March is Definitely a Lion

As happy as I am to back running (yay!) we had more snow (boo!) this week! And we had more snow than no snow this week:

Sunday – snowed.

Monday – snowed.

Tuesday – snowed.

Wednesday – snowed.

Thursday – no snow, but high was in the 20s so it was COLD.

Friday – snow.

Saturday – snow, and this time it stuck to the ground.

Now, I am lucky that it only flurried most of those days so we got minor accumulation, but it still didn’t help my running and made everything just a little more slippery and less manageable. The only day I really woke up to snow accumulation was Saturday. BUT I’m also happy to be back and running PAIN FREE. My leg has been feeling good and I’ve been trying to be good about taking days off from running and focusing on other activities. I was pleased to get in an early morning 9 miler one morning this week for my long run, plus some runs and cross training. Overall, it was a good week of getting back into the swing of things. Next, hopefully I can start up some speed training again.

Sunday: 4 treadmill miles in the hotel gym and 2ish miles walking. Anytime I get in a workout when on vacation with the kids is a good time – it doesn’t happen often. I then also got in 2 miles walking around Pittsburgh with the family before we hit the road home.

Monday: 5 mile run in the daylight, and 1 mile walk later in the day. Big kids didn’t have school, so I got out as the sun was coming up and enjoyed every minute of it. During lunch, I got out for a short walk with the big kids. I may have bribed them with candy necklaces (they got them during the St. Patrick’s Day parade) to get outside.

Tuesday: 15 minutes on the rower, 35 minutes cycling, core and arm workout and 2 miles walking. I woke up to a light dusting of snow and ice, and knew I probably shouldn’t go out for a run in the dark and ice – so it was a good day for cross training! I’m trying to incorporate more non-running days into my routine, and Tuesday was the perfect chance for this. I did get in a quick 2 mile walk at lunchtime after the snow/ice had mostly melted.

Wednesday: 9.04 miles running outside, core work and 1.4 miles walking in the snow at lunch – In looking at the forecast, it called for snow every single morning but Wednesday looked the warmest. So, I decided to try to get in my long run Wednesday. I woke up with the goal of doing 7 miles, then looked at my plan and realized that I was actually due for 8. I made it outside and at mile 6, I was feeling pretty good and told myself to see if I could do 8 or 9. Sure enough, I made it to 9! My last mile was actually my fastest, as I booked it home when I realized I was running a little late. Overall, this went much better than last week’s 7 miler where I walked much of the time. I also got in a core workout and short walk later in the day.

Thursday: 15 minutes on the rower, 35 minutes on the bike, arm and core workout — I decided to rest my legs after Wednesday’s long run and was glad I chose to stay inside. It was COLD when I woke up – the high was only in the 20s!

Friday: 5.1 mile run outside — I slept a little late again, so I didn’t get in a full workout, but was glad to get outside even though it was COLD!

Saturday: 4.04 snowy miles outside — We had snow overnight, but I really wanted to get out and run before kid activities, so I set an alarm to run and put on my Yaktrax and did it. The snow was the perfect depth when I went out and not yet slippery from people walking on it yet. Then, it was time to help set up for a school Easter Egg Hunt, followed by FW’s last indoor soccer game of the season. I was glad we were inside – it was too snowy for an outdoor game!

Questions for you:

  1. What’s the earliest you’d get up during the week for a run?
  2. Did you get snow or wintry weather again this week?

I am linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down.

  1. so glad to read you are feeling better and back to running. It sure did feel like winter again this week! I am not an early bird so the wrong person to ask about getting up early!

  2. I cannot believe all of your snow! Those candy necklaces bring back memories. So glad you are back to running pain free! I have woken up as early as 3:30 am for a long run when I was in training. My friend I was training with had young children that played sports and we had a really long run on the schedule so 3:30 it was!

  3. Oof! I’m looking at your and Melodie’s comments- 3:30 am? That’s hardcore. The earliest I get up these days is 5:00 am, but I’ve definitely gotten up earlier in the past. I don’t think it ever started with a 3, though.

I’m very glad to hear you’re running again, pain-free!!! Even in the snow- any running is good running.

  4. ICK to all that snow! Wow, you really got hit hard (for this time of year). I’m up before 5:30 most mornings, and usually wake up before my 4:30 alarm on the #5at5 mornings 😉 There have been a few times I’ve gotten up earlier, though, when I’ve had long runs on deck (marathon training) and needed to avoid the heat or had a busy weekend and needed a weekday long run.

  5. That’s great news that you’re pain-free when running! You’re smart to add more cardio cross training into your routine. I wish I’d done that when I was younger.

To answer your questions, before my brother-in-law’s wedding, my husband and I were on the trail at 4:30 AM for our long run so I probably got up at 3:30 AM. No snow for a month or so for us, but we did have a cold rain yesterday and we’ve had lots of wind!

  6. I got up at 4 on Tuesday, so I think that’s my answer. Even then I had the Chicago time difference in my favor.

We didn’t get snow, but a lot of cold rain.

  7. I’m so glad you are able to run again, even if the weather wasn’t optimal. Sometimes getting out there and running in it definitely makes it less awful.

When my boys were little, I used to get up at 4 am to run so I could get it done before my hubs left for work. I get up once a week at 430 to get my pool run in. It’s always difficult!

  8. OMG THE SNOW!

    That’s crazy!

So I’ve gotten up as early as 3/3:30 AM for a long run. It sucks but things have to get done.

We don’t get the same kind of weather you have, but we have had storms all week.

I’m glad you’re running pain free!
