Let the vacation begin!

This week started our summer vacation. The kiddos have been home for a month, but this week B and I both took off some time to start a family trip. We packed up the car and headed out to Albany late Wednesday night/early Thursday morning.

With vacation comes late nights, fun times — but not as regular running, at least for me. It’s hard for me to get out and leave the little ones when I’m traveling, especially since they get up so early.

Still, this past week was a good week and I got in daily runs and core exercises before we hit the road. Here’s what the week looked like:

Sunday: 4.2 miles. It was hot by the time I got out of the house, even for me. It was 80 degrees, feels like 90s, but really a beautiful day. Later we hit up the Guardians game to continue with our celebration of FW’s birthday and it was a hot game!

Monday: 5.01 drizzly miles run plus core workout. I woke up to some drizzle, but was still able to get outside and run. It was drizzling most of the time, leaving me wet, but not soaked.

Tuesday: 5.04 rainy miles plus core workout, 2 mile walk later in the day. It was again raining, but this time it was more than a drizzle. I ended the run soaking wet! It stopped raining about 4 miles in, but even with my mile left to go, I was still wet. I’ve said it before, but I do prefer 60s and rainy to cold, so I really can’t complain.

Wednesday: 5.6 miles plus core workout. It was hazy outside, but I was glad it finally wasn’t raining. The only problem was the air quality – it was smoky again from the Canadian wildfires! I actually didn’t make the connection until B said something later in the morning, and that’s when it clicked about why it had been hazy out. Not haze – smoke (see photo):

Thursday: Off day. After an 8+ hour car ride through the night Wednesday and an early morning wakeup (hello almost 2-year-old!) I was pooped. But had a fabulous day, which started out meeting up with my best friends from high school at a nearby playground for our kids to meet/hang out! It was the perfect start to my vacation.

Friday: 5 miles.  GM woke up before 6 a.m. in his pack and play (ugh!) and after a few attempts, wouldn’t go back to sleep. Luckily my parents were already up. They offered to watch him while I went out for a run. After the run, we hit the road for a trip to a nearby lake and meet up with some close family friends. The day included some time in the lake, tennis, and a cookout. That night, I met up with my girlfriends again for dinner and drinks out! It was a long, but so fun and fulfilling day.

Saturday: 4.2 miles. After being out late (1 a.m. is late for me now!), I was TIRED but B convinced me to get in a run. Always a good idea and something that always helps me feel less tired.

Total mileage: 29.05 miles run + miscellaneous walking

Questions for you:

  • Do you have any plans for the Fourth of July?
  • Any air quality alerts near you this week?

I am linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down.

  1. Yes w also had the bad air quality this week although not as bad as a few weeks ago. I am hoping it is not our new normal. It is nice that you all get to get away and spend time w friends and family. Enjoy your week!

  2. Thankfully, the Iowa air quality hasn’t been too compromised. We’ve had a lot of hazy mornings, though. Great job on your vacation miles!

  3. I think you did great with your running- it’s not easy while on vacation with kids. It sounds like a really fun time.
Air quality has been good here- as long as you don’t mind hot and humid!

  4. Oh, gosh, 1 am is really late for me. I would be so tired the next day, but I am sure the fun was worth it.

It’s great you got so many runs in —even if you had to brave the rain and the smoke.

  5. Looks like an amazing vacation week! I’m so sorry about the smoke. I hope that clears up for you soon. And I empathize: A was the earliest of early birds. Even now, as a teen, he doesn’t sleep past 9 on his days off.

I’m very opposed to the rain, but I guess I’d take it over smoke. Stay safe.

  6. awesome mileage before your vacation and great that you got some miles in once you hit your destination! I always try to do whatever I can before taking time off and fit in what i can when I’m away. In fact, THIS week I’m on vacation! So I get it. Life is also about having fun and spending time with family and friends 🙂
