We made it through the first month of 2025!! Hooray!! That means we’re one month closer to spring, warmer days, lighter mornings, and hopefully sunnier days!
January turned out to be an okay month, all things considered. Despite the sub-zero temps, constant snow and ice, a few days of travel, and crazy weekends full of kid activities and more, I got in some great activity and stayed injury free! Hooray!
My monthly mileage included:
- 151.81 miles running, mostly indoor miles. I barely made it outside at all in January because our winter has been so unbearable! But this did include 2 runs in Florida that were really nice 🙂
- 2 days off. One earlier in the month when I felt like my hip was starting to get cranky (thankfully, after babying it for a few days I feel better), and one this week when I was sick.
But I’m getting ahead of myself about this week. Here’s how it looked:
Sunday: 9.1 treadmill miles plus start of chest and tri workout – I MADE IT OUTSIDE! For all January, I’ve been doing my Sunday long runs on the treadmill. I woke up and the streets looked semi clear (sidewalks were still icy and snowy), so I decided to see if I could get in some outdoor miles. Were the streets great? Honestly, there were still many patches of snow and ice, especially along the sides of the road where I was running, but I found a few streets to run on over and over again and somehow made it to 9 miles. In fact, I felt so good that if I had had more time I probably would’ve kept going! But we had plans – I had a volunteer event at the big kids’ school, plus a mass and open house and kid birthday party to get to.
Monday: 4.1 treadmill run, 20 minutes on the indoor bike, chest and tri workout, started shoulder and leg workout, 10 minute core workout, 3.16 miles walking – Getting out of bed was a STRUGGLE, so by the time I got up and did my weights, abs and bike, I only had time for a 5K on the treadmill. It was dark out, so I didn’t want to try running on the streets and not being able to see where the icy patches were. Later I got in some walking – including walking outside! It was sunny and in the 20s, and even though it was slippery at some spots, since I was walking and it was light out I was able to enjoy being outside for a little bit. And look – the nearby lake is frozen over!

Fun to see the blue skies, snow-covered lake and footprints on the frozen water
Tuesday: 5.5 miles treadmill run, 15 minutes on the bike, shoulder and leg workout, core workout, push ups, 2.18 mile walk – I got in my weight workout and decided not to run on the snow again and hit the treadmill. I got in 2 short runs – 3.5 miles before the kids woke up and then 2 miles after that. I also had enough time to get in my shoulder/leg work out, and start my leg day workout, do a core workout and push ups. I also decided to go outside for another lunch walk and got in 2ish miles. It wasn’t as sunny as it was on Monday, but it was warmer (30s) and I enjoyed being outside again for a longer walk.
Wednesday: REST DAY – Tuesday afternoon, I started feeling sick – I had some sort of stomach bug and then got feverish, which lasted through the night. I woke up Wednesday with a 100.3 degree fever in the morning, so I stayed in bed and worked from bed most of the day. I got in pretty much zero movement, which is exactly what my body needed.
Thursday: recovering still … 2.5 mi walk/run, some kettlebell swings and goblet squats, 3 mile walk – I was starting to feel back to normal but not 100%. So I took it relatively easy and did a run/walk on the treadmill, and just a few of my usual leg-day weights. Thankfully I had done most of the other workouts on Tuesday so the kettlebells and goblet squats were actually all I had left to do from my weekly plan. I got in a walk at lunchtime in the SUN, too! It was sunny and 40 degrees, which did wonders for me. Yay for Vitamin D!
Later in the day we walked around, got lunch and made it to our rescheduled massage appointments. The afternoon included some relaxing before heading out to dinner. Walking, weights, running and being outdoors? While it wasn’t the 70-80 degree weather usually in southern Florida at this time, it was great to escape the negative, freezing and snowy weather in Cleveland. Plus, I got in my first outdoor run in about 20 days — the streets around me have been just too icy/slippery for my liking so I’ve played it safe and my last outdoor run was January 4!
Friday: 5.12 mile run, outside! – I woke up to rain, but it was 40 degrees! We haven’t seen 40 degrees in the morning in Cleveland since … I dunno, but not all January! So I of course HAD to get in an outdoor run, regardless of how I was feeling. I put on a hat (bc I hate running with rain in my eyes) and made it outside for a few miles. It was slow- some parts of the road were still icy even with the rain, and the sidewalks were all a big sheet of ice, so there were places where I had to walk, but I made it 5 miles and it felt so good to be back outside!
Saturday: 5 miles treadmill run, 1.1 mile walk – It was our usual Saturday — soccer, 2 basketball games, ice skating, piano lessons and more, so I set my alarm to get in a treadmill run before it all started. It had sleeted overnight and I didn’t want to go out in the icy mess. I wasn’t feeling this run. I had stayed up late Friday night reading (I got the newest Fourth Wing book!), and was super stuffy from my residual cold, and I couldn’t seem to get into this run. I also managed a 1.1 mile walk as well.
Total: 31.32 miles running and weight training.
- When was the last time you were so sick you just stayed in bed?
- Any warm up in temps near you? It warmed up Friday and the snow actually nearly all melted! And then Friday night it snowed and sleeted so we were covered once again.
I am linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down.
