More Than Running

Phew! We had a busy week and I am grateful to have gotten in my workouts this week. And I’m proud of myself this week – I tried something new! I finally broke out our new rowing machine and used it. I didn’t use it a lot, but I tried it two different mornings, which is a big deal for someone like me who typically only runs.

But before I get into how I did this week, I’m excited to share that October also actually went pretty well. Here’s what it looked like:

  • We ran two races! The Cleveland Heights Happy 5K was great-  I ran it with my 7 year old and he finished in 31ish minutes. Then we did a 1 mile fun run at my kids’ school at the end of the month.
  • I got in 144.02 miles of running plus about 56 miles of walking!
  • I got in core workouts 3-5 days/week
  • I maintained an injury-free status and hope to stay that way.

Sunday:  6.23 miles I had been up late Saturday night (till 3 a.m.!) so it was hard to get up at 7:30 when GM woke up. But, I did get out to get in a longer run, which helped wake me up for the morning at least. It was chilly out but mostly dry and it was nice to get out and explore some fall trails.

Monday: 3.25 rainy cold miles, core workout and 10 minute bike ride. I woke up to 40 degrees and rainy. That is honestly my least favorite weather. I don’t like cold rain. So, I told myself I could get in a short run and then get in some time on the exercise bike. So, I made it 3.25 miles in the cold and rain, and then turned into the exercise bike for a short (4 mile) bike ride.

Tuesday: 4.26 mi run plus core workout and ~3.5 miles walking. Tuesday was cold but thankfully dry in the morning, but I couldn’t get out of bed. By the time I did, I only had time for a shorter (rish mile) run if I did a core workout. Later in the day I did get in two chilly walks.  But trick-or-treat gave me plenty of additional steps to my day! We ended up going through four Costco bags of candy, so I’m pretty sure we got 300+ trick-or-treaters. It was fun to go out with the kids and also hand out candy.

Wednesday: 2 miles run, 10 minutes rower, 20 minutes indoor bike, 1 mile walk, and core workout. I woke up to snow. SNOW! Our first snowfall hit on November 1 and I wasn’t happy about it. I decided not to run in the cold and slippery snow, and instead take advantage of our indoor gym we’re building. I got in a 2 miles running on the treadmill, 1 mile walking, plus 10 minutes on the rower and 20 minutes on the bike and a longer core workout. It was my first time using our rower and it wasn’t bad! It didn’t bring back high school crew flashbacks that I had assumed would come.  It was nice to shake it up!

Thursday: 4.54 miles run and core workout.  The big kids didn’t have school so I got to sleep in! I actually slept in too much and had to cut my run short because GM had to get to school (and B to work). It was great to sleep in and wake up “naturally” in the morning.

Friday: 5.16 mi run plus 4+ miles walking. I was able to sleep in and get in a run before GM had to go to school. Sunrise was after 7:30 so it was a nice surprise to actually get out in daylight! And of course the snow was all gone, which made it even nicer. Later in the day I got in a few walks as well.

Saturday: 5 miles run and core workout and 10 min rowing machine I woke up to warmish weather and was grateful to get in a longer run than usual on Saturdays because FW’s soccer game wasn’t until the afternoon. I got in a run, and then returned home to an empty house so took advantage of the time to get in a short rowing workout and coreworkout.

Total mileage: 30.44 mi

Questions for you:

  • Do you ever use a rowing machine?
  • Did you get trick-or-treaters for Halloween?

I am linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down.

  1. We do a lot of rowing at CrossFit! It’s a nice way to mix up the cardio. We had snow this week too, but it only lasted a day. It didn’t keep the trick or treaters away!

  2. I’ve never tried rowing, but I know it’s a great workout. Your home gym setup sounds great- you’ll be set for the winter.
I was disappointed at how few trick or treaters we got, but we did get some. 300 is a LOT!!!

  3. I have not seen snow yet and don’t except to until next year. We tend to get snow in Jan/Feb/Mar here, if at all.

Rowing was always my least favorite part of Orange Theory, but I’m sure it’s because my form wasn’t great. I know it’s a fantastic full body workout and great way to get in cardio that doesn’t put so much impact on your legs.

  4. Snow! As I commented elsewhere, I’m going to stop complaining about our weather (my body is in shock after going straight from summer to winter, coming home from Italy). That’s a great mileage you did during October! And injury-free is always wonderful! I have a rowing machine but haven’t used it since April or so, because of my foot injury. I probably should give it a go soon again.

  5. Nice job on your runs, walks, and core workouts. I agree cold, rainy runs are no fun. I remember a particular 34° rainy 20-mile run where my husband and I were absolutely miserable.

  6. Looks like an awesome week- way to go trying something new! Rowing is an awesome workout, though I admit it’s not something I do either…but you have the option, which makes it so much easier!
