Back in the Grind

Well, I’m back in the swing of things and getting started with BUSY season in life and work! My work annual meeting is in May, school ends in May, spring and summer sports overlap in May, I have 2 trips planned, and it seems that every other possible event (ballet recital! piano recital! etc) is in May. So to all the parents out there – and everyone else who is busy – YOU GOT THIS!

But because it’s MAY here’s a quick look at April:

  • Kept up my weight training, 4x a week
  • Stayed uninjured
  • Ran 150+ miles again for the month
  • Got in lots of walking when I could – and finally some outdoor walks!

Sunday: 8 mile outdoor run, chest and tri workout, started shoulder and leg workout – I finally got some sleep! After back-to-back-to-back late nights, thanks to the fun from my brother-in-law’s wedding), I finally got a full night (7+ hours) of sleep! I woke up when GM woke us up, got outside and got in a run in the chilly weather. It was 40 degrees so I had pants, gloves and ear warmers, but it was perfect for running! I went out without any agenda – just wanted to run – and was feeling good. I probably would’ve run a little more if my parents hadn’t been in town and getting ready to leave that morning – I wanted to get home and see them before their drive back.

Monday: Finished shoulder and leg workout then did my back and bicep workout, and DR ab exercises. For my run, got in 5 miles with negative splits for a total of 5.03 miles, 2 miles walking – I was up and back at it! I had a 45-minute tempo run on the schedule for the week, and since my legs were feeling kinda good, I decided to try to do a negative split run for my speed work instead. My first mile was just under 10-minute miles, so I was wondering if I could keep it up – and I did!

Tuesday: Leg day and short core workout, plus 3 mile run and lots of walking – 4 miles outside and 1.6 on the treadmill while working. – After the “fast” run Monday and then leg workout, my legs were DEAD for my 3 miler. I did get in a few extra steps throughout the day walking – I got in an early morning walk to the bakery with GM (first time this year!), then some walking while working too.

Wednesday: 5.07 outdoor miles, 2 mile treadmill walk while working, 2.16 miles walking outside. My legs were feeling a little better and I was able to fit in a 5 mile run in perfect running weather (40 degrees). It warmed up to the 50s later and I was able to get in a nice short lunch walk as well. The turtles were out on the lake during my walk!

Thursday: 2.1 mile run, 1.86 mile outdoor walk, 2.5 mile walk while working – I had every intention of getting up and getting in a long run. I set my alarm for 3:30 a.m. But went to bed around 11. Well, I woke up and it was close to 5:30. WHAT? No idea how I slept through my alarm, but by the time I got out of bed, I only had time for a short run and some abs. I was able to get in a short outdoor walk with GM at 7 a.m. to grab breakfast (spy his bagel/cream cheese below) and then a few treadmill miles walking while working.

Friday: 12.11 outdoor miles run and 2.1 miles walk – I was so proud of this! We have a busy weekend ahead with 5 sporting events, a birthday party, piano lesson and a brunch so I wasn’t sure I’d have time to run long on the weekend. I got up early on Friday and got in 12 miles before work!

Saturday: 3.43 easy treadmill miles, ab workout, 1.3 mile walk – I felt surprisingly good after my 12 miler and wanted to get in an easy workout. With it raining out, and the kids being up early, I decided to run slowly on the treadmill while the kids watched a movie.

Total:  38.71 miles running plus weight training and some walks.

  • Is May madness for you too?
  • Spring races – yay or nay?

I am linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down.

  1. Excellent job on getting your long run completed on Friday before work – I remember needing to do that on occasion, too!

With adult sons and the grandchildren too young to be involved in competitive sports, plus the fact that I work part-time, there’s no mayhem over here (unless you count the number of doctor’s appointments I’ve had to fit into my schedule recently LOL).

  2. When you say you get up early to fit in a long run you get up EARLY! Way to get it done. Not a lot of mayhem here since my kids are grown but I do have a big work trip to prepare for …

  5. Well, I’m kind of glad you overslept on Thursday- I was feeling secondhand exhaustion at the thought of you waking up at 3:30 (although… you probably did that on Friday to get in that long run!) GREAT job getting everything in. To answer your question, May is mildly busy for us. Having just one kid at home, and she’s in high school, means things aren’t CRAZY. March was actually our insane month, and things have been manageable since then.

    Good luck with the madness!

  6. May is always super busy when you have little kids and sports and school stuff. Our May is going to be busy too in a good way! Wow that’s a lot of miles to log in a month
