Is It Finally Spring?

Happy Easter to those who celebrate! And Happy Spring break to us!

In addition to my weekly update, this post serves as my (mostly) March in review post. I can’t believe that April 1 is TOMORROW.

March was an okay month for me.

Total mileage: 112.58 miles – ish  (We’ll see if I get in a run today with everything going on)

The good – Overcoming/healing from my hip issues and getting back into running. I’m still not 100% – I feel sore if I run too many days in a row or too long, but it’s not pain or debilitating like before. And I successfully started cross-training, which includes some minor lifting, core workouts, rowing machine, walking and indoor cycling.

The bad – My running mileage was low (For me), as I’m trying to incorporate more xtraining and less running. Also, I’m still not feeling 100%, which is discouraging less than 2 months from my half marathon.  That said, with March ending, perhaps spring is finally here and I can stop running in snow, etc.? Who am I kidding – I just jinxed it!

Sunday: 7 miles running outside! Plus some planking, stretching and ~2.5 miles walking. I had a lot of time on my feet Sunday, which felt good, especially as the snow we’d had Friday into Saturday had started melting and the sun was shining. It was still cold out – 20s during my run and low 40s during my walk – but the blue skies and sunshine made all the difference. I was glad to have gotten in a long (For me) run on the weekend – it doesn’t happen often!

I also got in a walk during naptime, and then Sunday after dinner, we also got in a family walk – it was finally nice outside AND light still, to get in a walk with the kiddos.

Monday: cross training! Rower, cycling, core and arm workout and ~2 miles walk later in the day. After all my feet/legs movement on Sunday, I decided to take the day off and focus on cross training on Monday. I had to convince myself that it was a good idea — “old me” would’ve run without a problem or issue. But I’m really trying to listen to my body and NOT get re-injured right now, especially when I have a half marathon I’d like to run in May!

Tuesday5.03 miles running, 5 minutes cool down on the bike, strength and core, 1 mile walking. I miraculously woke up to 50 degree weather, but it was WINDY! We had a wind advisory in effect until the afternoon, and I was a little nervous going out for a run. I didn’t want to blow away! Or more likely, have a tree branch or debris fall and hit me. Luckily, it was okay and I got home in time to get in a core workout, some arms, and a short cooldown on the bike. I also got in a mileish walk at lunchtime.

Wednesday: 8.05 miles running. I snoozed just a little too long to get in anything besides a run, but not quite long enough to postpone a workout. I was pleased to still have just enough time to get in a long run for the week – 8 miles. I felt okay during the run – mentally, I struggled starting around mile 4 when I realized I hadn’t run far enough away from home and only had 2 miles to get home, so I had to do some extra laps around a few blocks so I wouldn’t get home 2 miles early. My leg was a little tender, but nothing painful.

Thursday: 3.57 miles running and 15 minutes on the bike, plus core workout and 2 mile walk. I needed to rest my legs a little – my hip was a little sore after my longer Wednesday run, but I wanted to get it moving to see how it felt. Also, I know I’ll have plenty of non-running days next week when we are on vacation, so wanted to keep up the running this week. It was another COLD morning in comparison to earlier in the week, it was only 30 when I went outside for a run. At lunchtime it was almost 50 degrees, and I got in a short walk.

Friday: 2.25 mile run outside, 7 minutes on the bike and 21 minutes on the rower plus core workout. I slept a little late again, so I didn’t get in a full workout, but was glad to get outside even though it was COLD!

Saturday: treadmill 5K, 45 minutes on the bike and core and kettlebell workout, 5K walk later. FW had an early baseball tryout, so while B took him there I got on the treadmill, bike and kettlebells with the little kids played and watched some TV. Again, I am SO grateful to have an indoor gym in my house so for days that I want to workout but have to be around the kids, I can do it. It doesn’t always happen  – GM was making it especially difficult because he wanted to play baseball in the house and not watch TV, but when I can make it happen it feels even better. At naptime later, while the house slept, I got in a walk outside — it was nice to get in 3 miles outside.

Questions for you:

  1. Do you have Easter plans if you celebrate? We will start our day with an Easter egg hunt, then mass, then brunch with B’s family, then we fly out for Spring break!
  2. What’s a “good” month in terms of mileage numbers for you?

I am linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down.

  1. 112 miles is a lot of miles to me! Normally, i average about 80-90 miles per month. Anything over 100 is a bonus. But i only run 3 days per week, with pool running and CrossFit rounding out the other days. I always take one rest day. I can’t run every day–I’ve been running so long that my body rebels!

Enjoy your Easter!! My boys and their girlfriends will be here, as will be my parents.

  2. I am glad you are feeling better. That seems like a lot miles to me. I run 3x a week and do strength the others. Have a great Easter

  3. My hamstring has made me let go of all mileage goals — I’m just grateful for every one!

We’re planning on an Easter bike ride and having my Mom over for dinner.

    Enjoy Spring Break!

  4. It’s great that you’re keeping the core workouts going and cross training regularly.

For years I ran 50 miles a week, but in hindsight, I wish I’d run less – I never really took breaks between training cycles. Perhaps if I hadn’t been so gung ho on training I’d still be running regularly today. 😦

    Happy Easter!

  5. Don’t worry if your mileage is a little lower- cross training counts! You’ll be fine for your race.

Your spring break is late! We’re finally finishing up everyone’s spring breaks here. We had an Easter egg hunt this morning and my kids still get Easter baskets- we’ll have a nice dinner later on. Enjoy the day, and enjoy your upcoming trip!

  6. That’s a lot for me… my goal is 84 and that will give me 1000 for the year. I’m behind since I didn’t run for a month and then eased back.

Happy to hear that you are back at it.

I planned on the gym today but it was closed for Easter. Took a walk instead and then had dinner at my MIL’s.

  7. You had great mileage! You should be super proud!

I haven’t really decided what I want my monthly mileage to be. I just haven’t looked at the data and stats lately.

We celebrated Easter with baskets and a nice meal with family. It was nice, but I’m exhausted from the prep and cooking.

  8. I agree with some of the others, your mileage is impressive! I seldom ever break 100; usually in the 80 range (maybe a little higher in the warmer months).

  9. We didn’t do much for Easter, though it was a 4 day weekend in London- but we just returned back from Italy on Friday morning, so I was happy to keep things lowkey!

Love that sunshine! I am glad your injury is essentially behind you and you are back to some solid mileage! Great work on that Wednesday morning 8 miler. I hate when I miscalculate the route like that! But you made it work 🙂
