January Is…

What are your thoughts about January? Our January so far has been cold, snowy, icy, and not my favorite. In fact, it’s supposed to be in the negatives next week, which is also not my favorite:

Now, don’t get me wrong – there are some good things about January. And one of them is that it’s my birthday month! But I admittedly don’t love a January birthday. In my experience, nobody wants to celebrate it. It’s too cold, they’re on a diet (food diet, spending money diet, drinking diet, etc.) for the new year, etc. In fact, I saw 2 funny Instagram reels the other day that summed up how I feel about having a January birthday …

These made me laugh – at least I’m not the only one who is feeling this way! So here we are, on January 43rd (doesn’t it feel like that?!) … but with that, here’s how the week went:

Sunday: 9 treadmill miles –  This was an EARLY morning! We had to leave the house around 7:45 to be at FW’s back-to-back games (futsal, futsal and then basketball), and since we wouldn’t be home until around 3 after the games and had dinner at 5, I knew if I wanted to do a long run, I would need to get up early. So I set my alarm for 5 a.m. and got on the treadmill for a 9 mile run. Would I have preferred to run outside? Yes. But we had gotten several inches of snow overnight and my hip was a little cranky from running on the snow the few days prior with my Yaktracks and I didn’t want to take any chances. Running on the snow is such a good workout (it’s like running on sand!), but the uneven surface wasn’t so great for my hip after a few days in a row. I am proud to have gotten in my 9 miles on the treadmill (longest treadmill run in a while!) before our busy day.

Monday: 3.4 treadmill, 13 minutes indoor bike, run plus chest and tri workout – I had an early day at work, but wanted to get in a run before the day started. I kept it short after Sunday’s longer treadmill run, and also got in my chest and tricep workout and indoor cycling.

Tuesday: 4.1 mile treadmill run, 25 minutes on the bike, back and bicep strength training, core workout and .8 miles walking – I got in my weight workout, core workout, and then a short indoor bike ride while playing Duolingo. Then, it was time for the treadmill. I had stayed too long in bed and only had time for 3.1 miles before I had to (running late) run to shower/get the kids up/get ready. Luckily I was able to fit in 1 more mile or running and .8 miles of walking between school bus drop off and my work started to round out my workout.

Wednesday: 19 minutes indoor cycling, core workout, shoulder workout, starting leg workout, 3.25 mile run – I was feeling tired and stayed on the bike longer than I would’ve liked, so I didn’t have as much time as I would’ve liked to run. But I got it done!

Thursday: 4.78 mile treadmill run/walk total, 20 minutes cycling, shortened leg workout, core workout – My body was TIRED. I had been up late a few nights in a row (and still setting my alarm for 4:20), I ended up staying in bed waaay too long. After my cycling and weight training, I only had time for a short treadmill run. Luckily after the kids were off to school I was able to get in a few more miles walking/running but just wasn’t feeling up to it. My legs were tired, body was tired and overall, I wasn’t feeling good. I know I need more sleep, and hopefully will catch up soon!

I woke up to my watch telling me I hadn’t gotten enough sleep, my body wasn’t ready to work out and that I should take a rest day, LOL

Friday: 4.02 mile treadmill run, 30 minutes indoor cycling, 1.6 mile walk – I kept it easy on the bike, but then decided to hop on the treadmill. I kept it “short” as my legs were a little sore from leg day and I wanted to make sure it was just that – soreness. I then got in my first outdoor walk in forever! It was a balmy 30 degrees and sunny at lunchtime, which was great for my mood!

Saturday: 5.62 treadmill miles plus 1 mile walk, then part of my chest and tri workout – Another Saturday morning starting with kids sports at 7:45 a.m., and more snow (and rain!), so I hopped on the treadmill for a run. I only had time for 4.62 miles before we had to get LM to her game. While B took the boys to futsal, with skating being cancelled, I had time to get on the treadmill for another mile run, plus a mile walk, while LM did some art work in the same room. My hip was feeling good the whole time! I finished with some of my weight-training workout for next week. We won’t be around all next week in the mornings so I figured I’d start the workouts early.

Total:  34.54 miles running and plenty of weight training.

  • Any January (or winter) birthdays?
  • How often do you take rest days?

Nice job getting all your runs in–what a busy week! I’m not a fan of January either, especially with this impending polar vortex type cold that’s coming today. I’m still trying to decide if I should run outside early before the winds pick up. Sigh…

    Stay warm!

I hadn’t thought of those downsides to January birthdays! Hopefully your friends will make exceptions for you!

Nice going on all those tread runs — glad your hip isn’t complaining — that’s some good news for January!

Nice job fitting in your workouts around such a busy kids’ schedule.

Those two Instagram videos are hilarious. I don’t like my mid-November birthday, but understand January would be tougher. My friend’s daughter’s birthday is on December 26th so they always have her bigger celebration/parties on her half-birthday on June 26th.

Our January is usually not so bad but it is this year! We have had crappy weather for sure. Way to get things done this week!

I’m not a fan of January either, and our weather is actually nice. I just feel so blah after the holidays. I can see how a January birthday would be a little bit of a bummer. OR, you could celebrate in a big way and make it a highlight of the month?

I see you didn’t take your Garmin’s advice, ha ha. Nice job getting all those workouts in- but I hope you got more sleep this weekend!

Way to go on the 9 miles on the treadmill, and early! Commitment!

The snowy runs are QUITE the workout. And I think the Yaktraks always kind of messed with my form too.

So far I am hating January – cold, windy and now snow… makes this runner very grumpy as I don’t own a treadmill.

Hopefully I can run in the road but it’s supposed to be sooo cold this week…

Good for you on getting your miles in.

Two rest days work best for my race training plan, but elliptical or just walking are fine for a rest day! Your kids keep you very busy so I doubt a day off running is not a rest day for you 🙂
