2 Swims and Some Runs

I did something new this week – I got in TWO swims! My kids had swimming lessons each night, so two nights I was able to get in some short swims while they were at lessons. It was nice to do something else to supplement my running and weights, and even though my swims were short, I was proud of my attempt to get in some laps.

Otherwise, it was a pretty standard workout week – here’s what it looked like:

Sunday: 6.2 miles (4 outdoors, 2.2 indoors), 1.5 mile treadmill walk, plus shoulder and leg workout – It was Father’s Day, which meant B was leaving the house by 5 a.m. to go golfing with his dad and siblings. I knew I wanted to get in an outdoor run, so I woke up at 3 to get outside. Unfortunately, I stayed in bed a little too long and wanted to be home by 4:45 so I only got in four miles outside. But after B left, I hopped on the treadmill for a slow 2.2 miles and some weights. I was done with my Sunday workout by 6 a.m.!

Got up early to run so we could celebrate this guy for Father’s Day later!

Monday: 6.23 outdoor miles, plus back and bicep workout, legs and ab workout, 13 minutes of swimming laps– My morning was pretty standard with an outdoor run plus weights – but at night, I got in a short swim! My kids had swim lessons and I found myself with about 15 minutes to kill during lessons so I started doing some laps. I don’t swim often, but it felt good to get in some different type of movement than usual. Plus, I was proud of myself for getting into the cold (for me) pool. I hate being cold and wet!

Tuesday: 5.19 mile outdoor walk/run, finished leg workout, .6 miles walking, 2.25 miles walking outside, core workout, 800 m pool swim – I woke up and it said it was going to rain in 30 minutes, so instead of starting with my weights, I got outside for a STEAMY run. It was warm and very humid, and my legs were tired (likely from getting in 40+ miles last week, which I don’t do often). I walked/ran and then got in a walk at lunchtime too. That night baseball and softball were cancelled due to thunderstorms, but the storm went away just in time for swim lessons so I got in some more lap swimming, too! It was slow and short, but a nice way to end the day.

Wednesday: 6.02 mile outdoor run – I slept through my alarm, but still had time to get in a run. I should say “run” — because it was a run/walk. It was hot and my legs were tired again! I ran a few miles but ended up walking as well. Later at swim lessons, B swam during GM/LM’s lesson and I got ready to swim during FW’s …. but as soon as he hopped into the pool for his lesson, I heard thunder. I stayed out of the water and sure enough, a few minutes later they made everyone get out of the pool for the night.

Thursday: 7.25 mile outdoor run/walk, core workout, 2.3 miles treadmill walking while working- It was another humid day! It wasn’t that hot (around 70) but it was 95% humidity or something like that so I was sopping wet when I got home from my run.

So sweaty!

Friday: 9.02 miles running outside, some abs and chest/tri workout – It was in the 60s during my run, which was such a big change from the previous days and it was great! And because it was Friday, I had a little extra time to get in a longer run and it made my morning. I also got in 2.75 miles on the treadmill while working. I had some courses to take and a 1:1 meeting that I too while walking!

Saturday: 4.14 mile outdoor run, ~2ish mile walk – I got in a 4 mile run and it was hot and humid again! I again saw a giant snapping turtle – this one was sitting on a pile of mulch, barely moving, so I wonder if it was laying eggs again?

It was still nice to get out there, but I only had time for 4 because I wanted to be up and showered before my daughter’s softball practice at 9. My parents were in town, so we also got in a ~2 mile walk to a bakery and the library with the kids in the morning.

Total:  44.05 miles running plus weights, walking and some short swims

  • Is the weather heating up near you?
  • Do you ever swim laps?

  1. We are in for a big heat wave this week but right now it’s not too bad — mostly because the humidity isn’t as high yet.

I haven’t been in a pool in ages, but it looks so refreshing!

  2. Good for you getting some swimming in! I am not a lap swimmer, but I do love being in the water. It feels great in the summer.

Looks like we both had snapping turtle sightings this week!

  3. Oh wow, Melissa, you were on fire on Sunday morning! Doesn’t it feel good to get your workout finished and out of the way so early? Good for you for swimming while your children were in lessons. I’m impressed! I’m not a very strong swimmer so I’ve never swum laps as a form of exercise.

  4. What a great week! I used to swim laps but haven’t done it in years. It does feel really good to move your body like that after all the running. I’m envious of your Friday run- 60s is my very favorite running weather. We won’t be in the 60s again here until… probably November. Sigh!

  5. Great week! I wonder if that turtle is laying eggs! That would be cool!

I don’t swim often but I do like it. The last few houses I’ve stayed at have had pools but every time I’ve tried to go in, the storms started. Bad timing. I will try again this weekend.

Hope you all had a nice Father’s Day!
