I am trying so hard to get back to running!!! After taking most of the past month off and only walking and cycling (with the occasional short jog here and there), I decided this was the week to try to run! It was good and bad — I tried to run a little more each day, and felt relatively okay for the most part. On Saturday after my run I felt a little twinge, but hopefully next week this return to running won’t come back and haunt me!
Here’s what the week looked like:
Sunday: 2.09 miles “run” and then 4.51 mi walking outside
I had plans to sleep in, but FW was up at 6 and while he went back to bed, I had a hard time falling back to sleep, so I got in a 2 mile “run” (1 mile run, second mile walk/run) before hanging out with GM. I had plans to go for a walk with some friends, so I didn’t want to do too much activity using my hip, and it was nice to hang out/play/read with just GM. My walk with friends was at a local golf course that had turned into a park a few years ago and it was pretty! There were hawks, butterflies and lots of flowers on the path.
Monday: 9+ mi of walking! Leg workout, 3.1 mile walk with a little running in there, 3.43 mi walk before work/after big kids get on the bus, 2.15 mi walk at lunch, and 1.75 mi on the treadmill while working
I didn’t intend to get in so many miles, but it happened and I can’t complain. My legs were a little sore/tired in the morning after my short run on Sunday and so I took it relatively easy with just a few minutes of running within my 5K walk. The rest of my walks were just walking and mostly taking advantage of the beautiful weather – it was chilly (50s) in the morning but “feels like 80s” by lunch again!
Tuesday: 1.5 mile run outside, 2 mile walk outside, short core workout, 2.76 mi stroller walk with GM, 2.5 mi slow treadmill walking, 2 mile walk outside
I decided I wanted to test out the hip again, so this time I did a 1.5 mile slow run to kick off my morning. It didn’t hurt, but it didn’t feel 100% normal. So, the rest of the day just included walking. But it was a lot of walking — 9+ miles again!

Wednesday: 1.77 mi slow jog, core workout, ~2 mile stroller walk and 1.65 treadmill walk
I had a long morning meeting, and was glad to get in a little walking before a morning of sitting. My hip was feeling a little off after the slow jog (boo!), so after walking I took it easy most of the rest of the day.
Thursday: 15-minute core/glute workout, planks and pushups, chest and tricep workout; 2.2 mi jog, 1.1 mi treadmill walk, 2.21 stroller walk
I did a short core and glute workout video, hoping that would help strengthen my hip/problem spot, then decided to give the leg a test run. It felt okay — and I made it 2ish miles!
Friday: Shoulder and leg workout, planks+ push ups, 2.65 mile slow run, 2.63 mile stroller walk with GM, 2.27 mile lunch walk
We were back to our usual Friday morning routine – a walk with GM in the stroller to a nearby bakery after the big kids got picked up for school. I love it and don’t want the weather to turn and it to end! I also got in a slow run to start my day! I really wanted to go longer, but I’m trying to take it slow and steady and make sure I don’t overdo it. The weather was chilly and the 2.6 miles felt pretty good almost the whole way.

Saturday: back and bicep workout, 3.68 mile run/walk outdoors
Another busy Saturday — we had to leave the house by 7:30 for flag football, then I had to take FW to piano, while B took LM to a double header soccer games, and then I met them at soccer and B took FW to a flag football scrimmage … With all of that to do, I was glad to get in an early morning workout, even if it wasn’t long.

Total: 10ish miles running! Plus lots of walking and weights.
Today (Sunday): is a local 5K that I can walk to from my house, so I’m going to attempt to run/walk with FW. He wants to run/walk with a focus on the “walk,” so I may to bribe him to run a full mile before we walk much more.
Some questions for you:
- Is your Saturday (or other weekend day) crazy or do you have more relaxed weekends?
- Are you feeling like fall yet? It was back in the 70s/feels like 80s this week (with actual highs in the 80s this weekend), so not fall yet, and I LOVE IT! .
I am linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down.

I’m glad to see your return to running is going well. You’re smart to listen to your body! Fingers crossed you’ll be back to full miles soon.
My weekends are surprisingly busy, even without my kids at home anymore! I have yet to start my Mammoth Trail challenge because every weekend has something on the calendar.
Yay! Sounds like the hip is making a comeback. You actually got in a lot of miles running/walking and it seems to be doing fine. I think any niggles you feel now are just the hip adjusting to running again.
Good luck on the race today! I hope everything feels good. To answer your question, my weekends vary. It really depends on what my daughter has going on (she doesn’t have any regularly scheduled weekend activities) and I work Saturday mornings. This morning I’m also going into word for a few hours- then I’m hoping the rest of the day will be chill.
well it feels like fall in the morning! LOL glad you are starting to get back to running. Have you thought about easing back in a few days a week first before trying to run everyday? Might be easier on your hip. I am surprisingly busy without the kids at home anymore!

You hip awareness after running sounds like you’re pushing yourself to run too much to soon. I suggest that if you have that pain/awareness after a run to give yourself a week of recovery before trying again.
Our fall is getting here gradually… Our evenings are cool, but the days are still getting quite warm and often humid. I just hope it doesn’t go from very warm to cold.
It’s good to see you’re running again and that it’s going ok-ish. It’s good to get back to something we love doing… slowly and carefully though. I hope you find a good balance between running and walking until you’re fully recovered. I know it’s hard.
Good to see that you too have some great weather! I know how much you love summer! We’re easing into autumn and except the storm this week, we’re having some pleasant mild weather.
I’m loving the extended summer temps! They sure feel nice 🙂 I hope things keep improving with your hip.
We are having zero fall weather. None. It’s so cruel.
Right now, Saturdays are super busy. It’s Bandtober, which means we are all up and moving to get A to practice and then off to his competitions. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
I hope the 5K went well for you. I know you really miss running!! You are getting a lot of miles in with the walking though, and that’s impressive!
