This is Halloween

Whoa – where did October go? I feel like I blinked and not only was summer over, but it was November. My fall running has been a blur and not as good as usual – I took all September and part of October off thanks to the broken toe. But, instead fall included more weight training and indoor cycling, coming back into running just in October.

October was a fun month! It was fun with Halloween activities (more on that below), but also in terms of fitness. Overall, the month included:

  • 2 races – both I did with my son and one I walked when I was healing from my broken toe, but fun nonetheless!
  • Continued weight training — this time with free weights!
  • Lots of outdoor walking because FALL IS BEAUTIFUL
  • My return to running! I did about 92 miles, which is a low month for me, but considering I only started running partially through the month and have taken it easy on my toe, I’m okay with it.

Here’s what the week looked like – it was filled with lots of activity, from fitness to Halloween-themed fun, too!

Sunday:  7.31 miles running –  This was a good run! I got out later than I would have liked, but it was a crisp fall day — perfect for running! Later we had FW’s last outdoor soccer game of the season, and an end-of-season pizza party!

It was so pretty on my run – look at those trees. We’re just past peak but it’s still pretty.

Monday: Chest and tricep workout, core workout, 22 minutes indoor cycling, 3.19 mile run, 1.23 mile walk – Another week of doing a chest and tricep workout with real dumbbells, and it was hard again!  I also got in a lunchtime walk around my office campus – just 1.2 miles but it was gorgeous outside! That evening we got in a quick trip to a farm near me where the kids picked out pumpkins. It was so nice outside even at night!

Tuesday: Shoulder and leg day, short core work, planks and pushups, 15 minutes on the bike, and 4 mile run – After my weights, I got in some cycling and running. It was so warm out, I was in shorts and short sleeves! That evening we had a fun trick-or-treat event at a local school. It was fun for the kids to get dressed up.

Wednesday: Bicep and back day, plus short core workout, 17 minutes on the bike, planks and 3.34 mile run, then 6.5 miles walking later in the day. It was GREAT to use dumbbells again – it’s so much more efficient if I want to lift both arms into a bicep or hammer curl, and it’s also hard! After my short lift, I got in a FAST (for me) run —  I ran early with my brother-in-law and of course he’s faster than me. I finished the first mile in sub-9 pace, which I haven’t done in a while! I also got in a few walks during the day – one with GM before work, one treadmill while working (yay for multi-tasking!) and one at lunch.

Proof that I can run fast(er) when I’m with someone faster than me

Thursday: Leg workout, planks and push ups, 15 minutes indoor cycling, 3.1 miles running, 5.1 miles walking – That’s three Thursdays in a row now that I can’t seem to make it out of bed in time.  I made it out of bed later and started my workout later, but still wanted to get in a run. My legs were TIRED from the leg day workout AND fast run with my brother-in-law! Later in the day, I got in some good miles walking – a few miles before school and a few during lunch.  Then there was plenty of walking during trick-or-treat at night – and candy of course! Scroll down for a reel of some of our fun. My neighborhood, especially the street behind mine (“Scare-borough”) goes all out for decorating and the police even shut down the street to traffic – it’s crazy but I love it!

Friday: 5 miles running, 3.5 miles walking– I was SO tired Friday morning. I snoozed a bunch and somehow ended up with time for only 4ish miles. But since it was Friday and I was going faster than I anticipated, I ran another one to get in 5. Yay!

Saturday: 5.05 miles running and 15 min indoor cycling, then 2.6 mi walk with GM – I slept in Saturday and didn’t start my run until after making the kids breakfast – it was 9 by the time I got out the door, which was strange, but it was great to run in the day light! I felt surprisingly good and when I realized my first mile was in under 10 minutes, I decided to aim for that for the whole run. I did get in one 10+ minute mile but overall the pace stayed under 10 minutes/mile. Later in the day, I got in a stroller walk with GM where we saw the pretty colors and the lake. We also walked down Scareborough and saw all the people taking down their decorations, which was sad – I can’t believe Halloween is over!

Total: 31.22 miles running. Plus some walking, weight training, and indoor cycling.

This Friday morning I woke up, went for a run and noticed my toe was NOT hurting! I didn’t think about my toe during the whole run, except to marvel in the fact that it felt alright. And I made it to 30+ miles for the week, back in my old happy mileage. So yes, it was a GOOD WEEK for running.

  • How was your Halloween? Did you get many trick or treaters? We had 300+.
  • Was October a good month for you?

Wow- it’s like your injury never happened. Sounds like you had a great week of running AND strength! I love the Halloween pics- glad you had such nice weather!

I’m so glad to see you back at it again! And sticking with strength training. It will pay off!

We didn’t have as many trick or treaters this year–it has been dwindling every year. I wonder if people just aren’t taking the kids out as much any more?

Dumbbells are wonderful! You are doing so well with all your workouts, and you always inspire me to do more planks and push-ups, but I haven’t been able to fit that in yet (perhaps during November!).
My October sucked because of my foot injury, but lots of good things happened too. I could still do good strength training and I (sort of) got back on the bike.

So glad to hear that your toe is feeling back to 100%! Isn’t it great to go for a run and not even think about an injury that was bothering you so much just a few short weeks ago?

Your little ones are adorable in their Halloween costumes!

Awesome work with the running & continued cross-training. You’re getting a great variety of fitness done! I had two kids for trick or treating, LOL.

That’s so many trick or treaters!

We went to a friend’s house for dinner. I thought we were going to eat outside and watch the kids trick or treat, but apparently not. I heard it wasn’t a good one for our neighborhood.

You have overcome so much this season and I can’t wait to see what you do next!
