1,000+ miles (driving) plus running

The holiday season is officially here! And my heart and belly are so full. We had a whirlwind week – it included a lot of driving for a little family time. Do I wish we didn’t have to drive as long and lived closer to my family? Yes! Do I wish that we could’ve spent more than just a few hours with my family? Double yes! But at least we will be seeing my parents again in just a few weeks for Christmas.

Here’s what the week looked like – from workouts to hours in the car to carsick kids – here’s it all! It included 30 miles of running and 1,000+ miles of driving.

Sunday:  9.04 miles, start of my chest and tricep workout – I knew I wanted to get in a long run before our wonky travel week, but I got out later than I would’ve liked and I wasn’t feeling that great. My running jacket that I hadn’t worn since last year was feeling off- a little big, the hood was annoying me, and my phone was uncomfortable in the pocket that I used to put it in. I also had a side stitch/cramp from right away. At about 3 miles in, I got to my usual water fountain to stop and drink, but found it was turned off (for the season?!). Needless to say, it wasn’t my best run but I was glad to get it in. I also was able to start my chest and tricep workout that I usually get in on Mondays – since we were traveling on Tuesday I wouldn’t get in my usual four days of workouts, so I decided to get in some of Monday’s workout earlier.

Monday: Nearly full body weight session (finished chest and tricep workout, shoulder and leg workout, plus starting back and bicep workout), 4 mile run, 3.25 miles walking, 35 minutes on the bike – I finished my usual Monday chest/tri workout, got in my Tuesday shoulder/leg workout, did a standing ab workout and then was about to hop on the bike when I decided to just head out for a run. I got in four miles followed by a two mile walk with GM in the stroller. I got in some treadmill walking while working later in the day, and even a short bike/working ride. It doesn’t happen often, but when I have lots of reading/proofreading/reviewing of content, sometimes it helps me to move while doing it. At lunchtime, I decided to also get in some of my back/bicep workout for the week, knowing I’d be out of town on the day I was supposed to do it.

Tuesday: Leg workout, 4 miles running, 1.5 miles walking (and 4.5 hours in the car) – I snoozed nonstop Tuesday morning, so much that I almost didn’t have time for the run I had planned. I was hoping to get 3-5, and 4 would have to do. I got in a little treadmill walking while working before it was time for us to hit the road!

Wednesday: 2 mile treadmill run in the hotel, 1ish mile walking, hotel pool time (and almost 5 hours in the car with 1 carsick kid) – I had assumed Wednesday would be a rest day with all the car time and plans to hit the hotel pool with the kids, but while we were at breakfast, B encouraged me to get in a workout. I got in 2 miles on the hotel treadmill before we all jumped in the COLD hotel pool. I couldn’t spend more than 30 minutes in there because it was so chilly! Then we walked around the downtown area near the hotel, stopped at a local book store and coffee shop, and headed back on the road to Connecticut. GM threw up on the way there, but thankfully grabbed his barf bag just in time! It is our new tradition to meet up with my aunt, uncle and cousin Wednesday before Thanksgiving for a pre-Thanksgiving dinner. My aunt grabs our race packets during the day, and we get them from her at dinner. The past few years we have met up at a restaurant with Chinese and Japanese food and it’s great to get to see them before Thanksgiving, and my kids love the dumplings and sushi!

Hotel gym #1 had 2 treadmills but only one worked.

Thursday: 5K race (Turkey Trot!) and hotel pool – Turkey Trot day! We woke up early and it was 40s and raining. Did it rain the whole race? Yes. Did we still have a good time? Yes! FW, GM and LM did the kids race, where they all got bubbles and a ribbon. Then, B took GM and LM to a coffee shop to dry off/warm up while FW and I did the 5K together. I’m so proud of him! He only stopped to walk once, and finished in 26 minutes. It wasn’t his fastest 5K, but he still came in 2nd in his age group and left with a big trophy! After the race, we dried off/warmed up and then hit the next hotel’s pool. This one was warmer, thank goodness, and we spent a lot of time in there before heading over to my aunt and uncle’s house for Thanksgiving dinner, where my parents had also just arrived!

FW and his trophy!

Friday: 4 miles treadmill running (and two car trips for 11 hours in car and one more throw up – GM again) – I was able to get in a few miles on the treadmill while B took the kids to the hotel pool, because I wanted to get in a few miles before our many hours in the car. After the run, we hit the road to meet up with my other cousin and her family for lunch in New Jersey. This has become another Thanksgiving tradition and it’s great to see her, if only once a year. Then, it was back in the car for the return trip to Cleveland.

This hotel gym had only one treadmill – thank goodness I snagged it!

Saturday: 5.1 miles running (and 2.5 hours driving) – After not going to bed until midnight after our long and late ride home, getting out to run felt good – it woke me up! Then, we spent the day with B’s family – it was his annual family reunion/bowling outing a little over an hour away

Total:  30.85 miles running plus some walking and weight training.

Oh wow… that is a lot of time in the car, complete with barfing and everything! Sounds fun, festive, and exhausting. Congrats to your son!!! He did great, and I love the trophy. I’m sure you had a fun week, and I’ll bet you’re also glad to be home again.

Carsickness and motion sickness is the worst. I suffer from it, and so does A.

You sure did travel a lot but it sounds amazing. I love that you were able to fit in so much. And look at that big trophy! Love it!

Rest up! The rest of the holidays are on their way!

We had the same weather but for the first time I didn’t trot. I don’t mind running in the rain but driving when it was predicted to snow didn’t seem like a good idea.

100 miles was my goal but this has been an off year for the miles… maybe next year will be better.

1000 miles not 100 for running and yesterday we drove 7 hours for a funeral… Thanksgiving was local.

That’s a lot of travel! We don’t go anywhere! You know I am seeing those Peloton bikes in the gyms — did you notice if they were working or not — I see a lot of complaints about them not being set up right at hotels.

Huge congrats to FW. That trophy is almost as big as he is! 😉

Congrats to your son on finishing 2nd place in his age group! He’s gotta love that huge trophy! Kudos on getting in those workouts while traveling, and to your husband for helping out with the kiddos and encouraging you to do so. I did not run in a turkey trot this year for the first time in 13 years. We drove down to the farm to see my mom (about 6 hours each way) Monday through Wednesday.

What a nice trophy! That is one he will always remember. Kudos to everyone for getting out there in the rain too. That’s not always an easy one for the kids.
