Still Feeling It

Man, I am still feeling a little worn out since my half marathon more than a week ago. I’m surprised it has taken me so long to recover — my feet are tired/sore still and my legs aren’t quite back at 100%. That said, I kept my running to a little less mileage this week.

But first, IT’S JUNE (yikes!), so here’s a quick look at May’s highlights:

  • Total mileage: 125.48 miles — not too high, not too low. Lower than my past few months, but still not my lowest month this year (Jan. and Feb. were a little lower)
  • Core work — I kept up my core work a few times a week nearly every week, minus when I was on my business trip and tapering for my race. But I’m back at it now!
  • Races — I did the Cleveland Marathon 5K and half marathon (their Challenge Series), and it went well. I ran faster than I did last year, but didn’t PR by a long shot.

So, I’d say May was a solid month. Not my best, not my worst, but overall pretty good. Here’s how the past week turned out:

Sunday: 2 miles running, plus 2+ miles walking B had to leave the house at 6:30 a.m. for a golf outing, so I was debating whether or not to run beforehand or skip a day. I decided to get up and had time for 2 miles before B headed out.

Monday: 4.1 miles run plus ~4 miles walk. It was great to sleep in for Memorial Day, but still get in a run before everyone in my house was up! I got in a scenic run and it was light out and it pumped me up for a great day. Later, we walked to a parade that was about 2 miles from our house, so I got in another 4ish miles on foot walking.

Tuesday: 4.03 mile run plus core workout. Waking up after a long weekend is always hard, but I was glad to be back in my routine.

Wednesday: 3.3 miles plus core workout, plus ~3 miles walking later in the day. It was absolutely GORGEOUS out and I was so glad to get in a short morning walk plus a lunch walk.

Thursday: 5 miles and core workout. I was pleased to be back at 5 miles after 2 weeks of less mileage, but my feet were pretty sore by the end.

Friday: 4 miles and core workout. I was sore again unfortunately, and took it somewhat easy with a walk/run.  But I couldn’t complain about the weather – it was 50s with a slight breeze and sun coming up during my run!

Saturday: No running, but lots of walking on vacation!

With school out, we decided to take a mini-vacation to Pittsburgh. We spent the day walking around the city, going to the Children’s Museum, and checking out their Pride Parade. Even without a run, I got in almost 19,000 steps from all our walking throughout the city that day.

Total mileage: 22.43 miles run + miscellaneous walking

Questions for you:

  • How long does it take you to recover after a half marathon to no aches/pains?
  • What kind of shoes do you wear walking around — do you wear your running shoes or something different? I’m looking for something fashionable, but with support.

I am linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down.

I think it’s really normal to feel tired after a half marathon. You had a busy time leading up to it as well. I do not wear my running shoes for walking. I have a few pairs that I like (the Lululemon and On cloud)

I’ve done enough half marathons, the recovery happens usually be the next morning. My legs were a little strained this morning, though. After a bike ride, I’m feeling pretty much recovered. I wear my Chacos sandals for a lot of my walking in warmer weather. I wear them for biking (the rubber soles are great for “gripping” the bike pedals), but they had fabulous arch support. They’re actually designed to be a sport/hiking sandal, I believe.

I usually feel a little worn out depending on my effort. Today’s half was HARD so I’m thinking that it will take me a few days to recover. Stay tuned.

When I’m not running, I like comfy shoes like Alegria, Dansko, Oofos and of course, my running shoes, lol

I think we forget how hard our bodies work during a race! It doesn’t sound like you had much down time.

I usually wear retired running shoes for walking. 19K steps is a lot!

I can imagine it takes a while to recover after a longer race and that it’s normal like the others here have said.
For walking before my injury I used my running shoes. Not the best since it wears them out sooner (if you do longer walks anyway) but I didn’t want to spend the money on a second pair of running shoes and thought I’d just upgrade them sooner instead when needed. Now recently, before getting my boot, I bought a pair of Altra running shoes, at the time I walked with one crutch (long story) and needed a metatarsal-friendly shoe with zero heel drop. They are absolutely lovely and will be my go-to shoes for walks when my foot is back to normal. In the meantime, they are perfect for my un-injured foot.

Aw, I’m sorry you’re still feeling it. I feel like you were unwell leading up to the race, so maybe your body just needs some extra time.

I am a barefoot lady, so I usually feel fine walking in sandals. If I need more support, I have a pair of Adidas Court shoes that I like.

    I bet Pittsburgh was fun!

Your May was great! but I totally understand not feeling 100% recovered. It takes time and I noticed for me it takes me even longer than when I was even 5 years younger. But then again I am in the thick of menopause.

I wear running shoes all the time basically. my feet are so messed up from arthritis in my toes I need to be comfortable rather than fashionable. That said I really love my new Brooks – they are black with a black and white leopard print :D. those I don’t wear for running.

Always wanted to go to Pittsburgh. My grandmother was born there and a huge chunk of my “ancestors” / family/ people I never knew but am related to emigrated from the UK and Germany into the US and settled in that area. I’ve never been, sadly.

I love my Hokas for long walks; most other more casual sneaks will eventually bug me, but not the Hokas!

19,000 is a lot of steps on a non-running day! Wow!
