Almost Summertime Running

Happy almost official start of summer! It feels like summer here and I’m loving it. We had some good sunshine this week, some warm days, but all in all, not bad running weather here.

Some highlights for this week –

I got in a long (for me) run on Sunday – 9 miles! I am not training for anything right now, and it felt good to get outside and run. I also felt good the rest of the week – no big soreness after completing the 9 miler.

I did a 5K race with FW! I didn’t get to truly race it (for me) because I wanted to run with FW the full time, but I also wanted to push him to run fast (for him). We haven’t run together in a while (since Christmas!) so it was great to get outside and run with him. He did great – and then after the race went to baseball practice so he was definitely tired!

Here’s how the week looked:

Sunday: 9 mile run –  I had planned on doing a longish run Sunday morning, and was hoping to do 6-8 miles before an early birthday party. I set my alarm to get up early while everyone was still sleeping. Well, I felt great at 6 miles and 7 and knew I wanted to get in more than 8. If I hadn’t had to get home to get ready for the party, I may have done an impromptu 10 miler! I am proud I was able to still get in 9 and felt good. I did some good stretching after the run too as a precaution.

Monday: 5.02 mile run, stretching and core work – I set my alarm early to get in some running, biking and core work – but of course I was too tired to get up in time, and had to decide on stretching/core workout or biking – and today, core workout won.

Tuesday: 5.13 miles running and 16 minutes on the bike – Once again I set my alarm early, and didn’t quite wake up on time. I did have 15ish minutes left after my run, so instead of core work, today I chose a cool down on the exercise bike. It was a beautiful morning again and I saw a heron flying over the lake when I ran by so I had to stop to take a photo.

Wednesday: 5.27 miles running, core work, plank and stretching – I actually got out of bed when I wanted! I did about 20 minutes of strength work, including some stretching and core workouts, and then got in a 5.27 mile run. It was a beautiful morning and although I was tired, it felt great to be outside and moving. I was able to incorporate about a mile of trails/woodchips/path, which was a nice change.

Thursday: 4 miles running and core work – I had a busy day and a doctor appointment, so I didn’t get in my mid-day walk. GM also woke up earlier than I thought, so I had to finish my workout early. I was glad to be able to finish up and do my core workout with him, though!  He was a good sport and hung out while I did my abs and stretching.

Friday: 38 minutes on the bike (about 10 miles), planking, core workout, some arms and 3.33 mi walk– I hadn’t take a day off since before my half marathon in May, and decided that I should rest my legs and also spend some time on other areas. I did an easy indoor bike workout, plus some strength workout, which included arms and core.  I also got in an hour walk at lunch, which was 3.33 miles – it was fun because I walked to the grocery store to pick up grapes and then the bakery to get bread and then home – a productive lunch break!

Saturday: 5K race! – There’s a race that starts walking distance from my house, so it’s always a pleasure to be able to run it. This year, for the first time, FW wanted to run the 5K with me. I tried pacing him to 9ish minute miles, but after a few hills he did stop to walk for a few minutes. At one point, we passed another kid who had stopped who was a little older than FW (2 years older but same AG for awards), and I told my son we could probably beat him (to motivate him). But suddenly, the DAD PICKED UP THE BOY and started running with him, carrying him nearly to the finish line (passing us). When they got less than a block from the finish line, he put the boy down and the boy finished about 30 seconds in front of us. The boy ended up getting a 3rd place medal.

I have mixed feelings about this – FW was disappointed because he was so close to getting a medal and didn’t … but he would have if the dad hadn’t carried his son the last half a mile to the finish line. But it’s just a fun race, so should it really matter that FW didn’t get a medal? (This dad does races and triathlons, he knew what he was doing by carrying his son ahead of us)

Total: 31.42 mi of running

Questions for you:

  • If you read what I shared above- do you think the boy/dad cheated FW out of a medal?
  • Are there any races you can walk to near you?

I am linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down.

  1. Congrats on getting some good miles on your long run! That always feels good.

I’m with you on that race situation with the dad carrying his son–I don’t think that was right. I get why he did it, but it’s not fair to the other kids.

  2. Um, no. It’s one thing to carry your son in a fun run, but no way should he have accepted the award. Jeesh!

Glad you son had fun—he’s the winner for running the course on his own legs. 😉

  3. Yes, I feel that your son was cheated out of a medal. I get that it’s a fun run, but that’s not fair. Let the dad carry the son, but don’t accept the medal then. But looking on the bright side- glad your son had fun and he did great!!! Congratulations to him.

You had a great week- that 9 miler sounds like a great run. I love runs like that, where you just don’t want to stop.

  4. Nice week, and kudos on fitting in some non-running fitness 😉

I agree, the son’s father earned the medal, not the son himself. And, as a seasoned runner/triathlete, he should have known better and been mindful of the other kids participating.

  5. You got some great runs in this week (it’s tough to get up but these early morning miles – when the temps are still decent – are so rewarding). And I love when you want to keep going on your long run.

I am sorry FW didn’t get the medal and yes, I do think he was cheated out of one because the dad picked up his kid and carried it. I agree with Kim that he should have been mindful of the other kids that were participating and let his son earn – or not earn – the medal himself.

There are a couple of races that I can walk to and I love it .

  6. Great week for you!

I’m sorry about FW… he should have gotten the medal. Even in a fun run, integrity matters. I hope FW understands that he should be proud of himself and he did a great job.

I wish I could walk to races here. The closest ones to my house are about 5 miles away (and I guess yes, I could walk to them, or at least one of them), but that seems far super early in the morning.

  7. Aw man, that’s a bummer about the medal. I’m guessing the dad wouldn’t have purposely taken the medal away, but that stinks it happened like that. But as others said, he’s the winner for running it on his own!

I’ve been having a hard time getting up early lately too. It’s just too easy to stay up late in the summer!

  8. The dad absolutely should not have carried his son, and since he did, he should have told the race organizers that his son didn’t earn the medal and to present it to the next person who finished after his son. He’s teaching his son to cheat at a young age. I’m angry for FW.

Our annual Thanksgiving Day race is only a half mile from our house so we always walk to/from it.
