H-O-T in C-L-E

Welp, like a lot of people in the US, we had a HEAT WAVE this week and it was HOT IN CLEVELAND! It was hot and humid, but we made the most of it. Did I get in shorter runs than usual? OH YES. Fewer walks? YES. But I still got in some running and lifting, plus a few days of fun with the kids to celebrate my son’s birthday!

Here’s what the week looked like:

Sunday: 5.05 indoor run plus shower and legs workout, finished chest and triceps – It was STEAMY out when I got up (90%+ humidity and already 80+ degrees), so I opted to run on the treadmill for the first time in a while. I debated getting outside, but was glad I made the choice to run inside and lift weights.

Monday: 4 treadmill miles, plus back and bicep and ab workout, 2ish miles walking– It was my son’s birthday and we had plans to celebrate, so I took off work, but still got up early to get in a run. Again, it was steamy out so I hopped on the treadmill and lifted weights. We took a walk later and those 2 miles were HOT – I’m glad I was just walking and not running! That night, I was lucky we had swimming lessons and the kids were able to beat the heat in the pool.

Happy birthday to my oldest!!

Tuesday: 3.5 treadmill miles, leg workout – Another day of indoor miles, and this day I really took it easy. After my leg workout I was pooped, and I only had time for 3ish treadmill miles. This was my shortest run in a while!

It was this hot at 5:30 a.m. so I kept it indoors again.

Wednesday: 6.01 mile outdoor run in the a.m., 1100 yard/meter (?) lap swim at night- It was only “feels like in the 80s” when I woke up, so I was so happy to get in an outdoor run! It was slow and I stopped for a few minutes to get water halfway through, but I was so happy to be back outdoors. I actually would’ve run longer if I hadn’t had to be in the office early for a video shoot. That night, I got in a long (for me) swim during swimming lessons! This is the longest I’ve swum laps since I remember. Then I got in some fun time in the pool with my youngest – he loves the pool!

Thursday: 6.21 mile run – It was another humid and hot day but at least again it was “feels like in the 80s” when I woke up. I enjoyed getting outside and getting in a run before our day. The day was busy! I took off in the afternoon and we went to the Guardians game to celebrate my son’s birthday with a few of his friends. Then, LM had a softball game, and then my son had a baseball game that started at 8:15 pm! It was a late night!

First of 3 baseball/softball games for the day!

It was HOT at the game!

Friday: 6.22 miles running outside – Oof, this was a rough workout. Not sure if it was because I went to bed after 11 (see aforementioned baseball game), or because it was so humid/hot still, but I did end up walking a few times. Even with the walking, I was glad to still get in the 10 minute/mile range.

Saturday: Chest and tricep workout, 5.35 mile run/walk, .75 mile walk – inside – I set my alarm early because we were supposed to have an early softball game, but the fields were too wet to play. I got in a run before everyone was up (and before they cancelled softball). After the game was cancelled, I got in some weights and a short treadmill walk to cool.

Total:  36.35 miles running plus weights and walking!

  • Are your summer evenings filled with sports/swimming? Or are they more relaxed?
  • Did it heat up for you this week?

I am linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down.

  1. Wow, that was a late night Thursday. My kids didn’t do summer sports at that age, and when my son did summer lacrosse in high school, they only had games on weekends — but practices in the afternoon/evening.

    Happy birthday to your son!

  2. Happy Birthday to your son! It sounds like a really fun week. It seems like it was hot everywhere this week. I’ve been doing some of my runs on the treadmill at the gym- so much more pleasant than outside.

Our evenings are pretty relaxed! My daughter does summer band a couple nights a week, but that ends at 9 pm (and even that is a little late for me- I like to be in bed reading by then!)

I hope you get a cool down this week.

  3. Wow! What a week! Happy birthday to your kiddo!

I try to ensure our nights are a little more quiet. A is starting back to band camp, but that doesn’t involve us, and usually they are out by 8PM. Since i get up so early, I just start shutting it down around 7PM. We went to a movie at 7:40PM this week, and I have no idea how I made it through!

I’m glad you can get it so much swim time! I don’t love swimming when it’s hot like this. The water just becomes a bacterial soup (pool and ocean) and I can’t do it. I do like visiting the springs, but we just haven’t had a chance this year.

  4. I think we all “enjoyed” the heat wave last week! My summer evenings are much more reed these days, but they were busy with kids’ activities when everyone was younger. I actually kind of miss those days sometimes…

  5. Your kids are adorable.

Yes, we had a heat wave – almost 100 Monday and Tuesday… still humid but cooler since.

Empty nester so evenings are for ME!

  6. Wow, that is HOT! Well done on the swim, its such great exercise!!

Tough hot runs are a part of summer I suppose! They’ll make us stronger for fall races.
