Unexpected Rest Day

While I’m still recovering from my hip injury, I’m mostly taking it easy on my runs. But this week included an unplanned rest day on Friday — not related to anything with my body. Instead, my youngest was in the ER for an emergency appendectomy so we spent the day (and night before) at the hospital. Anyway, I digress – besides that, we had an uneventful week! And now we’re focused on recovery, and relaxing, enjoying some (hopefully) good fall weather.

Here’s what the week looked like:

Sunday: 6.28 run/walk

We were due for a rainy start to the week, so I wanted to take advantage of the dry and warm (70s) Sunday morning and get in a long run/walk. I did a lot of walking, but that’s okay – it felt good to get in some good miles outside!

Monday: Finished back workout, then started leg workout, plus 4.14 mile run/walk and ~ 4 miles walking outside

After Saturday’s 5K and Sunday’s “long run,” I took it easy. I ran one mile then walked/ran the rest. I also got in a few outdoor walks during the day, including with GM (to pick up some bread and bagels), which felt good to be outside and not having rain! It was chilly out though – much cooler than the 70s it was on Sunday morning!

Tuesday: Leg + core workout, 3.75 mile treadmill walk

After the race Saturday, 7 miler Sunday and run Monday, I opted to be boring play it safe, and stayed inside and walked on the treadmill. I finished my leg workout, did a core workout and got in a short walk on an incline. I had to be at work early, so I didn’t get in a walk with GM unfortunately. We did have time to read a book before I headed into the office, though! And it was a good thing we did stay inside – it started pouring somewhat unexpectedly when we’d usually be walking outside!

Wednesday: 4.16 mile run, .64 mile stroller walk outside, 1.7 mile treadmill walk, core and booty workout, chest and tricep workout

I didn’t run on Tuesday, did a half run/half walk Monday, and so I was eager to get out and se how running felt this morning. Woke up to very breezy and mid-40s – yikes! I am not ready for that coldness and I tried to convince myself that I didn’t need to run. I did a 10 minute core and “booty” workout (thinking it would be good for my hip), my planks and pushups, my chest and tricep workout … but yes, I did get out the door! And of course I was glad I had! It was windy but not too bad. I ran 2 miles without stopping, and then ran/walked (mostly running) the rest. I also got in 1.5 treadmill walking and a very short walk with GM after he finished breakfast.

That night was my other book club! This is one I’ve been in longer — we meet at people’s houses and this time I was hosting. I had picked the book, Circe – have you read it? It came out a while ago but has been on my list for some time — anyway, I really enjoyed it.

Thursday: 3.14 mile run, 1.75 mile treadmill walk with an incline, core and very little shoulder workout

I was feeling TIRED this morning! Because I had hosted my other book club at my house, up a little tired after being up late Wednesday – some of the girls didn’t leave until after 10:30 and by the time I cleaned up I wasn’t in bed until 11:30pm, which is late for me! I got out of bed and saw it was 40 degrees and supposed to start raining in 12 minutes, so I quickly left the house to get in hopefully 1 miles of running outside. I got in my mile and noticed it said the rain wasn’t coming for another 5 minutes so I kept going. Well, I kept it up for a full 5K and it didn’t start raining until I was inside! GM and I skipped our morning walk again, because it was 40 and rainy – not ideal stroller walking weather! That night it cleared up, so LM and I got in a little Halloween event at the high school my niece goes to.

Friday:  Unplanned rest day …

The kids had off school on Friday so I was EXCITED to sleep in, run outside and take advantage of not having to rush around everywhere. What’s that saying about making plans? Yeah … don’t do that!

Instead, Thursday, my 4 year old got sent home from daycare with a stomach bug – he had thrown up. After he got home around 4 p.m., he proceeded to throw up pretty much every 15 minutes – 1 hour. By 1 a.m., he had thrown up 14 times and was complaining of major stomach pain, and his throw up was a blueish shade. I had dozed off for a little bit when B woke me up asking if I thought we should take him into the ER. He was worried especially about the pain in his stomach, saying it could be appendicitis. I googled it and saw that appendicitis is really rare in four year olds (under 5 is very rate, most kids get it at 10+) AND I had given him blue Gatorade, so I wasn’t sure if that was the issue (now I know to stick to clear next time! woops), but I called the pediatrician after hours and they encouraged us to take him in. B took him in, while I stayed home while the big kids slept. Sure enough, B was right – appendicitis! Needless to say, with B sharing me updates every 15 minutes or so, and my anxiety, I didn’t get any sleep Thursday night, and Friday morning, I was anxiously awaiting the big kids to wake up so I could get to the hospital to see GM. A workout, my usual sense of normalcy, was tossed out the window. The day went spent in the hospital with GM, who got his appendix taken out around 8 a.m. and somehow he got discharged at around 5 p.m.! He is still recovering, sore and tired, but we are grateful he is home and on the mend. So yeah, I spent the day in the hospital, got home a little after 5 p.m., made the kids dinner and then we headed out to a school event LM had from 6-8:30 p.m. I was tired!

Saturday: 5.58 mile walk/run, finished shoulder and leg workout

After little sleep Wed. night and NO sleep Thurs. night, I was pooped and passed out Friday at 10 p.m. GM woke up a few times over the night, and Saturday I was pretty tired. I still made it out the door for a run/walk for my mental health mostly. Later that day, I was dying for a nap, but I ended up getting in a short weight workout instead — I finished the shoulder and leg workout I had started on Thursday.

Total: 24ish miles running (with walking)! Plus weights.

Some questions for you:

  • Have you or anyone in your family had their appendix out?
  • Any Halloween/fall events this week?

I am linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down.

  1. Oh wow!!! My mom had her appendix taken out. I’m glad GM is doing well and that was taken care of so fast. My daughter thought she might have an appendicitis a few years back and we went to the ER. Luckily her college apartment is close by and we met at the ER. As it turns out she just needed to go to the bathroom 😂 And now we know how much it costs to go to the ER on our insurance (a LOT!). Speedy recovery to your son!

  2. oh wow your poor little guy! Glad you all caught this and got him into surgery. Hope he is on the mend and so are the parents.

  3. oh wow your poor little guy! Glad you all caught this and got him into surgery. Hope he is on the mend and so are the parents.

  4. Oh, wow, an emergency appendectomy is quite big news! I’m glad he’s OK. The only emergency surgeries my kids had were for broken bones (my son) and my daughter swallowed a penny that got stuck in her throat.

  5. It’s so good to hear that your little guy is on the road to recovery. I learned in February when mine ruptured at the age of 67 that 10 to 30 years of age is the typical range for people to experience appendicitis.

Without little kids, I’m not really aware of the Halloween events going on in our community.

  6. ACK! I’m sad for you that you didn’t get in your lovely day on Friday as planned, but obviously the important thing is that your son is okay! That must have been so scary. And, you must be exhausted. I don’t know how you do everything you do on so little sleep.

Glad your hip is feeling better- I hope this week has no big surprises for you!!!

  7. Sorry to hear about the ER and surgery for your little guy! There is ZERO family history of that in my family, so I’m hoping that holds for myself and kids. Halloween…I didn’t realize it was Beggers’ Night last night until I left to go for a walk, LOL. I wondered why there were SO MANY cars parked everywhere until I saw all the kids (and parents) in costumes while walking. My bad!

  8. Glad he’s on the mend. I saw your IG story and was concerned. How scary for all of you

There were kids today in costume on my run which was weird. But Halloween has changed since we were kids

  9. Awww, I’m so sorry your little guy had appendicitis. Glad you took him in early, so that there were no complications. He’ll be back to himself in no time. I had my appendix taken out when I was in my 20s.
