Boston!

That’s right – Boston was trip #3 for May for me! This time, it was an airplane WITH the family and for vacation. This past week was spent out of routine again, but it was great and relatively active – I was able to get in some hotel gym time, some runs, and lots of walking! And even better, I got some time off work, was able to get SLEEP and had a wonderful time with the family.

It’s funny – I got in fewer miles this week than normal, but WAYYYY more steps! That’s because we did a lot of walking so even on the days I didn’t get in some real runs, I still got in plenty of steps. I also even got in some weights in the hotel gym, which was a nice surprise!

Proof of a good vacation πŸ™‚

Here’s what the week looked like:

Sunday: 3.1 mile hotel gym run on vacation plus some walking – We were in Boston for vacation and I was lucky enough to get in a short run at the hotel gym before we headed out for a day of lots of walking around Boston. We hit up some of my favorite tourist locations, including Fanueil Hall, the waterfront, the North End, and lots of the Freedom Trail.

Monday: 3.33 outdoor miles around Boston, then hotel gym weights and plenty of walking – I’m lucky that our hotel gym has a pretty decent set up with all the free weights I could need, and after my outdoor run, I got in some of my tricep and chest workout. We then did a lot of walking – we decided to hit up Boston College and show the kids around! We got off at the Reservoir T stop and then walked around the Reservoir before walking all around campus. We then walked back to Coolidge Corner for lunch, and then hopped on the T back to our hotel.

Tuesday: 4 mile outdoor run, shoulder workout, and walking around Boston – While B took the kids to the hotel pool, I got in a run along the waterfront, and then a short weight workout (Shoulder) before we started our day, which of course, included more walking. My parents arrived at the hotel to meet us for a few days, and they joined us on our daily adventure. That day it included a walk around Newbury Street, Boston Garden, and then at night walked to AND from Fenway for the Red Sox game.

Wednesday: Global Running Day! I ran 4 miles around some paths in Boston and it was great. – I found a waterfront path and took the opportunity to follow it and keep on going for a little ways. It was a fun way to explore where we were staying. I stopped at about 1.5 miles away, then had to open Google Maps to figure out how to get home.

Thursday: only a .5 mile run, full body lifting, and LOTS of walking! – We had an early start and walked 3ish miles to and from a museum to start our day, so I didn’t get in a run. Later it was 90 degrees (feels like 100!) so I decided to get in a short run, and instead focus on lifting some weights in the hotel gym before joining the family in the hotel pool. Even without going for a real run, I got in 18,000+ steps for the day.

Friday: 1.5 miles on the treadmill, some leg workout, and LOTS of walking again πŸ™‚ Β – Today was all about the last day of vacation. We started the day with an early T ride to catch a Duck Tour! Going to school in Boston I was familiar with the Duck Boats but had never been on one. It was a really fun way to get a tour of the city with the family! We then walked around again to see some of the other sites and retrace our steps. We went back again to Fanueil Hall (yes, our 3rd time this week lol) and got some souvenirs. FW also got to be in a street dancing show – outside the hall they always have people performing for money and they chose FW to be part of the show. I’m proud of him – he danced and acted with them!

Saturday: 3.1 miles before our trip back – I was able to get up before the kids got up and run outside along the water on a nice path for a short while. I even saw some geese and a giant turtle on my run! We had to leave for the airport earlyish, so I was grateful to get in a quick 5K before we hit the road (a train to a shuttle to a bus to the airport!) to head back to Cleveland. Once back in town, we ended up getting home in time to go to a 6-year-old birthday party and I was able to walk there! It was less than 1 mile there and back, but felt good to get in some steps after our trip home.

Total:Β  19.68 miles running plus weights and LOTS of walking!

  2. looks a super fun trip with the family to Boston. Glad you got in some extra rest. Non exercise extra steps are the best!

  3. It sounds like you guys had a great trip, and how fun that your parents joined you for a few days! I’ve been to Boston twice, both times to run the marathon.

  5. Wow, you had some really nice runs! The trip sounds fun, and I’m impressed that your kids did all that walking! If we had done a trip like that when our kids were little, it would have been the Complaining Olympics. Glad you had such a good time and got some sleep!!!

  6. My husband went to boarding school and college in Boston so we have spent a fair amount of time visiting there. It’s a great city! It reminds me a bit of London, with lots of history! Great restaurants too. Well done getting in so much exploring and steps and runs! And your kids are getting so big!

  7. That’s a lot of steps! Looks like an enjoyable week for you. Isn’t it nice when a hotel has a functional gym? That dumbbell selection looks great.

We’re going to Sweden next week! It’s mainly for my husband’s cycling event but of course we’re going to see friends and family and enjoy some time with them too.

  8. What a fun few weeks!

I’m technically living out of a suitcase right now but we have two trips planned in July! I cannot wait.

Boston is a great, incredibly walkable city. i’ve been there a few times and it’s always fun.
