Coldest Since 1899

Coldest Since 1899

We did it! We survived the coldest stretch in Cleveland since 1899. Yes, I read recently that the last time there were this many days in a row (8+) daytime highs at or below 17 degrees ever observed in Cleveland was 1899. So 127 years later – we tied with the record. I imagine life 127 years ago in this cold was a little different – probably less heat, and less people living their regular lives as usual … I imagine in the 1800s people were more likely to hunker and slow down in the cold? But I digress – we survived the FREEZE and even had 2 days of warm weather this week, including a 50+ degree day!

That said, while I didn’t make it outside to run either “warm” day, I did finally get outside on Saturday morning! We still have so much snow that the snow started melting and now our sidewalks are extremely covered with ice, which I didn’t feel like dealing with in the pitch black morning. So yeah, while I stayed inside during the weekdays, I DID make it outside for 2 walks, which hadn’t happened in a while and a weekend run! So, the week included lots of treadmill time, some weights and really, just a lot of time indoors. FW also tested positive for Flu B, so he was home sick for a few days. Luckily, he seems to be recovered by now!

So a little sickness, a little running, and a little walking – here’s what the week looked like:

Sunday: 9.1 treadmill miles

After taking Saturday off during our trip to Hocking Hills, I was really looking forward to getting in a longer run. I ended up splitting it into 2 due to children – I started with 5 miles on the treadmill, then went to check on kids and get them breakfast, then finished 4.1 miles for 9.1 total. FW wasn’t feeling well, so I wanted to make sure he got in some sleep, but also wanted to check on him.

Monday: 4.1 m treadmill run, back and bicep workout, leg workout, 1.5 m treadmill walk with the weighted vest, 2ish mile walk at lunch

My legs were a little tired, but I got in 2 slow miles, did my weights/leg workout, and then had time or 2.1 more running. I also got in some treadmill walking. Later, it was SUNNY out (albeit 20 degrees), so I was excited to get a lunchtime walk!

Tuesday: 5 mi treadmill run, 1.5 treadmill walk with the weighted vest, chest and tricep workout, 2.8 mile outdoor walk at lunch

I had a hard time getting out of bed, but after I got my weight workout in and hopped on the treadmill, I was feeling good! I was able to fit in 5 miles before having to start our day. Oh, and FW was home with me – as I mentioned, we found out that he had the FLU! He tested positive for flu B, which has been going around the school, especially his basketball team. Luckily, we caught it early and got him on Tamiflu, which I think made a big difference. He was feeling so much better and it was WARM (nearly 50 degrees!) so we took a lunchtime walk. We ended up crossing a stream and it was all frozen over so we walked for a bit on the stream, which was a lot of fun!

Loving the ice, and feeling a lot better

Wednesday: 4.6 mile treadmill run, 2 mile treadmill walk with weighted vest, 20 minute stretch and bodyweight strength workout, 2.5 treadmill mile walk

I tried something new Wednesday morning – a 20 minute stretching and bodyweight strength workout, which was fun. A little slower start to my morning, but then hopped on the treadmill. I don’t stretch often so it was good to get in some of that before my body tightened up during the day.

Thursday: 3.1 mile treadmill run/walk, 2.5 mile treadmill walk on an incline with weighted vest, shoulder and leg workout

I was dragging! I woke up and got out of bed fine but ended up starting the workout late. I did my weights, and then didn’t have time for a longer run .. and then my legs didn’t want to move! I got in a 5K but alternated walking and running to give my legs and feet a little rest. I didn’t get in any lunchtime workouts/walks, because the kids had a half day of school, so lunchtime was picking them up, a quick grocery run and then lunch.

That night was a school Mom’s Night Out event – it was a bouquet-making Galentine’s at a local wine bar.

Friday: 5 miles on the treadmill and .75 mile treadmill walk and .85 mile walk with kids at lunch

NO SCHOOL for the big kids so I was excited to sleep in … but GM had other plans, he woke up at 5:15 and wouldn’t go back to sleep. I finally brought him downstairs withme and after feeding him breakfast it was still too early to go to school, so he went into the basement with me while i did some weights and then hopped on the treadmill. Then, he was ready for school – luckily he was excited for school and his Valentine’s party. At lunch time, it was 33 degrees and sunny, so I got in a walk with the big kids. It was a short walk, but vitamin D therapy is everything!

Saturday: 5.03 miles … OUTSIDE!

We didn’t have to head out for sports into 11 a.m., so I was ecstatic to run during daylight and outside! The sidewalks were all iced over, so I played it safe and stuck to side streets and ran in the street, but it was great to be outdoors.

Total: 35.93 miles running, plus some walking and weights

Some questions for you:

  • What it your longest indoor running streak? It’s hard to be sure but I think this is my longest. I haven’t run outside since January 12 – more than a month!
  • Did you have false spring near you too this week?

I haven’t run outside in ages. I really hope to be able to run outside tomorrow — I need the rain to wash some lingering icy spots away, and rinse the salt off the street to save Scooby’s paws.

Glad the flu didn’t last too long and (hopefully) didn’t make the rounds.

we also had our coldest winter in ages and I am not a fan at all! Glad your son is feeling better. We are hoping for a lot of melting today to get our sidewalks back. Navigating them has been rough

Getting outside to soak in the sun and fresh air sure does make a difference! I’m glad you were able to enjoy it. Yay on Tamiflu helping out your son – and yay the flu didn’t get passed around the family! Hopefully it stays away for good.

We’ve had the fake spring gig for the past two weeks in Iowa, LOL. I’ve been loving every minute of it 😉 Great job with all your workouts; you’re really rocking the strength training!

Wow, you had kids at home for a lot of the week! Why did the big kids have no school on Friday? Glad your son is feeling better (and fingers crossed that no one else in the family gets sick…)

As usual you had a great week of workouts, battling cold, ice, and sick kids- somehow you still manage to get it all in!

That’s not a fun weather streak to have! I’ve kind of forgotten about the weather at home because we’ve had such beautiful days here in Florida!

Glad your son is feeling better and no one else in the family got the flu from him.

Oh, isn’t it nice to get outdoors after a long time stuck inside? Getting some real daylight and fresh air is such a treat. You’re doing such a good job getting it all done with treadmills and weights and weighted vests though! You’re such an inspiration!

I guess we got our false spring around the first week of February, now it’s windy and it’s been cold and miserable. Hopefully it will improve… we’ll see.

It sure was nice to get outside, wasn’t it? I try to get outside, even in the cold, but my early runs-the dark and the cold-are just too much right now. Nice job getting your miles in despite some glitches!

I’m glad no one else got sick at your house. We’re seeing flu B right now, but we’re actually most seeing norovirus–ick!
