Hello 2024!

Last week I know I mentioned that 2023 was a good year, but so far 2024 is also off to a good start. I entered the year with a slight head cold, but compared to 2023 (where we started the year with COVID), I’m already off to a better January.

This week included a few outdoor runs, a few indoor runs, some sleeping in, and back to the routine. It was nice to only have to get up early two days this week – Thurs/Fri – because even though I was back at work on Tuesday, the kids didn’t have school until Thursday so I could sleep in and run at 6:30. (Sigh – this is me remembering when sleeping in was sleeping until 8:30 or later, ha!) The week went by fast, but I know next week the winter doldrums will hit as I go back to waking up early every day and kid evening activities go back in full force.

Here’s how the week looked:

Sunday: 4.6 outdoor miles – The weather was cool but clear, so I was excited to get outside for my New Years’ Eve miles. I finished off 2023 strong with 1,500+ miles!

Monday: 5.02 miles outside – I was excited to be able to get in some New Years Day miles AND did it in a fun way – check out the 2024 I made 🙂

Tuesday: 5.08 miles outside –  I was so grateful to get outside and run in my new running gear (thanks to B, for Christmas, I got a great running jacket from Lululemon to wear in this weather!).

Wednesday: 5.1 miles outside – Last day of running “late” before school started, so I took advantage of it.

Thursday: 7.26 miles (divided between outside and dreadmill) and core work (first time in a few weeks) – I got in 5.26 miles before work outside in the dark – it was snowy and a little slippery, so I wore my Yaktrax for the first time this season. Then, at lunchtime I was dying to get out for a walk, but instead popped on the treadmill for 2 miles. I was also able to get back into core work now that the kids were back in school and we were back in our morning routine.

Friday: 7.03 treadmill miles (divided between before work and lunchtime) and core work – The teeny bit of snow we had gotten Thursday morning was mostly melted so it turned into ice overnight and I didn’t want to run on it in the dark where I couldn’t see where the slippery sidewalks were. I opted for 5 treadmill miles in the a.m. and then another 2 during my lunchbreak.

Saturday: 4.09 miles outside – We had early-ish plans, but I was glad to get outside after a few miles. The sidewalks were still icy but the streets were okay and since it was light, I could easily see where to run (and where to avoid). We had a busy day after my run – we went to Home Depot to participate in their monthly free activity. The kids made toy trucks, which were so cool! Then, we headed to FW’s basketball game – it was his first game and they tied 10-10. That afternoon, we also had a piano lesson for FW. We finished the day with pizza and a movie.

Total mileage: 38.18 mi

Questions for you:

  • Now that the holidays are over, has your routine changed?
  • Do you run outside in the snow, ice, etc. winter weather?

Sounds like you didn’t miss a beat! I’m never one to shy away from inclement weather–only ice and lightning will keep me inside. It looks like we’re going have a big storm this week, so it should be interesting!

Good luck with your storm! I also so cautious when it comes to slippery roads/ice especially since it’s so dark when I run. I used to be more brave!

I’m still trying to shake my holiday routine — I got used to sleeping in until daylight so my dark o’clock alarm is rough!

We had a chance of snow yesterday, but only got rain.

I feel that. The darkness is just so.. dark! And makes me long for summer or at least another vacation!

Be careful on that ice! Treadmill is such a great option to have. Yaktraks can only do so much!

Looks like your year is off to a great start! Way to go!

Yes – I need to give myself credit for those treadmill runs. But those outdoor runs feel more “real” and it’s easier to do – on the treadmill I’m always nervous I’m going to wake the family!

My routine doesn’t change much (workout-wise) over the holidays, but my work week was a bit nutzo with two 3-day weeks! I pretty much run outside year-round, but do pay attention to the weather conditions and vary the time (or day) if need be.

Yay for being able to do several runs outside. Isn’t it nice to have a treadmill as an option?

I love that Home Depot has those free activities for kids. Wish they’d had them when our sons were little. You’re awesome for taking advantage of them. I bet your kids have a blast!

My daughter doesn’t go back to school till Tuesday, so I’ve been enjoying later wake-ups all week! The 5:30 alarm is going to be painful (I know- that’s sleeping in for some people!) Apart from the early wakeups, it is kind of nice when the kids go back and we can get back to our regular routines. Sounds like you had a great start to 2024!

Those later wakeups with the kids home has been so nice!! But yes, getting back to a regular routine can be good … sometimes 😉

Amazing start of the year with running every day! And with snow too!
I’m not changing anything about my routine, except trying to get better with nutrition, particularly on training days to optimise energy and performance. Other than that I’ll just keep up what I was doing before Christmas.

If we had winter weather, I would probably run in it. Maybe not ice. As it is, the only thing that really keeps me inside are thunderstorms and hurricanes.

I’m glad your year is starting off better than last year! That’s huge!

We just got back from a trip, so we are looking forward to returning to a routine of sorts.

    Love that 2024 run.

Happy your year has started off well.

Mine has not. But hopefully things will improve.

We haven’t had a proper winter so far (or last) but I will run outside unless its unsafe, and then I’ll go into the gym. I see it as just one more tool in our arsenal./ Congratulations on your solid start.
