I admit that I’ve been slacking in the racing/training area. Why? I am blaming it on the baby.

Getting little sleep at night and only 3-4 hours of uninterrupted sleep (sometimes less…sometimes more?) at a time and often less than 7 hours of sleep total at night has played its toll. And my free time is much more limited. Between work, existing after-work activities (work events, book club, board meetings and events, my lovely ladies craft beer society), and life – running is not always a priority.

I’m not going to lie – I still run multiple times a week. But I’ve been enjoying NOT training for anything and just enjoying my sleepy runs when I get them in! Anyway – that’s why I’ve decided that I’M GOING TO RUN THE HALF MARATHON. And you should join me! If you’re planning on getting in shape or being more active in 2017, here’s your chance – you can win entry to any one of the Cleveland Marathon races!

What’s so great about the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon – and why register?

The history: The Cleveland Marathon is one of the 50 oldest marathons in the country – while I’m sure the course (and scenery) has changed throughout the years, it’s great to run in a race that you know has so much history. And this year is its 40th anniversary!!

The course! I’ve only run the half and the 10k, but in my opinion, it’s a good view. Cleveland is a city of many neighborhoods and running the race (half, full and 10K) allows you to get a glimpse at some of these. The course is relatively flat and offers a variety of scenes. I also personally love races where I can be in an urban environment, so I’m biased and love that this offers that. (Disclaimer: the only part of the race I don’t like is the end. The dreaded shoreway. It’s hot (or freezing – like last year!) and long and boring and hilly!)

The fans! Just as our neighborhoods are diverse, so are the spectators – but they’re cheering you on, excited to see you, holding signs, water, snacks and even beer for the runners. Even last year when it was SLEETING there ended up still being some people out to cheer us on. 20160515_082336_001

The challenge series! Last year I was pregnant so I did the 5k/10k series. It’s fun to do a two-day event and also get a special medal. I’m leaning toward the 8k/half marathon this year! The 5k and 8k run at Edgewater Park on the near west side of downtown so you can get in some beach AND downtown views!

Here’s how to enter to win the GIVEAWAY – these are all worthy of separate entries so – please leave a separate comment for each way you choose to participate!

  1. Leave a comment on this post. You can explain why you want to run the race OR if you’ve run before, your favorite part of the race. OR just tell me your favorite running mantra. What keeps you going?

  1. I love the Cleveland Marathon, its usually right around my birthday and is a great way for me to celebrate…Doing something I love! Last year it landed on my birthday, the weather was a huge bust!!!

  2. I’ve run the past 2 years – half and 10k and in spite of “some” weather issues I always have fun! The spectators and other runners are always great! And coming in to the finish and heating John on his drum is amazing! I want to run again this year for the anniversary, love anniversary races!! Plus the course is changing again and I can’t wait to see what they do!

  3. Just this weekend I started getting back into running and during this morning’s run I thought “huh maybe I should do a marathon this year?” And so now I just might 🙂

  4. I ran the half last year & PR’d even with that freaky weather! I loved everything-the course, the crowds, everything! I would love to run it again this year on the race ‘s Anniversary!

  5. The Cleveland Half was my first Half Marathon in 2014 and needless to say, I LOVED it! I came back in 2016, where I completed the half again but this time it was my 11th. Last year was one-of-a-kind..with the rain/sleet/snow/sunshine combo it was definitely one to remember. After last year’s half, I actually came down with Walking Pneumonia but I have no hard feelings for Cleveland :). I have been training for a the 20 Mile Drop at the end of April so I’ll be ready to take my hard work to Cleveland again for the Full Marathon!! If I get this chance, I’ll let Cleveland redeem itself!

I also follow you on Instagram 🙂 If I had a twitter, I would follow you there too!

  6. I need revenge on this course!!! 🙂 I ran the full a few years ago and the course beat me but I NEED another change to beat IT and show my sons I never give up!!! Please consider me! Thanks 🙂

  7. I just started running last February and completed my first 5k this past September. With 3 kids funds & time for running are tight. I want to run the 10K at the Cleveland marathon. Signing up for something always forces me to make the time to prepare, and a free entry would motivate me to earn it, since others have to pay. Sorry I can’t follow you in Instagram or Twitter, Facebook is enough of a time suck for me right now. 😜

  8. Hey Kim, you are so inspiring! I realllly want to run the Cleveland Marathon this year because signing up for races is a commitment that motivates me to keep running, in this case, I need to get back to training again!

  9. Oh, I get a seperate entry for following you both seperately so count this entry for me following Cleveland Marathon on Twitter please. Are we only allowed a total of 4?

(Yes, that’s me being desperate 😉

  10. Oh, this race is on my radar (and bucket list), but 2017 is not ideal with my schedule…I have “stuff” happening every weekend from April 29 until June 3…..except for this particular weekend LOL But, it’s too far of a commute for me to swing it in the midst of all the craziness ;-( Congrats on the little bundle of joy 😉

  11. I would love to win this. I’ve never run anything in Ohio before so it would be a great adventure. I’m running 6 other halves this year and I don’t have anything planned for May so I feel like it’s meant to be 😉

  12. My favorite reason to run in Cleveland is that it reminds me of how hard I worked to finish my first marathon there. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done.

  13. I want to gift this race entry to my selfless husband. He does so much for me, so I want to give this to him. And he LOVES running.

  14. Only commenting because I TOTALLY missed the boat on this – this tab was open all week and I intended to enter, and I blew it. Guess I have to settle for the Capital City half again this Spring, which leaves me less time to get myself up to speed. Literally.
