In case the title didn’t give it away, this week was my birthday! I celebrated my birthday Thursday with a quick trip away with just B! It was the first time we had gone away since the 3 kids were born, and our first actual trip away on a plane (not just a short drive away/staycation), just the 2 of us, since FW was born. Our last trip like that was in May 2016 when I was pregnant with FW.
Anyway, I’m getting ahead of myself as usual. But that trip, combined with the long weekend plus schools being closed Tuesday and Wednesday due to frigid temps made it a very out-of-routine, but a wonderful, week.
Here’s how it looked:
Sunday: 8 treadmill miles, plus chest and start of shoulder workout – This was the first Sunday in ages that we somehow didn’t have any games Sunday, so I had a leisurely morning and slept in until 7! I wasnt feeling this run and almost called it at 5 miles. I stopped, walked and then decided to start I again to get to 7 … and then kept it up to 8. I also got in some weight training later in the day.
Monday: 5.25 treadmill run plus finished shoulder and leg workout and started back/bicep workout- LM was feeling sick overnight, and I was the one that was I with her, so I did not get much sleep at all. I was luckily able to take a nap at around 7 a.m. for 45 minutes, and then hopped on the treadmill. All the kids were home from school, so I was lucky to get in a weight training workout while they played in the basement.
Tuesday: 5 mile treadmill run, 30 minutes on the bike, plus finished back and bicep workout, leg workout and .75 mile walk – I got in my weight workout and decided not to run on the snow again and hit the treadmill. This was a tough run for me mentally and physically. My body was tired and I had to stop at 3 miles before keeping it up to get to (only) 4. How did I run more than double this on Sunday?! I also noticed later in the day my hip started acting up and feeling cranky. Perhaps my no days off since October, plus upping my weights on my lunges was too much?
Wednesday: 3.1 EARLY treadmill run and push ups before flying to Fort Lauderdale! Then 4.25+ miles walking in Fort Lauderdale – My alarm went off EARLY Wednesday morning – 2:35 a.m. to be exact! After only 4ish hours of sleep, I wasn’t excited about getting out of bed, but knew I’d be a happier person mentally if I got in a short run before my day. B and I had stayed in a hotel and luckily the gym was open 24/7, so I was able to get in a 30 minute run before showering and heading to the airport for our adventure! Unfortunately, our flight was delayed 5+ hours because of the freezing temperatures — it was -2 on our way to the airport, and when we got to our gate and it was time to board they informed us that the “waste line was frozen.” They ended up not being able to fix it so they found us a new plane – which then was too cold and then they couldn’t get enough water on the plane again, because “too cold – everything is frozen.” Five hours later, we made it on board and to our trip! We had plans to get massages in Fort Lauderdale but we missed the reservation because of the plane delay (we were supposed to get in at 9 am and had 2 pm massages – never would’ve thought we would have landed at 2!). So, B and I checked in and took a walk. It was 60s and rainy, but we ended up walking to a cute downtown area and found a place for a glass of wine and then dinner.

Not sad to leave these freezing temps!

Oysters and 50 degrees – much better 🙂
Thursday: BIRTHDAY RUN AND LIFT! 6.25 mile run, plus back and bicep workout – happy birthday to ME! I woke up to 50 degrees and drizzly temps, but after the rain stopped for a bit, B treated me to a birthday run! B and I don’t run together any more so this really was a treat. He planned a 4 mile course that took us through a state park and along the beach, which was beautiful! We saw some amazing trees and of course, the ocean! After B finished (I’m still impressed he could just get out and run 4 miles without any issues after not running in forever), I decided to do a few more by myself along the beach. After the run, B asked if I wanted to check out the hotel gym so we both did a back and bicep workout. I don’t think B and I have lifted weights together since before kids, so it really was a treat to work out with him.

How cool are these trees in the park?

Later in the day we walked around, got lunch and made it to our rescheduled massage appointments. The afternoon included some relaxing before heading out to dinner. Walking, weights, running and being outdoors? While it wasn’t the 70-80 degree weather usually in southern Florida at this time, it was great to escape the negative, freezing and snowy weather in Cleveland. Plus, I got in my first outdoor run in about 20 days — the streets around me have been just too icy/slippery for my liking so I’ve played it safe and my last outdoor run was January 4!
Friday: 4.06 mile run – We unfortunately were flying back to Cleveland and wanted to leave our hotel around 8:30 a.m., so I set an alarm to go running outside. It ended up being 40 degrees outside, so I wore my short-sleeved shirt, a long sleeve over it and shorts. It was cooler than I anticipated but still amazing to run outside along the beach and in shorts in January! After I saw my first mile was going to be close to a sub-9 minute/mile pace, I decided to see if I could keep it up for 4 miles – and I did! 40s are my favorite running temperature and my body was enjoying the flat, fast running.
Saturday: 5 miles treadmill – We had another crazy day of basketball, skating, more basketball, a birthday party and an engagement party, so again, I set my alarm for an early treadmill day. I got in my run and then it was off to the day!
Total: 35.66 miles running and weight training.
- Any travel planned for you?
- Was it SO COLD for you this week?
I am linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down.

I see the word treadmill a lot in your post. lol. Yes it was freezing here. All week. I go to Florida soon too. They are complaining about how cold it is. But I know it will be warmer than here. happy birthday. Glad you got away to celebrate

Happy birthday! How frustrating about the flight. Aren’t they used to freezing temps there? We got the US cold snap in the form of a nasty storm.
How lovely for you to lift weights with your partner again! Exploring hotel gyms can be so much fun (even if some can be very poorly equipped). Before flying home from Sweden last year we celebrated our wedding anniversary in a hotel gym. 😀
Happy birthday!!! How fun to get away, even if it was cooler than normal. At least it was warmer than here! It’s supposed to be warmer this week, so maybe you’ll get outside again.
Happy birthday! Nice that you took a trip to celebrate, even if the travel wasn’t 100% smooth!
Those trees are very cool.
happy birthday! So glad you got to get away alone for a few days even if the weather did not cooperate.

Happy birthday!
Those are my old stomping grounds! I’m sorry about all the plane delays and that the weather wasn’t better for you, but I’m sure it was still warmer than where you are.
So glad you had a chance to celebrate with your hubby!

Oh wow- you came down to South Florida!!! It was interesting to hear your perspective- we thought the weather was terrible and you were just happy to be out of the freezing cold.
Birch State Park! Fun fact- that’s where my husband and I got married (25 years ago.)
Happy Birthday!
What a beautiful place for a wedding!! What a small world, indeed.
Truth be told, I was pretty grumpy it wasn’t sunny or 70s as I had envisioned for my first getaway, but I tried to make the most of it 🙂 My husband even went swimming outside when it was in the 40s one morning!
Happy Birthday Melissa! Sounds like a fun getaway despite the cold weather and flight delays. I’m glad you were able to reschedule the massages. I have two trips coming up this month: To Blacksburg VA to visit our college daughter and to Atlanta to visit our older daughter. I am looking forward to both!
Wishing you continued happy birthday fun! Sounds like the perfect getaway!
Happy belated birthday, Melissa! How fun to celebrate it with a little getaway with just you and your husband. Glad you were able to reschedule your massages – I’m sure you were looking forward to those. We’re in Florida now in the Miami area. It was quite cool when we arrived last Thursday in Ocala, but it warmed up nicely while we were in Naples. We’d planned to come down a week earlier, but moved it back a week due to a work conflict – so glad we did!
What a great way to celebrate your birthday! I guess it was a good thing that you had a backup plan (the gym!) when the flight got delayed. My husband has that same Cleveland marathon shirt and he wears it all the time 🙂
I am en route to Colorado right now for an extended ski trip. Woohoo!!
Happy birthday!!! What a wonderful getaway, what fun to run and lift together 🙂 Sounds so lovely.
