National Running Day / Week

Happy belated Global Running Day to all my runner friends! Back in the day I used to celebrate by participating in a group run, or even running with some friends, but alas, this year I just celebrated by running solo. Which is still a celebration.

This week I’ve been a little tired and am getting over a cold, so my runs were not the best. BUT with summer officially here, I had a few reasons to celebrate:

  • Getting to sleep in! Since I don’t have to be ready in the morning by 6 a.m., I can sleep in and get out for a run a little later.
  • Daylight! The days are getting longer and I’m getting outside later, which means daylight for all my runs.
  • Trails! Because of the daylight, I am able to get in some runs where I don’t go when it’s dark – mainly on streets that aren’t well lit and trails. This makes my heart happy.

Despite the cold, here’s how the week went:

Sunday: 1 mile running, plus elliptical, plus 2+ miles walking We were in Pittsburgh for vacation, so while B took the kids to the hotel pool, I got in some gym time at the gym. I had less than 30 minutes because I still needed to shower and pack up before we checked out and went to the Pirates game, but it was a nice way to spend my morning before sitting at the game and then in the car-ride home.  Plus, I got in lots of steps as we walked around Pittsburgh before heading back to CLE.

Monday: 4.1 miles run plus ~4 miles walk. It was great to sleep in for Memorial Day, but still get in a run before everyone in my house was up! I got in a scenic run and it was light out and it pumped me up for a great day. Later, we walked to a parade that was about 2 miles from our house, so I got in another 4ish miles on foot walking.

Tuesday: 4.03 mile run plus core workout. Waking up after a long weekend is always hard, but I was glad to be back in my routine.

Wednesday: 4.5 miles plus core workout. It was absolutely GORGEOUS out and I was so glad to get in a short morning run, including a little bit on a trail. I saw another person running and he not only waved, but shouted hello and “enjoy your run!” which made me so happy and was the perfect addition to my Global Running Day run.

Thursday: 5.5 miles and core workout, then 2 mile walk. I got in a 4.5 mile run by myself, and then got in 1 mile with FW. It was so great to get out and run with him, and he killed it!

Later in the day I heard that we had an air quality warning in effect due to the Canadian wildfires.  But it was a blue sky! I decided to get out for a walk and it seemed fine … but who knows?

Friday: 4 miles and core workout. I was happy to get in some miles at a nearby park, because IT WAS LIGHT OUT. Man, I need to soak up all the sunlight I can during summer. No wonder why it’s so much easier to get outside these days than it is in the dead of winter.

Saturday: 2 mile run, then walk with the family.

Total mileage: 25.2 miles run + miscellaneous walking

Questions for you:

  • Any weekend trips coming up for you?
  • Were you impacted by the poor air quality this week?

I am linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down.

  1. We had really bad air quality in DC this week — it was really hazy and stinky — like an acrid, burning plastic smell. Luckily it cleared out by the weekend.

Sounds like you had a great week of vacation and running!

  2. Awful air quality here, as you probably know from your NY friends/family. It knocked out global running day, so I considered yesterday’s race my own version. Congrats on a solid week and enjoy all the summer shenanigans

  3. We had some air quality issues here but nothing like what they had out east! It was really hazy last Sunday on the day of my race. I’m blaming my poor performance on that, lol. Enjoy your daylight runs!

  4. Sounds like a lovely week, and yay to a little extra sleep and running on new trails! I am loving the long days here, the sun rises at 4:30 and doesn’t set until 9:30!

  5. what a great running week even with your break in PA! and isn’t the sunlight the BEST??? I just wish it wouldn’t get so hot here sometimes. Then again I’m learning to love the quiet morning time on my feet as well.

I do have a trip planned! in about 10 days we are driving to Paris for a long weekend!
