I’ve said this before – but summer is my FAVORITE season. I enjoy the warm (and yes, even hot) weather. I enjoy having the kids out of school and getting to sleep in. I enjoy the break in activities (right now we just have baseball, soccer and swimming!), the longer days, the vacations and really all of it.
So I’m here to say, I don’t want it to end! I hate that the first month is already over and as much as I love July, I don’t want summer to be over.
I also don’t mind summer running. Yes, we’ve had some hot days and had a heat wave where it was in the 80s at 6:30 a.m., but I’m always a morning runner and even when it’s hot and humid, able to get it in and then spend the rest of the day cooling off. My half marathons are typically in the spring or early summer, so I don’t have any big training runs and can run as I choose. I truly enjoy the relaxation that takes place in all areas of my life.
That doesn’t mean I take the time off – it just means I keep my base and run, walk and do as I please. Here’s how the week looked:
Sunday: 5.05 mile run, light arm workout, planking, 18 minutes on the indoor bike – It was FW’s birthday! I still can’t believe my oldest is 8 years old. Sigh. I knew I’d want to get in a run before our day of celebrating, so I set my alarm to work out and be done by the time the kids got up. It was 85ish degrees at 6:30 a.m.! The day also included some time at the trampoline place near us where the whole family enjoyed lots of jumping time – I was sweaty when we left, it’s a good and fun workout! We also saw Inside Out 2 and then finished the day with dinner at my inlaws.

Monday: 5.05 mile run, light arm workout, 2.4 mi walk – It was a gorgeous morning! I got in a tired run after the weekend’s festivities, and then a walk at lunchtime. I caught some cool sights though – a heron and a deer in the brook near our house.

Tuesday: 5.1 miles running, planking and pushups, 18 minutes on the indoor bike, .5 mile walk, light arm exercises – Just another sunny summer morning run! I was tired and my feet were a little sore this morning getting out, but I found myself enjoying the sunlight and being able to switch up my route to something different since it was daylight. I really love running places I don’t run in the winter because the roads are clear and bright in the summer! I was going to take a walk at lunch but after .25 miles it started POURING! I briskly walked home, soaked, so only made it about a half of a mile. Instead, I ended up doing some arm exercises before eating.
Wednesday: 5.02 miles running, 6 minutes indoor bike, planking and pushups, then 2 mile walk– I got in a little longer run and then was on the indoor bike when GM woke up calling for me, so I ended my workout a little early. I got in a 2 mile walk at lunchtime, which provided a perfect mid-day burst of energy. I love summertime and being able to get out and walk nearly any time to walk!
Thursday: 6.2 miles running, planking and pushups, 2 mile walk – I woke up tired! I actually got ready for my run, then found myself laying down on the couch because I was tired and wanted to rest my eyes before getting out the door. That never happens! Luckily after I got in a few miles running I felt pretty good and was able to get in a 10K in great weather. I was also able to catch a 2 mile walk in (~30 minutes) around lunch.
Friday: 4.6 mile run, 19 min on the indoor bike, some core work and light arm work, 3.2 mi walking – I woke up tired again – so tired that I ended up somehow snoozing for an hour?! I still was able to get in a run and then 2 walks later in the day.
Saturday: 3.1 miles running, 32 minutes on the indoor bike, light arms, planking and pushups – I woke up to a chance of thunderstorms and it said they were headed my way in 30 minutes. Yikes! I hurried to get up and outside for a few miles, and then was able to get in some inside activities too. I was so sweaty when I got home — it was so hot and humid before the rain.
Total: 34.88 mi of running plus several days of short indoor cycling workouts, planking and push ups
Questions for you:
- Was it still hot and humid for you? It cooled down most of this week but we still had a few days of hot and humid weather
- Do you do planks or push ups? How often/how many?
