Summer Running

The title of this blog post should definitely be sung to the tune of “Summer Loving” (Summer Nights) from Greece. Do you remember that movie? Because it’s what came to my mind as I was typing the name of the post.

While it doesn’t truly feel like SUMMER here yet (read: not too hot or humid), I have been loving the summer schedule! Kids are off school, which means I no longer have to be done running and showered/ready for my day by 6:15. I get to sleep in more than an hour (!) and have been enjoying the additional hour of sleep plus the daylight during my runs. This week, while feeling the pain of being back from a wonderful vacation, I was so happy to be able to run outside during daylight and run some new routes at home. There’s something about running during daylight to brighten your mood!

Here’s what the week looked like:

Sunday: 8.04 outdoor mile run plus chest and tricep workout, abs – It was our first full day back from vacation and I woke up to misty/on and off rain, but I was determined to get in a longer-ish run before a day of laundry, playing kid chauffer, unpacking, grocery shopping/meal planning, dinner with family and plans to see friends in town.

Monday: 5.14 outdoor miles, plus shoulder and legs and ab workout, 2 miles walking– We had friends over until 10 p.m.ish on Sunday night, so I didn’t get to bed until late. BUT I was able to wake up after 5 am (late!) and do my weights and then run outside during the sunlight, so all was good! I also got in 2 miles walking during my day as well.

Saw this guy on my run – he was BIG!

I was happy to be able to take a picture – it’s usually too dark for a watch photo or any photos!

Tuesday: 5.07 mile outdoor run, back/bicep workout and start of leg workout, 2 miles walking – Another day of working out a little later and getting in an outdoor run! This day I stayed in bed a little too long and ended my workout a little too late… so I had to hustle getting ready for work! I’m going to have to get used to my summer schedule!

Wednesday: 5.09 mile outdoor run, finished leg workout – I got out of the house a little earlier for my run and the schedule seemed to work okay. I’m still learning what summer schedule with weight lifting works out to be like (I didn’t start lifting weights until last September), but regardless, it’s SO nice to get up later! The sun was out for the run and I enjoyed stopping to take a photo of it rising in the sky.

Thursday: 7.03 mile run/walk – I was dragging today! I had to stop and walk a few times — but while I was walking I enjoyed seeing several turtles! I think I saw three different big (snapping?) turtles on my run, including one perhaps laying eggs?

Friday: 8.19 miles running outside, plus 2.75 miles on the treadmill – I was feeling this run – in a good way! And because it was Friday, I had a little extra time to get in a longer run and loved it. I also got in 2.75 miles on the treadmill while working. I had some courses to take and a 1:1 meeting that I too while walking!

Saturday: Chest and tricep workout, 4 mile run, 1.3 mile walk – inside – I woke up to pouring rain. Actually I woke up to a “drip drip” noise as there was a leak coming into our bedroom from our third floor window. Oof. Needless to say, I ran inside and did a short weight workout. My legs were tired from all the miles during the week but as always, a little movement felt good.

Total:  42.55 miles running plus weights and walking!

  • Does your schedule change during summer?
  • Do you often see wildlife during your runs?

  1. I’m sure you’re loving your summer schedule! My schedule no longer changes since our sons are grown and have long been out of the nest. How cool to see so many turtles on your run. I see mostly deer and rabbits, but when I go out super early before daybreak I might see a fox or skunk.

  2. Even though it’s been years since my boys lived at home, I still love that ‘freedom feeling’ of summer. I still get up early–old habits are hard to break- and that helps me beat the heat. Although this year has not been very warm!

Love that you saw the turtle! I do love seeing wildlife on my runs, as you know!

  3. You logged some solid miles this week! It’s nice to get up when it’s light outside, but I usually regret sleeping in in the summer because then it’s that much warmer out.

My summer schedule means if I’m 5 min late getting out the door I don’t get stuck behind the neighborhood school bus. 😉

  4. I am glad to read that you get more sleep on your summer schedule! I’ve often wondered how you function on such little sleep and high activity lol. I used to love our summer schedules when the kids were younger 🙂

  6. Yes! I can get up an hour later now as well and I love it!!! When I’m out on the trails I see turtles occasionally (I always call them my “running spirit animal” lol).

It’s nice to run in the daylight, right???

  7. Welcome to summer schedules:-) I can totally attest to how great it is to see the sunrise in the early hours of summer !

  8. you certainly run a lot of miles. What are you training for?l

my schedule is the same. But the weather is different. When it’s cold I run after work. When it’s hot I run before work.

  11. Look at that guy! I saw a ton of wildlife this week (deer, bunnies, injured owl, etc), and it always makes me happy.

Sadly, summer means getting up earlier. It’s too hot to wait for daytime hours, so I just suck it up and try to get out there.

  13. My schedule didn’t change much at all when it was summer and my kids were young. We dropped them off at daycare prior to work during the school year. During the summer they went to summer camp at the same daycare, so it was still the same time because I was working full time! I have a much more flexible schedule now, but I still like to get out there early for my workouts. So nice to start the day energized!

I now see why you don’t get much sleep… you have quite an early wakeup time! Kudos to you for fitting it all in. Happy, healthy mom = happy family!
