Weekly Run Down: Vacation, continued

This week continued our summer vacation. Last week, we were in Upstate NY with my parents (full recap here) and I still managed to get in a few runs. Some mornings, they would watch the kiddos while I went out on a run, taking in the oh so familiar scenes from where I grew up.

But on Monday, we said goodbye to my parents and headed to part two of our vacation, Philadelphia. It was just B and me and the kids in a hotel room, so I knew I wouldn’t get to sneak out for a run every day. But I was lucky enough to still get in some miles – and lots of steps just from walking! Here’s what the week looked like:

Sunday: 4.51 soaking miles. I was able to get in some miles at my parents house. It had been raining all morning, but stopped for a bit and I decided to get in a run while B and the big kids had breakfast. My parents were taking GM out for a walk in the stroller when they walked their dog, Sweetie, and I was eager to get out while GM was distracted. Well, it started POURING out shortly after I went out. But, it was 70 degrees and once I was soaked, it actually didn’t feel that bad. I got home wetter than I can remember ever having been – I could wring out my clothes!

Monday: 5.03 miles. I was eager to get in some good miles before we hit the road to Philly, and was glad we did. Long car rides are always more manageable for me if I’ve gotten in some movement first.  When we got into Philly, we did take a short walk after we unloaded the car.

Tuesday: No run – but 18,000+ steps! It was the Fourth of July and we spent the morning walking around the city, seeing the Liberty Bell, Independence Halls, and the Fourth of July parade. We walked around some more in the afternoon, and then at night we walked to the Independence Day festival. I ended up with plenty of steps without even going for a run.

Wednesday: No run again – but still 15,000+ steps. It was another day of no running, but lots of walking around on vacation. It was hot – feels like in the 100s! – so we didn’t even walk around as much as we normally would’ve.

Thursday: 3.11 running miles and the Rocky stairs. B likely knew I was dying to get out of the hotel and get in some running, and I was grateful when he suggested I get in a short run before we hit up the Franklin Institute. I had about 30 minutes before I had to get showered and ready, and made the most of it. I even ended up getting in plenty of steps – I ran up the famous Rocky Steps at the Philly Art Museum!

Friday: 3.18 miles.  We had plans to get on the road back to CLE, so I made sure to get out for a run again before starting our day. This time, I woke up before B and GM were awake to get ready, so I was ready to run before our daily activities began. It was HOT again!

Saturday: 5.16 miles. After being in the car until nearly 11 pm last night, and then in bed after midnight, I was tired. But, it felt good to be back home and running in familiar territory while B picked up some groceries with GM.

Total mileage: 20.9 miles run + lots of walking

Questions for you:

  • What do you prefer- running in negative degrees or “feels like” 100+ degrees?
  • What’s the hottest weather you like to run in?

I am linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down.

Do I have to pick? I’m not a fan of extreme temperatures! Heat is worse than cold, tho, IMHO.

Sounds like a fun trip with your family and I’m glad you got some runs in! That’s always a challenge.

Welcome to our lovely east coast summer weather. It’s pretty awful! We used to take our kids to the Franklin Museum years ago. Hope you had fun in Philly! Rocky steps are always fun

Yay for running the Rocky steps! I got to do that when I was in Philly for the RnR 13.1 (Sept. 2018), and it was a neat bucket list thing to check-off. Gotta love the statue of Rocky at the base of the steps, LOL. Ummm, heat vs. cold? You probably know my choice–HEAT!! Give me all the heat, baby!

Philadelphia seems like a great place to be on the July 4th! Lots of history there. The whole trip sounds great. To answer your question, although I run in the heat and humidity down here all the time, I’m not a fan of it. But negative degrees? My body wouldn’t know what to do!

What a fun trip! Philly on the 4th of july must be amazing! I don’t think i’ve ever run in negative temps, but I am more familiar with “feels like 100”. I guess the devil you know is easer than the devil you don’t!

That sounds like a super fun vacation!

My sweet spot if fall-like weather, but if I have to choose, I prefer the hot weather for running. With negative temps, there’s so much the body can do to keep warm at those extremes.

It sounds like you had a lovely vacation. I remember how nice it was visiting my parents and having them to watch the kids so I could get out early for a run.

To answer your question, I don’t like extreme weather in either direction. Surprisingly, though, I tolerate heat much better now that I’m older.

Good for you for getting in the miles where you could!
I definitely prefer to run in cooler weather, I think… but negative degrees is very cold LOL I just feel like it’s easier to layer up than to “cool down” when it’s in the triple digits.

I really don’t do well in the heat, so I guess I’ll bundle up for the cold!

Sounds like a great vacation and you did get some runs in!

I love that you got those miles in and made it work for you ! and how cool to be in Philly for the 4th of July!! I was in Philadelphia for just a few hours a long time ago and I absolutely had to run up the Rocky steps!!

I don’t like the extreme heat but can handle it more if it’s dry and not humid. The hottest I’ve run in was 44 degrees in Greece in summer, training for a marathon and had to get the runs in even on vacation. I think thats around 110 F or so? Insanity. who was I even, back then??

Way to get in all the steps and lots of runs even while traveling! Sounds like an eventful week.
