Other Options

I am addicted to running. I can’t stop and don’t want to stop. I like the way it makes me feel. I like the way my body feels during (most of the time) and after (all of the time). But, it’s nice to have other options. I know that I’m not going to be able to run forever, and I know that it’s good to have off days, rest days and cross training.

That’s why I am excited to share that we’re building a mini gym in our basement! We don’t have a finished basement, but B has been working to make some of the rooms more useable. As of this week, though, we have a somewhat workable workout space! We have always had treadmill upstairs, but in our new gym we have some kettlebells, a rower and an exercise bike! So this week, in addition to running, I’ve gotten in some time on the bike for a change.

Here’s what the week looked like:

Sunday: 4.23 miles run and 10 minutes on the bike. I was excited to get in some of the bike time, but also glad to get outside to run before the rain hit most of the day.

Monday: 5.6 miles miles run plus core workout plus 6 minute bike ride. I opted to use the bike ride as a cool down from my run and it was fun to get back on there.

Tuesday: 4.2 mile run plus core workout and 1 mile walk during lunch. I got in a walk around the office at lunchtime — we have a decent size campus, so it was easy to get in one mile after doing a loop.

Wednesday:  4.16 mile run plus core workout, plus 3 mile walk later in the day. I was able to get out for a 2 mile lunch walk, and then a 1 mile walk while FW was at soccer practice. With that, I ended the day with 19,000+ steps, a first in a while.

Seen on my walk

Thursday:  2.15 miles run, 25 minutes on the bike (~7 miles) and core workout I was so so tired this morning! Despite going to bed early, I was unable to get out of bed at my usual time. By the time I finally got out, I knew I wouldn’t have enough time to get in a longerish run, but decided to check out my new bike! After a 2ish mile run, I hopped on the bike for a 25 minute ride/class. It was fun!

Friday: 6.2 mile run. I wish I could say this run felt good, but it didn’t really. I stopped to walk at 4 miles and told myself I’d stop at 5. Then, I got home and B had taken the kids to get bagels, so I decided to do 1 more mile before work, which turned into a full 10k. I’m glad I finished and my last mile was my fastest one!

Saturday: 5 miles stroller run/walk then 3.25 mile family walk GM got up at 6:15, so I decided to take advantage of being up early on the weekend and took him out for a stroller run! He did great – he usually wants to get out and run himself, but he didn’t want to get out this time! I had to keep walking for a little at the end, which was fine with me. Then, we got in a walk to the farmers market as a family and I got in a few more miles. It was great! Fall sports for the kids start up again next week, so I was glad to get in a nice morning with no plans.

Total mileage: 31.54 miles run plus 40 minutes on the indoor bike

Questions for you:

  • Do you mix up your activities?
  • On days that you do something besides run (like bike) do you make your step goal?

Enjoy your new gym! Last winter, I purged the boys’ basement playroom and made it my own workout space. It’s great. I don’t even mind the treadmill anymore!

You know I mix it up–I can’t run as often as I used to.

Yay for getting in some time on the bike! Cycling has been such a valuable addition to my fitness routine in recent years. I utilize the bike (both indoor and outdoor) for cardio, resistance (hills, LOL), and recovery.

Such a great week and such fun news! I was looking to put a small gym in our office, but then Mr. PugRunner moved back into it (rather than an out-of-home office), so that’ s a no.

Running and walking are the things that bring me joy.

Ooh, a home gym! I would definitely do more cross training if I had the equipment at home. It will give you lots of options, like on those freezing cold, dark winter mornings.

How wonderful with the new gym! That will be a great addition for you.
How you described running in your first paragraph were my thoughts exactly about running and what it did to me. I miss having something like that but i can make walking a good substitute.
I have also enjoyed adding cycling to my routine lately.

That’s exciting news about the gym.

    I wish I enjoyed biking… I haven’t taken my bike out once!!

But I have been going to the Y… that’s big for me.

How fun to add a home gym to your mix of workout options. I love ours and am so thankful to have it. You’re smart to cross train while you’re young. Even though I’ve lifted weights three days a week most of my adult life, I didn’t do cardio cross training and “ran all the miles” for far too many years. I might still be running more now if I’d run less then.
