Fitting It All In

Now that I’m back running, AND still wanting to keep up my weight lifting, I’ve come to a dilemma – how do I fit it all in? AND fit it all in before 6 a.m. when my day with the kiddos starts?

This week, I tried to fit it in. My days consisted of getting up early for a short weight-lifting workout, and then I did 30-40ish minutes of cardio on weight-lifting days. I’m still getting back into running, so that included a few miles along with some cycling.  I’m trying to get back into it slowly, but can’t wait until I feel healed enough and strong enough to get in a truly long run!

Here’s what the week looked like:

Sunday:  4.29 miles running, push ups –  I slept in until 7 and was able to get in a run during daylight! This was my first daylit run since Labor Day weekend and it felt great to be outside. I was sore and a little slower than I’d like, but I’m really just happy to be out there.

Monday: Chest and tricep workout, core workout, 20 minutes indoor cycling, 2.2 mile run, 2.1 mile walk –  It was pouring when I woke up to do my lifting, but I noticed that there would be about a 20 minute break in the rain at some point before 6 a.m., so I planned accordingly. I got in my chest and tricep workout, and then it was dry! I went for a 2 mile run, and just as I was finishing up I heard thunder. I made it home just in time to hop on the bike for a 20 minute cool down thankfully. I think got in about a 2 mile walk during my lunchbreak when the rain had finally stopped. It cooled down but turned into a nice fall day.

Tuesday: Shoulder and leg day, short core work, planks and pushups, 20 minutes on the bike, and 2.6 mile run – I was so torn on this workout. I really wanted to get in some more walking or running, but I also know that I need to take my recovery seriously! Luckily for me, the weather was icky out so I didn’t get in any walking, and I only had time for a shorter run. I was SLOW for some reason – my first mile was 1:30 seconds slower than my first mile last week!

Wednesday: Bicep and back day, plus core workout, 20 minutes on the bike, planks and 3.1 mile run!  Welp, my weights still haven’t come yet so TODAY was hopefully my last bicep day where I have to switch back and forth between arms instead of doing the workouts at once (I’ve been doing bicep curls, hammer curls, with one kettlebell at a time and then switching arms). My Prime Day weights and rack purchase hadn’t arrived, but the workout was still a good one.

Thursday: Leg workout, planks and push ups, 15 minutes indoor cycling, 2 miles running, 1.6 mile walk – It was another tiring Thursday! I made it out of bed late, but still was determined to do my leg workout. Oof. It was a rough one. I barely made it out for a run, and then I was dragging. Note to self – leg day and then a run is NOT EASY. But I’m still so grateful to be back running that I’m happy to get in even only 2 miles. Later I got in a short run at lunchtime to pick up dinner for the kiddos and my mother-in-law – B and I had plans to go out to a Boston College (and of course Guardians) game watch!

Friday: 6.3 miles walking, 15 minutes on the bike– I had a late start to my morning and had planned on taking a semi-rest day before a 5K race on Saturday. Luckily I still got in several miles of walking between walking to the bakery, and then taking a nature walk with the big kids (they were off school).

Saturday: 5K race, 2 miles walking and push ups – YAY for a race! It was my kids’ school’s annual 5K fundraiser, and the plan was that I would run it while B walked the 1 mile with the kids. The night before the race, however, FW decided he wanted to run it with me, so the day of the event I signed him up! We ran the race together. I’m proud of him – he did great! He whined half the time but still finished strong, and as usual, sprinted past me at the finish. It was a beautiful day and I had fun! It is a very crowded race but it’s a lovely occasion with a big party afterward, and we had fun going to that. The day was a busy one – it also included futsal tryouts for my oldest, piano lessons, a Halloween street festival/candy crawl at a local business district near us, AND my son and husband went to the Guardians/Yankees game.

Total: 17.34 miles running! Plus some walking, weight training, and indoor cycling.

It was a low mileage week for me but I’m still getting used to be back running and trying to take it easy.

  • Did you do any Halloween or fall activities this weekend?
  • Are you watching baseball playoffs right now? Who are you cheering for?

I am linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down.

  1. let’s go Mets!!!!!

ran 20 miles yesterday. Hope to lead peep today.

I was thinking of dropping my gym membership because I am stressed trying to fit it in.

  2. it does take some trial and error to fit it all in but you will figure it out. I have always done my runs and strength on opposite days. Glad you are feeling better!

  3. METS!

Yes, fitting it all in is sooooo hard. But, somehow people do it. I agree running after a leg workout is challenging. How is your toe feeling? Is it all healed? Very glad to see you back running!

  4. The struggle to fit it all in is real. I find that I am focusing more on running some weeks and more on strength other — maybe aim for a monthly balance instead of weekly?

It’s so great that your son ran the 5K with you — I hope he was proud of himself too!

  5. Wow, this sounds like a really busy week! I’m glad you want to keep up the weightlifting, it’s the way to go for optimal fitness!! I can imagine it’s hard to fit it all in though… can you do alternate days, with running every other day and strength on non-running days?

How fun that your son wanted to run with you! 5k is a long distance for a little kid. I hope he’ll keep that up!

  6. I’m so happy to see you sticking with the weight lifting! It really has helped me continue running–I’m not sure I’d still be able to do the miles without it.

How fun that your son wanted to run the 5k with you! I love it!
