First Zero Mileage Week In Years

Well, I did it. A full week with no running. Did I like it? No. Would I like to continue doing this? No! But I know that I need to take some time off now so that hopefully I can be back sooner than if I keep going through the pain.

That said, I stayed somewhat active this week – I didn’t run, but I stayed on the indoor bike most days and got in a few walks, as well as my core and arm work. But when looking at my running log, this is the longest I’ve gone without running since GM was born – that was the last time I took a full week (and more) off from running.

Here’s how the full week looked:

Sunday: 2.25 miles walking, core work and pilates –  I had so much fun at the Training Season Kickoff Run for the Cleveland Marathon! But then I woke up Sunday and was SORE. Running 5 miles was not a good idea on my hip adductor. So I decided to take the day off and not even bike in the morning. I did a pilates video, core video and then later in the day got out for a walk with GM in the sunshine.

Monday: core plus 1 hour bike with a little arms, plus 2.17 mile walk – I hopped on the bike before work and finished the Crown! I can’t believe the series is done with. While on the bike, I used a light kettlebell and did some arm workouts every few minutes or so. That afternoon, I got outside for a short walk in the sunshine (yay!) – it was cold but the sun brightened my spirits.

Tuesday: core plus 1 hour bike with a little arms and 2.35 mi walking –  It was another biking day! I got in 1 hour on the bike after some core work. I also did some arm workouts while on the bike. At lunch, it was sunny out and I was working from home, so I got in a nice walk to the lake.

Wednesday: 50 minute bike ride (with some arms), core work  – I got in another morning bike ride before heading into the office. I started another movie – I was looking for award-nominated movies so I started the new Natalie Portman movie, May to December.

Thursday:  45 minute bike ride, core work and 4 miles walking  – It was a GORGEOUS day out – I’m talking nearly 60 degrees – so I had to get outside for a walk. It was sunny and the Vitamin D was good for my soul.

Friday: 50 minute bike, core work and 4 mile walk – I started watching Nyad while on the bike, and am enjoying it. It was also FIFTY DEGREES out! I was sad not to be out running in shorts, but I did get to enjoy the weather with a little walk.

Saturday: 55 minutes on the bike, core work and 2.85 mile walk – GM woke up early, so I got in a bike ride before everyone else in the house was awake. Then, it was 50 degrees out and I was able to get in 2 short walks between the daily activities — basektball, ice skating, piano lessons, grocery shopping and soccer. It was a busy day but I was glad to be able to get outside.

Not running-related, but all this extra time without running has given me more time to take walks and bake! I made these Football-Shaped Chocolate Peanut Butter Balls (Buckeyes) for the Super Bowl – they’re so easy and cute.

Questions for you:

  • What’s the longest you haven’t run recently?
  • Did you get any nice weather recently?

I am linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down.

  1. Sorry about the zero runs but hopefully it will help you help.

5 months with no running after ankle surgery.

Sunny here all week with warm temps today.

    Winter is returning though.

  2. I don’t think I’ve had zero running since I broke my leg and foot a few years ago. Like you, I kept busy, doing what I could do until it healed. I hope you feel better soon! Those peanut butter footballs look yummy!

  3. I think you are really smart to take off and heal. Always better to take a week or 2 off then having to take months off. Trust me been there! Hope this week is better for you

  4. Omg those peanut butter balls are so cute!
Yeah, it especially sucks when you can’t run and the weather is beautiful (like why can’t it just rain all week, or be a huge blizzard?) But, you kept active which is the best thing you could possibly do (movement=bloodflow=healing.) I hope it’s feeling better and you can get back out these soon!

  5. I am sorry you are still dealing with adductor issues but glad you chose to take a week off of running. Hopefully that extra rest will help! I LOVE those football buckeyes! You can’t go wrong with peanut butter and chocolate.I love to bake as well and have something planned to bake today for the super bowl.

We also had unusually warm weather this week! I have had to go months without running before, but it did force me to focus on strength and mobility, which ended up helping me return to running in better shape that I was before… but still a very frustrating process.

  6. My most recent running sabbatical was last summer, following my bike crash. My ribs were so sore, it hurt to run, so I took a couple weeks off. I do a lot of other non-running stuff, anyways, so it wasn’t a big deal. Thankfully, it was in the summer, so I was outside all the time anyways (walking and/or biking).

  7. Oh no, bummer that you’re having to take some time off from running, but as you said, it’s better to nip it in the bud now so you can get back to running sooner rather than running through the pain and prolonging the healing time. Nice job on staying active away from the running trail!

  8. I think I ran a few times in January but other than that I haven’t, due to pneumonia. Glad you were able to get out for some fresh air and sunshine. The sun makes everything better. Nice job with all that time on the bike! Those PB footballs are so cute!

  9. I adore your peanut butter footballs!
So sorry about your pain and week with no running. I hope it will help! I’m glad to hear you can do some cycling though, and walk. We’ve had some lovely weather here but today it’s colder. We’ll see.

  10. Aw, I know it’s hard to be out there, not running. You will be back. I know it.

My longest was probably about 6-7 months after my surgery. it was awful and I hated every second of it, but to be honest, I barely remember those times. The cycling will get you through until you’re ready to run again.

  11. Well, the longest I didn’t run was definitely when I broke my leg in 2018, but that was awhile ago. I know its tough to be injured and I am hoping for all to be well soon!

Those Superbowl treats look amazing though- so definitely nice to have a bit more time to bake, looks like you are talented! 🙂
