WIAW: Sick Day Eats

I wish I had a more exciting WIAW Wednesday post to share. You know, a post that includes peanut butter cheesecake cookie dough blondies (yes these exist), homemade granola, this gnocchi and sausage soup and more of what I’m craving as I type this.

But alas, I had a sick day Monday. I woke up with a fever and achy. No stomach issues (I rarely get stomach sick), but super tired, feverish, a bad headache and sore. So what do I eat when I’m not feeling well? Here’s a sneak peek in today’s WIAW!

For some reason egg whites and veggies didn’t sound like they would hit the spot in the morning, so I opted for a pretty large bowl of Special K that took me about an hour to eat. It was probably close to two servings, so maybe that’s why it took so long? Oh, and yes – I eat it dry. I don’t like milk in my cereal.

I swear I didn't eat the whole box ..

I slept through lunch so I had a snack around 3 p.m. I started with some peanut butter and half a sweet potato with some caramels. I ran out of the homemade ones so had a few (more than just the one pictured – I had 3) ones from my cabinet.

Then an hour later I had another half of sweet potato with honey and cinnamon. Still my favorite snack.

B said he’d make me dinner and I napped again throughout the evening until dinner at around 8 p.m. B made some veggie burgers (my favorite – Luna!) and salads which somehow hit the spot. Oh, and yes, I also had some Arctic Zero. About 1/3 a pint #notashamed

So that was it! That’s what I ate on my sick day. Apparently I’m still hungry AND I crave comfort food as you can see – gotta have my ice cream, caramels, peanut butter, honey and sweet potato on my sick days!

Some questions for you:

  • What do you eat when you’re not feeling well? Do you tend to not eat much?
  • What comfort foods do you crave when you’re ill?
  • Favorite flavor of Arctic Zero? I’m almost done and need more!

PS – Thanks to The Big Man’s World for hosting this week’s WIAW!

sweet potatoes and veggie burgers, yum. i don’t like caramel at all (i know, i know, i’m not really a girl it seems, as i’m the only one i know who doesn’t!) and i can’t get into Arctic Zero. when i’m sick, hmmm…i guess i just eat the stuff i normally eat, or else if i’m asleep all day, not much at all? i never want dairy when i’m sick…usually bananas and almond butter and chicken, i think. i rarely get sick so i can’t remember. feel better!

Ha, that’s okay – I don’t like chocolate ice cream, mac & cheese or burgers – foods that always amaze people 🙂 Arctic Zero has its time and place in my life. Basically when I want something comforting and soft. It’s by no means replacement of normal ice cream for me!

I also don’t like Mac and cheese or burgers!

Been wanting to try Luna burgers forever! So hard to find a good veggie burger.

I love them! They’re not as good as homemade but they’re close. So much better than other brands (Boca, morningstar) in my opinion.

I’ve been massively craving sweet potatoes lately – you just reminded me I need to get some! Looks like the kind of eats I crave when I’m sick to – carbs and sugar all the way!

Ohh I’ve never heard of Luna burgers! I’ll have to check those out 🙂 My current favorites are Hilary’s Eat Well veggie burgers. SO good!

Ooh I’m always looking for a new veggie burger! Where do you get those?

I second Liz’s favorite, Hilary’s burgers are so good, and much cleaner than a lot of other burgers out there! Check your local stores frozen section next to the other veggie burgers!

UGH I was sick last week, and it was absolute hell.

You do pretty good when you’re sick! I usually don’t eat much– I love to have chicken noodle soup, crackers, sprite….my husband will buy me popsicles {his favorite sick food} and sometimes I’ll have that. How do you like that ice cream? It looks interesting.

I’m a fan of Arctic Zero for specific purposes. I don’t consider it ice cream – it’s a treat for when i want something cold and soothing or just to nosh on. It’s no way as rich or fulfilling as ice cream – but then again, you can “eat the whole pint” of Arctic Zero 🙂

Ick… when I’m sick all I’m interested in is super bland and basically nutritionally devoid foods. I’m sure it doesn’t help me get better any faster but it’s all I can take.
    Hope you’re feeling better!

I like dry cereal too! My favorite is cinnamon Life 🙂 I ate a lot of saltines and fruit last week when I had the stomach bug.

Oooh cinnamon Life! I haven’t had that in years. That’s a great dry cereal!

Ugh. Being sick sucks. I hope you’re already feeling a bit better.
What I eat on sick days depends on how unwell I’m feeling, if my throat is sore and a number of factors I can’t point out. <- weird, I know.
I will say, though, that ice cream is pretty good on those days. Anything frozen or smooth and creamy that soothes the throat.

Definitely feeling better – thanks. Thanks for stopping by 🙂

So sorry to hear you were sick -sometimes by body gets a little funky as the weather changes. If I have flu-ish symptoms or tummy issues I usually stick to the “BRAT” diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast) or things that are either neutral or on the sweeter/carbier side.

    1. Melissa (I Crashed the Web) Avatar

Thanks! I’ll have to try the BRAT diet sometime. Though I didn’t have any stomach issues, thus the ability to eat (and crave) semi normal foods.
