Everyday I’m Treadmilling

Well, I was hoping for a “normal” week with schedules, but due to school being closed two days this week, frigid temps AND snow, it was another somewhat wacky week. I got in my runs in the mornings but the school closures prevented me from doing much after that, so I got in a pretty typical mileage week — nothing close to my 40+ miles last week, and not much cross training. We also had COLD weather – I’m talking single digits and “feels like” in the negatives in the mornings, with snow/ice on the ground, and then we got several inches of snow when it finally “warmed” up to the 20s.

Here’s how the full week looked — warning, it’s pretty boring!

Sunday: 5.25 miles on the treadmill – The roads were slicker than I would have liked, as it started flurrying while I was running. Nothing was really sticking but it made some spots slippery and hard to see. I actually almost turned home to run on the treadmill when I found a long street that was pretty clear, so I just ran up and down it a few times to hit my 5 mile goal.

Monday: 5.04 miles on the treadmill plus core workout – I did get to sleep in a little bit, since the kids were off school and we didn’t need to leave the house until 8 for a dr appt for GM. I set my alarm for 6, got in a run and core workout, and then we were off on our day! It was nice to have an extra day off after a full weekend of kid activities. We spent the day at a really cool indoor playground with the kids and then hit up Costco before the kids had their normal activities — ballet and basketball practice.

Tuesday: 5.25 miles on the treadmill plus core workout – It was cold AND snowing when I woke up and I’m glad I opted to stay in. I had some running friends who did run outside and it sounded like it was not worth it. So thankfully no need for FOMO. That night I had book club and enjoyed some good food and company — it’s not often I do things on a week night and it was fun! I baked a new chocolate chip cookie recipe to bring and they were a hit (here’s the recipe: I Made Travis Kelce’s Mom’s Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe).

Wednesday: snow day! 5.25 miles on the treadmill and core work – School was closed due to the COLD! But they called it off Tuesday night so we knew ahead of time and I was able to sleep in until 5:30 before getting up to run, which was GREAT. I got in a run and core work and didn’t have to rush to get the kids ready.  If I were really amazing I would’ve gotten up normal time and managed to do some kettlebells or bike before my run … but I took advantage of the sleeping in, especially after being up later than usual thanks to book club.

Thursday:  5.05 treadmill miles, kettlebells and core work – I decided to do some kettlebells to start my morning and boy, was it hard. It was only a 10 min workout, but I think I need a lighter weight in my weightroom right now. Then I hopped on the treadmill, followed by some core work. I ran slower than usual because my legs were TIRED after the kettlebells already!

Friday: snow day! 5.25 treadmill miles and core work – Yes, ANOTHER SNOW DAY! This time we actually had snow and the kids were off. This meant I could sleep in a little bit, but also meant another treadmill day, and lots more treadmill days in my future it looks like. We got more than 1 foot of snow! I don’t know if it will melt anytime soon. At least the kiddos loved it!

Saturday: 3.1 treadmill miles – Ugh, I am having some quad pain and I definitely felt it this morning. I ran 2 miles, then walked/ran the rest before calling it. I may need to take a rest day and see what’s going on. Hopefully it’s just a quick fix ?

Total mileage: 34.19 mi

Questions for you:

  • Have you ever strained your quad?

  • Did you get some frigid temps or snow this week?

I am linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down.

  1. Wow, that’s a lot of snow! We got a few inches that have stuck around because it’s so cold, but that will change this week. It’s supposed to be in the teens tomorrow but near 60 on Thursday!!

I hope your quad quiets down soon. Maybe a few days off is all it needs!

  2. My reaction to all that snow and ice is just eeew… I’m sorry your routine got disrupted because of it. I hope your quad calms down asap with some rest, I strained mine years ago when I played soccer. But back then I knew nothing about real warmups and crosstraining or conditioning.
We’ve had cold temps here with frost, but no snow (thank goodness) and now we’re back to mild weather but rain and strong winds.

  3. 5-point-something miles on the treadmill seemed to be the theme for you this week! I hope your quad pain is noting major and a day or two off from running will do the trick!

I love the Friday snow pic of your kiddo!

  4. Wow you guys got a lot of snow! We ended up with 7 inches here and I ran on my treadmill for all of my runs.
I actually ended up with hip flexor tendonitis AND a quad strain this past year. It was awful. I should have listened to my body when I felt it all starting but I was training for a half marathon so of course I ignored it and just kept going. Not the smartest decision I have made! If I would have just slowed down and taken some time off it would not have ended up as bad as it was. I ended up going to a few sessions of physical therapy just because I was scared I had done something horrible to my leg!! I ended up having to work on my glute strength (still a process) and my deep core muscles as my quads had become dominant.

  5. Oh no on the injury…. hope it’s minor.

I strained my aalf a few yeas ago and I went to a chiro who did ART… it’s painful but amazing… cured it quickly.

    Yes… frigid here!!!!!!!

I tried the treadmill this week. I quit after ONE mile! So I am in awe of you.

  6. Oof. That is a lot of snow and cold! Thank goodness for treadmills. No, I’ve never strained my quad- which is kind of funny because I feel like I’ve had every other running injury. I hope yours calms down with a little rest.

  7. Yes, the snow and cold hit Iowa big time last week! Kudos for all your treadmill time; I wish I had that kind of enthusiasm (or tolerance, LOL).

  8. We have about a foot of snow too! But this weekend we went up to Wisconsin and there was 2 feet of snow on the ground! I did take my run outside but it was cold. I’m about ready for spring. What do you think?

  9. Aww, love the snow pic! So cute.

Nothing wrong with the treadmill! It’s a super tool to get through the winter. Good job sticking with it!

  10. So many snow days! I used to love those when I was a kid. Of course, those were always the days I woke up earliest. Now we get hurricane days. It’s just not quite as magical.

I hope that quad feels better. I’ve never strained that one before, but it can’t be comfortable.
