One More Week

One more week … just one full more week and then the kids are off school and I can sleep in! It makes it a little crazy to have the kids off school and me home trying to work, get things done, etc. BUT sleeping in is a priceless joy that I thoroughly appreciate this time of year.

In other news, I’m excited to announce that I’m back again as a Cleveland Marathon Ambassador! If you’ve ever considered running what was voted the BEST RACE IN CLE – come and see me in Cleveland in May! I love doing the Challenge Series and running the 5K Saturday and half marathon on Sunday. As an ambassador, I get free entry and will get free entry to giveaway too (more on that coming soon).

If you’re considering signing up, I also have a 20% off code FOR ANY OF THE EVENTS (Yes this includes the Challenge Series, 5K, half, you name it!): SAVE20MELCARN. Registration increases in price Sunday, and will only keep going up so you may as well use it now 🙂

Anyway, here’s how the week went. The weather started off great but we ended up with snow mid-week and I got a broken Yaktrack! But I’m getting ahead of myself. Here we go!

Sunday:  9.05 miles outside, push ups –  After a week of snow and grey and cold, Sunday was warm(er) and sunny! I got in a nice long run in 40 degrees. The only issue was that it was still icy/snowy – with the weather being warmer, the snow was starting to melt and the sidewalks were gross and wet and slippery. Instead of my usual long run route, I decided to go out with a goal of 7 miles and just run through the neighborhoods, staying in the middle of the street. I wasn’t sure how bored/crazy I’d start to feel, but I ended up doing several loops and found a few clear streets and made it to 9 miles! My legs were tired by the end, but I managed it under 10 min/mile pace for the whole long run, which is fast for me.

Monday: Full body workout! chest and tri workout, shoulder and leg workout, 27 miles on the indoor bike, 8 minute abs, 4.35 miles run (1.05 outside and 3.3 inside)  – I woke up to pouring rain, so I decided to make it an indoor workout day and take the day off running after yesterday’s long run. I got in my usual Monday morning chest/tri workout, and then did my usual Tuesday shoulder/leg workout, along with an 8 minute ab video. I then had time to get on the bike. At nearly 30 minutes in I was dying to go run, so I told myself I could run outside for 1 mile before it was time to get ready. I went out in the pouring rain and had a great time! I tried to run a sub-9 minute mile and JUST got it in, barely. Then later in the day I got in a short run on the treadmill, bringing my total to 4.35.

That night we somehow ended up with NO activities so I got in some early holiday baking! I love baking and I plan to make at least 5 different kinds of cookies this year. I’m always looking for suggestions!

Tuesday: start of my bicep and back workout, 8 minutes abs, 6.3 miles run  – I got in my Tuesday weight workout on Monday, so I had some time to get in a longer run and was looking forward to it. It was nice to just get out and run and not have to worry about cutting my route back if I was short on time. I finished my run and had some time for a quick ab workout before getting ready for my day.

Wednesday: Finished my bicep and back workout,  8 minutes abs, 5.24 miles run, 1.25 mile walk  – I was looking forward to getting in another run – but it was a little colder and my body felt slow. I still somehow finished at a 9:45/mile pace or so, which is great for me for just a “get out of bed and run” pace. Last year at this time, my “get out of bed and run” pace was closer to 10:30/mile. It definitely depends on the day, but I felt so good! It started snowing later in the morning, so I was glad I got outside at 5 a.m. when I did. I got in a short walk at lunchtime too, outside. It was my first outdoor lunch walk in who knows how long!

Thursday: Leg workout, 8 minutes abs, 4.25 miles running (3.25 outside and 1 treadmill), push ups I woke up to snowy weather again, so I delayed going outside as much as possible. It was also cold (“feels like 4”) but I finally bundled up (2 shirts and vest, hat, gloves) and put on my Yaktracks and made it outdoors. It was slicker than I would’ve liked – I don’t mind running in fresh snow but it was actually icier than I tend to run in. I still made it 3.25 miles – and twice had to stop to fix my right Yaktrack, which seemed to keep coming out of place. When I got home I saw why – it was broken! Oof.  I had a busy day but was able to get in a short 1 mile run at lunchtime on the treadmill.

Friday: 6.35 miles treadmill running, 15 minutes indoor cycling – Without a working Yaktrack, I didn’t want to go outside on the ice and snow, so I opted for a treadmill run. I don’t love running long on the treadmill but I was feeling great this day. I watched some scenes from the Wicked movie a few times to get me into it – I loved the movie! – and that made the miles fly by.

Saturday: 1 treadmill mile, 25 minutes bike, pushups and 8 minutes abs – We had another busy Saturday filled with a soccer game, a play date, a cousin sleep over, holiday baking and and even a visit with Santa! I wished I had gotten in a full run but with the packed activities, my morning didn’t have as much time as I would’ve liked so my 45 minute workout had to do.  And since my yaktracks hadn’t arrived yet, I decided to play it safe inside.

Total:  36.76 miles running! Plus weight training and indoor cycling.

  • Have you started any holiday baking? What’s your favorite thing to bake/eat this time of year?
  • What do you do when it’s icy and snowy out – do you run in regular sneakers?

I am linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down.

I can’t wait to wake up at 6 or 7 to run in a few weeks. It’s harder to fit it all in if I wait until they wake up to work out, but the extra hours of sleep are priceless!

Yes, I can’t wait till school is done and I can sleep a little later!!! And, I’m starting my holiday baking today! Have you checked out Sally’s Baking Addiction? Every December she does a “cookie Palooza” and posts ten new recipes. I’m making one of her new ones- lemon cookies- and one of her old ones that I’ve made for years, the seriously soft molasses cookies. Your cookies look delicious- I love thumbprints.

And… great week of running and workouts!

Ooh I love Sally and will have to check out the cookiepalooza – thanks for the recommendation!

Nice combination of workouts! I’ve broken my Yaktrax by running on mixed ice and dry pavement. The asphalt just wears right through the rubber which is frustrating because there are often days when the streets are a combo of snow, ice, and clear road.

I haven’t started my Christmas baking and now probably won’t be able to fit it in until later in the week.

    Oh what a week!

You’ve had all the precipitation! Yuck!

I set up an appointment to get Santa pics at our new Bass Pro Shop, but A chickened out. I was super sad about it, but what can you do?

I love Russian tea cakes and butter cookies. Really, I just prefer the cookie dough, but that’s just me.

Congratulations on being back as a marathon ambassador! That’s amazing! You always have so much fun with that race and all the buildup.

when it’s snowy I run in my trail sho s. When it’s icy I stay home. congrats on your ambassador selection and all the miles you get done. I think I got in 15. I used to back a lot and give them away. Now no reason to. And I don’t want eat them myself.

I’m lucky to have plenty of people to share my baking with – I love baking!

I’ve had a spring pop on my YakTrax a few times! I have replaced them each time. Interesingly, I have used them less in recent years. I wonder if we’ll get much snow? I will run in my trail shoes if it’s snowy on the pavement but it there’s any accumulation, I will use the YakTrax.

In addition to baking the family favorities, I’ve experimented with a new cookie each year. The boys only want the same ones, lol, although the Twix cookie made the rotation–that one was a hit! Let me know if you want the recipe. It’s not made with Twix–it’s all homemade. Really good.

    1. Melissa (I Crashed the Web) Avatar

Yes!! We love Twix bars so a cookie sounds great. Would love the recipe!

I wanted to send you the link but it’s not on the website any more, so here’s the full recipe! They are delish and easy to make.

        Twix Sugar Cookie Cups

        Ingredients:

        • sugar cookie dough (I make my own)
        • Caramel Topping

        Milk Chocolate Frosting:

        • 1/2 cup butter at room temp
        • 1 1/2c powder sugar
        • 1 tbsp heavy cream
        • 1 tsp vanilla extract
        • 1/4c cocoa powder
        1. In mixer with whisk attachment, mix the room temperature butter and sugar on low speed until blended, then continue to whisk on medium speed for another couple of minutes.
        2. Add in the vanilla, cocoa powder, and heavy cream. Beat for another 2-3 minutes, add more cream or sugar for desired consistency.

        Instructions

        1. Preheat oven to 374
        2. Roll sugar cookie dough into 1″ balls 1″. Place into mini muffin tin, press down into center of the dough so there is a crater in the center
        3. Bake for 9 minutes or until cooked, cookie cups will be slightly golden in color and filled in, in the center. Using spoon press down the center to create a cup shape. Let cool in the pan for 5 mins then remove onto a wire cooling rack.
        4. once cool, fill the cookie cups with the caramel topping, then top with milk chocolate frosting. Add caramel to the top as desired.
        5. Store in air tight container at room temperature.

You had a busy week & had great mileage! I’m hoping to get some baking done this afternoon (after I finish the blogging stuff). I need to consider the Cleveland races! I’ve never been there & need to find sone new races.

I have suggested baking cutout cookies a few times this past week and my kids are actually being lazy and telling me to put it off, we can do it later. What?? Mom wants some cookies 🙂 Thankfully I have a nice advent calendar for my daily chocolate treats. Congrats on the race ambassador gig again!

Thank you!! You should come into town to run it one year! It’s a few weeks after Toledo.
