and sushi? I think I had the perfect Saturday.

Sunday was another relaxing day- I went to watch B play softball, but the game was cancelled. So we decided to use the time to clean the apartment (meaning B cleaned the apartment) and I got to go for another run, this time about 7.6 miles and around Ohio City. I ran to the Hingetown Market which had a great showing.

7 20 run

After a lazy Sunday, we enjoyed a perfect summery meal at B’s parents house. Ribs, corn, and ice cream.

Is there a better end to a no-plans weekend?

Now it’s your turn! Some questions for you:

  1. When was the last time you had a no-plans weekend? What did you do?
  2. Do you make your own ice cream? What fun flavors do you make?
  3. What’s your favorite type of sushi?

Do you have a favorite wine?

Do you like bourbon or rye?

B’s Weekend

I’ll be the first to admit it – I haven’t been the nicest person lately. I’ve been stressed, busy, not getting as much sleep as I need, and all that makes for a not-so-nice Melissa. And B has been great through it all. When I have a few moments, he’s more than willing to watch whatever I want on TV – even if it’s my new favorite series Call the Midwife – make me breakfast AND dinner and even buy me flowers just because. So Thursday night I declared that this would be B’s weekend. We would do whatever he wanted to do, starting Friday night.

It may not have been my idea of a perfect weekend – but don’t tell B, I still had a pretty good time.

Here’s what we did:

Friday started with Happy Hour after work at Moriarty’s. After consuming a few Christmas Ales, it was decided that we’d go to our favorite BYOB sushi place (yes, Sushi 86 again). Post-sushi? Stopping by Parnell’s for the perfectly poured Guinness. Not too shabby right?

Saturday started early – B’s alarm went off and he declared we’d be running the St. Luke Church Pilgrim Run 5K, a race his aunt, uncle and cousins were running. Normally I’m all for the occasional Saturday morning 5k race. Especially with sunny, 50 degree weather, as it somehow was this Saturday. Plus, the race was in one of my old favorite neighborhoods and the course was on a street lined with beautiful still colorful fall trees. But after a few Friday evening drinks, my body did not want to get out of bed. Or run. College Melissa – I am not. But – as I had said, it was B’s weekend. So off to the race we went, the last two to register that day and the last two to arrive to the starting line just as it was getting started. Guess I’m glad we went – I somehow placed First Overall Female and B took home the award for Second Male in his age group! Oh yeah, his uncle and cousins (did I mention that they’re under ten years old??) also took home awards. Not too bad 🙂

The race was followed by a trip to the West Side Market to pick up some food for the week and then Gallucci’s for wine and supplies for dinner – pizza, B’s favorite.

After making sauce and pizza, it was time to head out to B’s choice of Saturday evening entertainment – checking out the Cleveland Comedy Festival, including the headliner, Todd Barry. B listens to his podcast and had heard he was in town – just down the street from where we live, so it was easy to walk over, get tickets, and enjoy the show.

We often spend Sundays cleaning, and this weekend was no different. The day started with espresso beverages (mocha for B, latte for me) and doughnuts, followed by cleaning our bathrooms and kitchen. B could probably tell I was antsy to told me that he’d handle most of the cleaning if I wanted to enjoy the 60 degree weather and go for a run. Of course I did! I ended up staying indoors but was still grateful and happy to get in a run.

Post-run, B and I went to Winks to watch the Browns game with Dave and Anson who are both from greater Cincinnati. Sadly, it was NOT a good game for us Browns fans. Ahh well. Maybe next week? Thus is the life of a Browns fan.

How were your weekends? Some questions for you:

  • Did you run any races this weekend?
  • What is your idea of the perfect weekend? Mine would probably include some sunshine/sunbathing, some froyo, some sushi, some baking, some running, shopping and perhaps sleeping in. Oh, and maybe some bubbly just because.
  • What was the best thing you ate this weekend? Hmm, it’s a toss up – either my Friday night sushi or the homemade sauce we had Saturday night. Or the apple fritter at the West Side Market.

Friday Five: How Is It November Already?

Friday !! Friday !! YAY !! Can you sense my excitement? It seems like it’s been forever since I updated you on my life – and instead of spending a long time doing that I’m going to just show you FIVE things. And then go off and enjoy my Friday. Sound good?

Okay. Here’s what’s happening. Sorry in advance for the complete randomness.

1. I’m still LOVING the fall colors in Cleveland. Seriously – it’s NOVEMBER already and even though it was 65 degrees earlier this week, Thanksgiving is right around the corner. Anyway, just look at these trees. Oh, and my cute nephew too:

2. B, Mary and me did a 5k last weekend and I got a PR! My goal was to finish in under 25 minutes – and sadly I didn’t make it 😦 My finish time was 25:23 and I finished first in my age group! Yes, it was a small race – but I got my first 1st Place medal!

PR and first place

3. My new favorite dinner slash food combo? Sushi and champagne / prosecco. Yum. WHY have I never had this combo before? Thanks to my fave Cleveland sushi place Sushi 86 for fulfilling my addiction.

4. Do you know A Great Big World? Do you watch The Voice? They are two of my current favorite things – and they CAME TOGETHER this week. One of my favorite A Great Big World songs is Say Something. And Xtina performed it on The Voice earlier this week. If you don’t know A Great Big World, you must check them out. My brother introduced me to them / Ian Axel a few years ago (I found the email – January 2010) and they have been my jam for a while now. Enjoy!

5. Speaking of my brother – he is in town visiting me from NY! I’m SO excited to have him spending the weekend with me. What should we do? What should I show him in Cleveland? It’s been WAY too long since I’ve seen him.

Siblings :)

Siblings 🙂

Questions for you:

  • Clevelanders – what should I show / do with my brother while he’s in town visiting?
  • Anyone have any races this weekend? Recent PRs?
  • How often do you see your siblings?
  • Do you like it when your favorite bands from a few years ago hit the mainstream spotlight?
