The last week of daylight

Here we go again – another week without running every day! Is it easy for me to do? Not at all. Am I still getting up to work out? You betcha, but my workouts are just weights and some walking right now. Kinda boring? A little, but since the weather is still nice out, I’ve been enjoying being outside for a walk in the morning. Especially since is the last week before school starts and thus the last week of working out in the morning, during the daylight!

With my time off, here is what the full week looked like:

Sunday: 5.14 mile outdoor walk, finished back and bicep workout, started leg workout

Instead of getting in a long Sunday run, I got in a long(ish) walk and some weights. Was it the same? no … but it was nice out and I enjoyed some time to myself while listening to my audiobook. I am currently reading a book called Havoc and also listening to it, so it was nice to make some progress while walking.

Monday: 3.69 mile walk, core workout, finished leg day, 1 mile treadmill walk on incline

I focused on finishing my leg day workouts, and then got in a quick walk before heading into the office. My hip felt okay and I did do a little bit of jogging among the walking, but only for a few minutes ust to see how it felt or if I wanted to pass someone who was walking. Overall, the hip felt good but I didn’t want to push it. That night, I also got in a short treadmill walk B picked up FW from practice and took the little kids to play on the playground for the last few minutes.

Tuesday: 4.15 mile walk, core workout

I kept with the theme of playing it safe this week and enjoyed a walk outside as the sun rose. It was a beautiful morning, and I wasn’t going to let it go to waste by not getting in some movement! I got in a nice core workout first before heading outside. Again, I tried to jog a few times just to see how the hip was feeling, but never for more than a minute or so.

Wednesday: 5.23 mile/walk run outside, weighted core workout, push ups, .8 mile treadmill walk

Another day, another walk outside. I put in some running intervals today, a little more than yesterday, and I noticed I was feeling it afterward, unfortunately. I wasn’t hurting, but I could feel my hip when I moved if that makes sense? I also got in a core workout.

Thursday: 5.25 mile walk outside, core workout, push ups, 1.5 mile walk on the treadmill and chest+tricep workout, .5 mile walk outside at night

Instead of a walk/run in the morning, I opted to get in a core workout and then just walk since my hip was feeling off on Wednesday. It was still nice to get in a longer walk while the sun was rising. Since I was working from home, I got in a short weight workout and treadmill walk at lunchtime. I was excited to move from 15 lb to 20 lb on some of my chest exercises — not sure if that’s because it was lunchtime and not the morning when my body is tired, or because after 1 year, I’m getting stronger!

Friday: shoulder and leg workout, 4 mile outdoor walk, push ups and crunches

For the first time in ages, my arms were sore when I woke up! It was a great feeling to know that moving up to 20 lb. made a difference for my chest workout. I stuck to 15 lb. for my shoulder workout, and then did a short core workout before heading outside for a sunrise walk.

Saturday: 3.4 mile treadmill walking on an incline, back/biceps, some abs + push ups

Well, there we are, a full week without walking. GM was home with me in the morning, so I put on Cars the movie and made him breakfast, and he watched the movie and played with his trains on and off while I worked out. After I turned the movie off, he even wanted to work out with me so he “lifted” weights and took off his shirt to do push ups.

Later that day we had FW’s first flag football game of the season, and a block party at my kids’ school. A nice combo of summer and fall in one day.

Total: Walking and weights this week – no running

  • When was the last time you went a full week without running?
  • Are your mornings getting darker during your workouts?

  1. It’s been a while since I’ve gone a whole week without running, but I have had to take some time off here and there because of my knee. I hate when I can’t run, but it doesn’t take long to get back into a groove again, even when I’ve been off. Your body will thank you!

Good luck this week with back to school!

  2. as Wendy said, taking a week off is good for your body. Professional athletes take weeks off between seasons and return stronger. Enjoy your last week before school starts! Kids are really growing up

  4. It’s good to give your body time to recover. And once you recover from your injury, be careful not to ramp you mileage back up too quickly. I know this from experience…

To answer your question, I’m going on two years of pretty much no running, but as you know, I’ve supplemented that with lots of cycling and walking to keep my cardiovascular system strong.

  5. It’s so hard to play it safe but I really think it will pay off for you!

I’m glad you are still able to get outside for a walk in the morning — I find that really helps get my day off to a good start!

  6. I hope the continued reprieve from running helps your hip to feel better! Have you tried cycling? That always seems to help my hips feel better, but all of our aches are different.

  7. i know- it’s hard not to run. But it will pay off in the long run. You’re reminding me that I really want to get out for more walks, since I am running but only 3-4 times a week. My hip is behaving for the most part, but I still feel it sometimes and walking makes it feel good.

I’ve heard good things about Havoc- I’ll be interested to hear how you like it!

  8. I couldn’t tell you the last time I did that. You’re doing the right thing and it will pay off.

It’s not too much darker yet and honestly, I don’t mind. It helps cut down on some of the heat.

  9. You are so smart to rest… runners are not good about that.

    Still you are so active.

Good reminder to get out and walk on rest days!
