Back to the Routine

Well, we’re back from our family vacation and we had a great time. We spent a few days in Upstate NY with family and friends and then a few days in Philly to celebrate the Fourth of July. It was a great week off with the family, but now, we’re back in the swing of things.

Getting back into the grind during summer isn’t as bad in winter – after all, the days are still long, kids are still off school, so there’s no homework or waking up tooooo early to get used to again. But I do miss sleeping in, or as much as you can with 3 kids, including an almost 2-year-old!

Now that we’re back into the routine of things, this week included back to normalish running, and the return of core workouts. But, not as many steps – I dominated steps during our vacation when we were walking everywhere all day! Sitting at a desk daily does have a downside 🙂

Here’s what the week looked like:

Sunday: 6.23 miles! This was my longest run since the Cleveland Half Marathon and I was glad to get outside and I was glad to get in an informal 10K while most of the house slept. Everyone was tired from our long car trip back, and even though I was home around 8:30, I still was home before even GM and B were awake!

Monday: 5.03 miles miles run plus core workout. I somehow woke up earlier than I expected to, and found myself having enough time to get in not just 5 miles, but also about 15 minutes of core exercises, which is more than I typically do. It felt good to be out running in the morning in my neighborhood again!

Tuesday: 4.29 mile run plus core workout. This run almost didn’t happen. After very little sleep (GM was up from 1-4ish am), I snoozed quite a few times. But then I remembered that I had made a goal to run 4.2 miles today, in memory of a friend’s sister who had passed away last year and would’ve turned 42 this year. She had hosted a run in her memory over the weekend that I couldn’t make it to, so I pulled myself out of bed to get in the miles. I also got in a little longer core workout, mostly because I wanted to try a new video that ended up being a few minutes longer than I usually do.

Wednesday:  4.23 miles plus core workout. I had another not-well-sleep night, as at around 1 a.m. my oldest woke up with a bad dream and wouldn’t go back to sleep. So, he tossed and turned in our bed and I also did until he went back to sleep a few hours later.

Thursday: 5.02 miles and quick core workout. After two nights in a row with less-than-optimal sleep, it’s no surprise that I accidentally snoozed a little too long, and when I got up realized I could run 4 miles and do a core workout, or do 5 miles and no core. I did my 5 miles and had time for about 6 minutes of ab exercises – shorter than usual, but still something!

Not running-related, but that night I took LM on a Mommy/me date – we saw The Little Mermaid at the theater! She loved it and I enjoyed the comfy seats.

Friday: 5.02 mile run plus core workout in the morning I got out of bed in time to get in a longer core workout again, plus a five miler that felt good most of the time. The sky was gorgeous in the morning, I couldn’t help but snap a photo!

Saturday: 4.04 stroller miles – Our good running stroller (a BOB) was out of commission, but I wanted to get GM out of the house so I took him on our other one. It’s not as good, smooth, or easy to push, but I was glad to get GM in for four miles! He may have said “all done” after 2 minutes, but seeing 4 deer, bunnies, a train and plenty of cars kept him enthralled for 2 miles, then some goldfish and water (to eat and drink) kept him pretty satisfied the last 2.

Total mileage: 33.86 miles run

Questions for you:

  • Do you unpack right away after vacation or let it wait a few days?
  • Did you travel for the Fourth?

I am linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down.

  1. Reentry from vacation can be rough, but it looks like you had a great week!

I try to unpack right away, because if I don’t, then I lose motivation to do it.

  2. That’ a lot of miles – good for you in getting it done.

I usually unpack right away but sometimes I don’t have time.

I stayed home for the 4th and ran a race and then hiked and went up to our boat the next day.

Let me know if you come up to the Albany area again…

  3. I haven’t been to a movie for awhile (I think The Man Called Otto one?). I try to unpack the first day back (even if it’s in the evening), just to get it done. The laundry may wait a few days, however LOL

  4. Nice job getting back into it- especially after all the sleep disruptions (reading your posts always makes me tired!) And nice job with all the abs work- I’m trying to do core every day- sometimes I succeed and sometimes I don’t. Maybe your post will inspire me!

  5. It’s always hard to return to the real world after vacation. I had to do it this week and it was a struggle! I like to unpack as soon as I get home-it just feels so much better to get organized. I’m going out of town again this week–but at least I have a day to recover before it’s back to work.

  6. excellent mileage this week, especially with the couple of nights of bad/ interrupted sleep!! and the core workouts as well! great work!

I unpack immediately after traveling. But then again it’s just me and the husb and usually by the time we get home there is a ton of laundry to do, so that is task number 1 (unpack) and 2 (wash clothes).

Though we don’t celebrate the 4th here (even though I am from the US), we did have an excursion on the 4th that included a former American air base here in NL! I had no idea it existed (for shame! I’m here almost 30 years!!).

  7. Aw, what a great week. I haven’t seen The Little Mermaid yet, but I’ve heard great things.

We have been taking small trip this summer, so already we’ve been to Orlando twice. It’s been great.

  8. Great job on your workouts! Your Friday morning picture is stunning!

To answer your question, I always unpack as soon as we get home. Back when we had Virginia Tech football season tickets, if we had two home games two weeks in a row, I’d sometimes leave my bags out and half packed so I wouldn’t have to start all over just a few days later.
