November came and went and was a pretty decent month weather-wise. Not too cold, pretty mild and plenty of seasonably warm runs in shorts and capris. I was spoiled. Because as soon as December 1 came, we got SNOW.
And I’m not talking about a few flurries, or even an inch here and there that makes it look all festive. Nope, I’m talking about 15+ inches of wet, heavy snow that came down and didn’t stop, making it somewhat hard to run.
I’m not a fan of snow. And I’m not good at running in it, especially when it’s ice covered by snow, and that’s what we ended up getting. So, I had a few extra treadmill days this week than I would’ve liked, but still managed to keep up my running streak, which was exactly what I needed to keep me sane.
Here’s what the week looked like:

I ran inside three days this week, but did manage to get out in the snow for two of the days. One morning I wore my Yaktrax, but it wasn’t worth it. The snow was still SO deep (look at it – it’s nearly to my calves!) so the places it wasn’t shoveled I was just jumping in snow/not really running. And then the places that had been shoveled had turned into ice and the kind of ice that my Yaktrax don’t work on so it was so slippery and I really didn’t enjoy it.
Luckily, the kids enjoyed playing in it 🙂
Saturday, enough had melted and been cleared that it was finally safe to run in the streets. So that’s what I did – I went when it was light out and pretty much just ran on residential streets. It made for a much nicer run and I was so much happier outside.
But I still prefer no snow! Here’s to hoping this week’s snow will melt and I’ll be back to just running on clear roads.
Some questions for you:
- Did you get any snow this week?
- Do you use Yaktrax? Or other gear to keep you from slipping in the snow?
I’m linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down.
oh wow so much snow! We don’t get much in DC normally. I do like at least one snow storm to play around in. If we do it will be Feb or March for us. There is always something so pretty about it. I do have yaktrax but don’t use them that much. I love my snow shoes and hope I have the chance to take them out this year
We don’t usually get enough snow for Yak Tracks, but we do tend to get freezing rain which makes even walking dicey. We also don’t usually get snow until January. A white Christmas is always a surprise.
I’m still in shock that Ohio and other states got SO much snow that early in December. Talk about a Winter Wonderland!
Wow, that’s a major snowfall! Nothing in Iowa (I hope I’m not jinxing anything by saying that)…but we did get a couple of weird heavy snowfalls in early October.

No snow here, stayed too warm yesterday with the n’oreaster.
Kudos on pushing through for some serious mileage
Well I live in Florida, so…. No. We did get a frost this week and that was really pretty. I would love some snow, just to mix things up.
Never had any need for YaxTrax either. Even with a frost there’s really not much to slip on, so it’s not necessary.
We only got a little bit of snow. I wish we would have gotten the amount you did! I have Yaktrax but haven’t worn them for years. I figure if there is a change it’s icy and I’ll need them, I’d rather just avoid the chance of falling!
