Wintry Weekend

So it seems like winter is here in Northeast Ohio. We finally got our first real snow downtown – meaning it actually stuck – and it feels cold. So it was the perfect weekend to hang in and do pretty much nothing. Yup, B and I had a relaxing weekend and it felt so good!

Some scenes from our relaxing weekend (in no certain order):

Making pizza for dinner. We babysat Celia Saturday night and that meant making pizza and watching the final Star Wars movie I need to see – Return of the Jedi!

Brunch after the race. Yes, that’s a turkey burger with eggs. It was an interesting combo. And it made me remember that I don’t really like scrambled eggs.

And then catching up on OITNB. I kinda got lost in Season 3 and am working on getting through it. I love the show, but admit that I’m having trouble getting through this season.

Some questions for you:

  • Do you like Orange Is The New Black? Have you gotten through Season 3?
  • What’s your favorite kind of sushi?

Have a great week! I’m linking up with Erin for my weekend snapshot post, Katie for MIMM and of course, the weekly wraps.

Oh, weekends. How I love thee.

What a glorious weekend. It was the perfect amount of fun, productivity and even somewhat relaxing. I haven’t had one of those weekends in a while and I was definitely due for one!

Friday night, B and I played it low-key and decided to enjoy a patio meal. We hit up Sushi 86 and it was still warm enough to eat outside. I love warm September nights.

Saturday morning started somewhat early. I had plans to meet up with Mary to go for a run. She had 13 miles to run and I wanted to do 8, so I met up with her about 5 miles in. We ran a one-way route, which was fun for a change.

After the run, B and I went about doing normal Saturday stuff. We hit up the West Side Market and Hingetown for groceries, coffee, scones and kombucha.

Then it was time for my monthly Ladies Craft Beer Society! This month we were drinking ciders and making leaf bowls! (craft: here)

Saturday night, B and I decided to have dinner while watching some games – so we hit up a sports bar and I found a drink that is a a combination of two of my favorite Southern Tier beers – Warlock AND Pumking! It tasted like fall in a glass.

Sunday, after a short workout, B and I headed to Dave and Ansons to girl out and watch the Browns game. The Browns ended up winning! We also had a really good meal – steak, watermelon, quinoa salad and some buckeyes that I had made for dessert.

It was such a gorgeous day that we decided to also walk to Mitchells for ice cream.

I know there are just a few days left where we can really enjoy the weather, so I’m trying to stay outside as long as possible. Thankfully, the weather for this week is looking amazing. Guess there may be some patio meals in my future!

Some things I’m looking forward to this week:

  • Some work travel. Two days out of the office means the week will FLY by!
  • Gorgeous weather.
  • Akron marathon relay this Saturday. I’m nervous (it’s my first relay), but I’m really trying to step outside my comfort zone!

Hope you have a marvelous Monday!

Some questions for you:

  • What’s your favorite type of sushi?
  • What are you looking forward to this week?

B’s Weekend

I’ll be the first to admit it – I haven’t been the nicest person lately. I’ve been stressed, busy, not getting as much sleep as I need, and all that makes for a not-so-nice Melissa. And B has been great through it all. When I have a few moments, he’s more than willing to watch whatever I want on TV – even if it’s my new favorite series Call the Midwife – make me breakfast AND dinner and even buy me flowers just because. So Thursday night I declared that this would be B’s weekend. We would do whatever he wanted to do, starting Friday night.

It may not have been my idea of a perfect weekend – but don’t tell B, I still had a pretty good time.

Here’s what we did:

Friday started with Happy Hour after work at Moriarty’s. After consuming a few Christmas Ales, it was decided that we’d go to our favorite BYOB sushi place (yes, Sushi 86 again). Post-sushi? Stopping by Parnell’s for the perfectly poured Guinness. Not too shabby right?

Saturday started early – B’s alarm went off and he declared we’d be running the St. Luke Church Pilgrim Run 5K, a race his aunt, uncle and cousins were running. Normally I’m all for the occasional Saturday morning 5k race. Especially with sunny, 50 degree weather, as it somehow was this Saturday. Plus, the race was in one of my old favorite neighborhoods and the course was on a street lined with beautiful still colorful fall trees. But after a few Friday evening drinks, my body did not want to get out of bed. Or run. College Melissa – I am not. But – as I had said, it was B’s weekend. So off to the race we went, the last two to register that day and the last two to arrive to the starting line just as it was getting started. Guess I’m glad we went – I somehow placed First Overall Female and B took home the award for Second Male in his age group! Oh yeah, his uncle and cousins (did I mention that they’re under ten years old??) also took home awards. Not too bad 🙂

The race was followed by a trip to the West Side Market to pick up some food for the week and then Gallucci’s for wine and supplies for dinner – pizza, B’s favorite.

After making sauce and pizza, it was time to head out to B’s choice of Saturday evening entertainment – checking out the Cleveland Comedy Festival, including the headliner, Todd Barry. B listens to his podcast and had heard he was in town – just down the street from where we live, so it was easy to walk over, get tickets, and enjoy the show.

And an after-show drink at the District. How pretty is this pear martini? It was delicious, too! We’ll have to go back another time.

We often spend Sundays cleaning, and this weekend was no different. The day started with espresso beverages (mocha for B, latte for me) and doughnuts, followed by cleaning our bathrooms and kitchen. B could probably tell I was antsy to told me that he’d handle most of the cleaning if I wanted to enjoy the 60 degree weather and go for a run. Of course I did! I ended up staying indoors but was still grateful and happy to get in a run.

Post-run, B and I went to Winks to watch the Browns game with Dave and Anson who are both from greater Cincinnati. Sadly, it was NOT a good game for us Browns fans. Ahh well. Maybe next week? Thus is the life of a Browns fan.

How were your weekends? Some questions for you:

  • Did you run any races this weekend?
  • What is your idea of the perfect weekend? Mine would probably include some sunshine/sunbathing, some froyo, some sushi, some baking, some running, shopping and perhaps sleeping in. Oh, and maybe some bubbly just because.
  • What was the best thing you ate this weekend? Hmm, it’s a toss up – either my Friday night sushi or the homemade sauce we had Saturday night. Or the apple fritter at the West Side Market.

Friday Five: How Is It November Already?

Friday !! Friday !! YAY !! Can you sense my excitement? It seems like it’s been forever since I updated you on my life – and instead of spending a long time doing that I’m going to just show you FIVE things. And then go off and enjoy my Friday. Sound good?

Okay. Here’s what’s happening. Sorry in advance for the complete randomness.

1. I’m still LOVING the fall colors in Cleveland. Seriously – it’s NOVEMBER already and even though it was 65 degrees earlier this week, Thanksgiving is right around the corner. Anyway, just look at these trees. Oh, and my cute nephew too:

fall colors

oliver and the tree

2. B, Mary and me did a 5k last weekend and I got a PR! My goal was to finish in under 25 minutes – and sadly I didn’t make it 😦 My finish time was 25:23 and I finished first in my age group! Yes, it was a small race – but I got my first 1st Place medal!

PR and first place

3. My new favorite dinner slash food combo? Sushi and champagne / prosecco. Yum. WHY have I never had this combo before? Thanks to my fave Cleveland sushi place Sushi 86 for fulfilling my addiction.

4. Do you know A Great Big World? Do you watch The Voice? They are two of my current favorite things – and they CAME TOGETHER this week. One of my favorite A Great Big World songs is Say Something. And Xtina performed it on The Voice earlier this week. If you don’t know A Great Big World, you must check them out. My brother introduced me to them / Ian Axel a few years ago (I found the email – January 2010) and they have been my jam for a while now. Enjoy!

5. Speaking of my brother – he is in town visiting me from NY! I’m SO excited to have him spending the weekend with me. What should we do? What should I show him in Cleveland? It’s been WAY too long since I’ve seen him.

Siblings :)

Siblings 🙂

Questions for you:

  • Clevelanders – what should I show / do with my brother while he’s in town visiting?
  • Anyone have any races this weekend? Recent PRs?
  • How often do you see your siblings?
  • Do you like it when your favorite bands from a few years ago hit the mainstream spotlight?

Weekend Update – the Carney Games!

My whole body is SORE. Not from a super hard weight lifting/pump/workout class – but from a run and softball game. That’s right – softball. I played a sport this weekend that required hand and eye coordination  – both of which I don’t have (which is why I run). And I’m paying for it now. Ouch!

This weekend, B’s family got together for their sorta-annual Carney Games! The Carney Games does not sadly, involve any cool carnival games – but it is a big family reunion/engagement party for his cousin/sporting competition/lots of eating and drinking. I admit, I was somewhat nervous. I’m not a softball player. I’m not an athletic person. Well unless you count being able to run athletic. But even that is debatable.  But it was actually a great weekend with some fun activities, great food and good company. Here are a few highlights:

Right before the weekend started, B and I snagged awesome seats (fourth row behind the dugout) to the Indians game. It was a gorgeous night – sadly the Indians didn’t do so well …

B and I enjoyed an Indians game. fourth row seats ... but caught a loss. But a gorgeous night!

Then Saturday morning our alarm went off at 6:15 a.m. (too early for a weekend in my opinion) so we’d have time to get in a training run before the Carney Games began. We had 7 on the schedule and ran it with B’s sister Mary throughout the beautiful University Circle and Cultural Gardens. Definitely nice change of pace and it was another beautiful morning – upper 60s, partly cloudy – perfect for a run!

7 miler

Then it was time to get on the road for the Carney Games and play some serious softball. I was nervous. What if we lost  — because of me? I was catcher, and actually sorta knew what I was doing! AND I ended up hitting the ball each time I was up. Pleasantly surprised!

Then it was time for some softball. I was catcher, and actually sorta knew what I was doing!

B and me post-game. We have actually a super similar picture from the last time we played softball together! I’m surprised – I had a really good time. I didn’t suck terribly, and wasn’t in a high-pressure position, so that made me relax and actually enjoy the game. Plus, B loves softball so I know it meant  a lot to him that I actually played.

B and I have a very similar picture from the softball game two years ago. <3

Photo of the winning team. B’s family and extended family. I’m actually standing next to his cousin Michele who said she reads this blog! Hi Michele 🙂

The winning team! Yup. That's us. I think we won like 16-2?

The not-winning team. I think the final score was 16-2? See how serious it is – we all have matching shirts!

After the games there was an impromptu pool party back at B’s uncle’s house. They live on a sorta farm – they have horses, lots of land, some plants and a pool. A great place to host a family celebration!

Isn’t Oliver the cutest? He didn’t play but looks adorable in that t-shirt (this picture is before he got in the pool). Oh and he’s holding up a #1 because our team won of course.

See all that land in the background? Anyway, that’s the poor pig that was roasted to feed us. There was tons of awesome food – fresh pork, pasta salad, veggies, buffalo chicken dip, cake, cookies, and more.

That is my plate of food. I’m sorry that i’m not sorry that I ate every single bite. Plus a cookie.

The next day B played some more softball with one of his leagues and they won their first playoff game! Woohoo! He’s played in this league for years and this is the first time they’re past the first round in playoffs. Exciting, I know.

While B was at softball I decided to go for a short run to loosen my legs. I was super tight, and I’m not sure if the 2 miles helped. I then hit the gym for the elliptical and some weights. I typically just use the weight machines but since my quads were tired from squatting while catching, and right arm was super sore from throwing all the balls back to the pitcher, I decided to do something different. I downloaded the Nike training app and decided to try out an arm workout and core workout. It wasn’t bad – it was kinda hard but probably because my arms were already so sore. I can’t wait to try it out again after my body recovers.

Yes, I started the “Butt Buster” workout but some of it (aka the thrusting) felt a little strange doing it at the gym so maybe I’ll do the rest of the 15 min workout in the privacy of my own apt… or gym.

After working out, B and I grabbed some coffee and started packing. That’s right – we’re moving in just a few weeks and finally started packing! Well … we put together half a box and got rid of two giant garbage bags of stuff – one to donate (I got rid of a ton of stuff – sweatshirts, coats, more).

We opted for sushi for dinner now that our favorite sushi place downtown is open 7 days a week!

And any weekend that ends with sushi and fro-yo is a good weekend in my opinion 🙂

Hope you all had a great weekend! Some questions for you:

  • Does your family have a big family get-together or family reunion?
  • What’s your favorite fro yo topping? I chose mango balls, a gummy worm, cookie dough and my favorite – HEATH bar!
  • What’s your sushi order? I got (not pictured) a rainbow roll plus a few pieces of just the fish  – mackerel and salmon roe. YUM!
  • Any tips for packing/moving? No – that’s why I’m asking you!
