The Week I Did a Nighttime Race

I’m not a nighttime runner. I pretty much always start my day with runs. I don’t even like running after work. So, when B told me that there was a 5k race on a Friday night that was a fundraiser for a board he is on, I was hesitant. I had run the race last year for fun after LM was born. But, I was home on maternity leave. This year, I’d be working all day and well – as I said – I’m not a fan of nighttime running.

But who doesn’t love a good 5k fundraiser? So, I signed up on Wednesday and ran it Friday. Here’s how the week looked:

Some highlights:

The race of course! Strollers weren’t allowed (dogs and walkers were…), so B watched the kids while I ran. I admittedly start the race with a cramp but felt like I was flying the first mile.

The second mile included a big uphill, and the last mile had a downhill. I ended the race with an official time of 25:43. The race was along the beach, so we had a great view. And we got some beach time afterwards.

Was it a PR? No. Was it the fastest I’ve run in a while? YES. Was I glad I ran it? Of course!

Questions for you:

  • Do you notice a connection between how much rest you get and the quality of your runs?
  • What are you training for?

Running the Miles with Nothing to Train For

Another week of running, but nothing to train for.

And that’s okay with me. I’m kind of liking running whenever I want, however much I want and not having to worry about getting in a certain number of miles during the week.

Not training doesn’t mean I’m not running – here’s a look at last week:

Some highlights:

Sunday morning I got in my runs around family activities. We decided to go out to brunch, so I jogged the 1 mile there. Then, after brunch I took a long route home and got in an extra 3ish miles. No running photos, but instead a pic of our brunch 🙂

Tuesday, I wore my new Skirt Sports capris and got in 5 miles before work. These capris have SO many pockets – they’re the best.

My runs have been pretty slow lately, but I also haven’t been sleeping enough or taking many days off. I wonder if I got more sleep or took a few rest days if I’d notice an improvement? I did finally take Saturday off (as you can see) after more than a week of no off days so hopefully that will pay off.

Questions for you:

  • Do you notice a connection between how much rest you get and the quality of your runs?
  • What are you training for?

Fitting In Running

The theme for this week’s running post “Fitting it in.”

Some weeks, running is harder than others to fit in. Work has been really busy these days, and I’ve been up late working nearly every night. So, waking up at 5 a.m. to run before work has been harder and harder.  I was also on a work trip this week, which meant not only working late and not being home, but getting up even earlier if I wanted to run (disclaimer- I did one morning, I didn’t the next). And if I do run, I often only have 30-40 minutes, so I’m not getting in the mileage I’d like.

So, it’s getting harder and harder to find time to run. And instead of getting down on myself, I’m going to look at the positive:

  • I still ran 5 days this week.
  • I ran outside 4 of those 5 days

Am I making excuses? Yes, somewhat. Was this week the worst week I’ve had in running in history? Hardly. But the lack of sleep  is taking its toll, and I need to do something to get more sleep so that I feel not only good to run in the AM, but also whole during the day!

Some questions for you:

  • What does a “good” running week look like to you?
  • How early do you wake up to run?

I Don’t Love Fall, But Fall Running Has My Heart

I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t love fall. Pumpkin spice lattes? Meh. Boots and jeans and sweaters? I’ll pass for shorts and a t-shirt any day. But fall running? Okay, you got me there – fall running is quite possibly the best running there is.

Why? The weather’s not too hot, it’s not too dark out, the scenery is most often pretty and the weather’s perfect for working on your speed.

Which may be why this week was such a good week in terms of running!

Some highlights:

I ran the farthest I have since LM was born! 6.22 miles to be exact. AND I felt pretty good the entire time. I was also happy with my pace – I haven’t been consistently at 9 something minute/miles but to do it for the whole 10K? I finished feeling so good!

Here’s how the week worked out:

One stroller run, one treadmill run (there were thunderstorms) and mostly outdoors. I am getting so spoiled being able to run outside- I am NOT looking forward to the cold and icy winter that is coming!

Some questions for you:

  • What is your favorite running season? Least favorite?
  • Will you run outside if there are thunderstorms?
