Winter came in suddenly it seems. Yes, I know that it’s technically still fall for another few weeks, but we had snow after snow after snow this week, and the days were grey and bright, so I’m declaring it unofficially winter. Oh yeah, and we had a SNOW day!
Now that December is here, here’s a quick look at how November turned out:
- I was back at running full time after my broken toe and haven’t looked back!
- I’ve kept up my weight-training. I’m not moving up in weights, but still feeling strong and enjoying having something else to do when it’s cold and dark outside.
- I ran one race – a Turkey Trot 5K, but ran it with FW so I wasn’t going for any records. He came in 2nd in his age group even with stopping to walk!
- Total mileage: 154.86 miles, plus walking and indoor cycling (and aforementioned weightlifting)

And now, here’s what the week looked like. Including snow!
Sunday: 8.06 miles outside – I woke up to 40s and rain. And not just a drizzle, but pouring very extremely loud (aka orange on the radar) rain. I knew that this meant I’d likely not get out for a run, so I got a quick and short treadmill run in, a short bike ride, and then decided to start my weightlifting workout for Monday. No reason I can’t switch days, right?
Monday: chest and tri workout, 25 miles on the indoor bike, standing abs, 5.62 miles total run – 2.6 outside, 3.02 inside – I woke up to cold and snow and did not want to get out of bed. Still, I did my weights and hopped on the bike. I finally told myself to get outside for 2 miles and made it 2.6 with my Yaktrax to help with the snow on the ground. I later got in 3ish miles on the treadmill before my day started.

Tuesday: shoulder and leg workout, 5.54 total miles running (2.03 on the treadmill and 3.51 outside), standing ab workout, planks and push ups, 35 minutes on the bike, 1.5 miles walking – I stayed in bed a little too long again, and by the time I got outside, I only had time for about 3.5 miles, especially with the slick ground (I went a little slower to be careful in some spots). Because I was working from home, I was also able to get in 2 quick treadmill miles before starting my workday, bringing me up to 5.5+.
Wednesday: Bicep and back workout, 4.04 mile run, 20 minutes indoor biking, 1 mile walking – I admittedly didn’t get out of bed when I should have so I didn’t have time for much more than a 4 mile run after I got in my weights and biking. I didn’t want to go outside – I was tired and it was cold, so I stayed on the bike a little longer. But when I got outside, after a few miles I wished I had more time to run longer. Of course! I later got in a mile walk around the office with a coworker.
Thursday: snow day! 4 miles treadmill running, leg workout, push ups, 25 minutes indoor cycling – We woke up to blustery weather with snow and wind all around and the big kids had no school. I somehow managed to still get in a workout, but not as much as I would have if we had had school and nicer weather. Yes, I’m making excuses.
Friday: 4 miles running, 15 minutes indoor cycling – It continued to snow most of the night and we woke up to several inches and windy weather. I opted to run a few miles on the treadmill after (literally) warming up on the bike. Is it too soon to wish winter were over?
Saturday: 4.31 miles outdoor running and push ups – We had another early Saturday filled with a soccer game, piano, basketball practice, a play date and the movies, so I set my alarm early and got outside for a few miles before I had to wake FW up at 7:15. It wasn’t the best running conditions – I had my Yaktrax on again, but half the streets were clear and half the streets were icy and snowy (we got maybe 5 inches?), and the sidewalks were a mess, so I went from walking (on the ones where I was slipping) to running to walking to cautiously running and back and forth. I love my yaktracks but don’t love running with them on pavement so for half the run I was mad at myself for wearing them, but the other half was glad to have them on.
Total: 35.69 miles running! Plus weight training, and indoor cycling.
- Did you get hit by some snow this week?
- What do you do when it’s icy and snowy out – do you run in regular sneakers?
I am linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down.
