Summertime Sickness

Well, after last week’s 40+ mile week (a lot for me!) this week I had to tune it down somewhat as I was feeling under the weather. Who gets a cold in the summertime? Ugh – me, I guess! I started the week off feeling good, but as it went on felt a little worse and then couldn’t work out to my fullest extent. That said, I was still able to get in some running, exercise bike and walking. Here’s how the full week looked:

Sunday: 8.52 mile run, 1.31 mile walk –  This run felt good! I had stayed up late Saturday night (we didn’t get home as a family until after 11 – late for the 5 of us!) and then was glad I was able to get in a longer run Sunday. I even felt like I would’ve gone longer if I hadn’t had to be home for LM’s soccer practice.

Monday: 5.02 mile run, short indoor bike cool down, planking and push ups – After 4 days off, I was back to waking up early, running, going into the office, and back to the grind. I woke up with what was feeling like a stiff neck – I was hoping the run would help it but it didn’t do much.

Tuesday: 6.01 miles running, planking and pushups, 12 minutes on the indoor bike, 1.3 mile walk – I was glad to get out and run, but my neck was still feeling a little sore. The run/sweat actually felt good, and the I got in a short walk at lunchtime.

Wednesday: 3.2 miles running, 21 minutes indoor bike, core workout and pushups, 2 mile walk –  I woke up feeling achy again, and couldn’t seem to get out of bed. When I did get out the door, my body wasn’t feeling my run. After 1 mile, I decided to run/walk the rest with the goal of making it to 3, then focusing on some indoor workouts.

Thursday: 5.01 miles running, planking and pushups, 18 minutes on the bike – I once again was tired and didn’t make it out of bed as early as I usually do. I made it outside and it looked like it was going to rain the entire run, but it didn’t! I didn’t walk as much as I did on my 3.2 mile run, but still walked a bit more than usual. I cooled off with some bike, pushups and planking.

And seen on my run — this guy! Is this a woodchuck?

Friday: 5.02 mile run, 16 min on the indoor bike, planking and pushups, then 1.8 mile walk and some tennis – I woke up not feeling great – but this time I was 100% certain. I had a cold. I knew that a run would help. It usually does when I’m congested, and sure enough, despite the run being harder than usual, after my workout I felt better for at least a little while. I’ve never regretted going for a run and it was a gorgeous morning!

Saturday: 4 miles running, some arms, planking and pushups, then ~4.5ish miles walking – I got in a short run before the whole family headed to the farmers market! We have one about a mile from our house and it had been a while (a year) since we had last gone. It was great to go and get some produce, pickles and more. I was still feeling a little congested, but overall it felt good to move my body. Then in the afternoon while the kids were napping, I got in a short walk as well.

Total: 36.81 mi of running plus some indoor cycling workouts, walking, planking and push ups

Questions for you:

  • When was the last time you got sick in the summer?
  • What’s your go-to Farmer’s Market buy?

  1. It looks like you still got some good miles in despite being sick! A lot of people here are getting Covid. I guess it’s just another virus at this point. I hope you’re feeling better. I’m envious of your dry trails!

  2. Your “tuned down” week still sounds pretty great to me! Sorry you weren’t feeling well but it doesn’t sound like it slowed you down much. I actually can’t remember the last time I got sick (but now that I’ve written than, I’m sure I’ll be struck down immediately.) Anyway I hope you’re feeling better now!

  3. I’m not remembering my last bout with sickness…maybe Covid (almost two years ago)? And, my symptoms were very mild compared to what others seemed to have had. I swear it’s all of my outdoor cardio (year-round) that keeps me healthy. Sounds like you still had a decent week, at least in terms of mileage!

  5. Summer colds are so gross. I hope you are feeling better. =The last time I had anything was C19 after Thanksgiving (but I had the gastric distress version, not the coughing/sneezing/runny nose version). Before that… I couldn’t tell you.

I haven’t been to a farmer’s market in a while. Ours aren’t great in the summer because it’s too hot for fruits and veggies.
