Not Ready For July

Summer truly goes by too fast. June is already over, which means we’re almost halfway through! Since it’s my favorite season, I wish it would slow down. I am not ready for July – despite loving it so much!

June was a pretty good month mileage/running wise. Some highlights:

  • Sleeping in! Though I’m still tired — probably because I’m going to bed a lot later with summer sports, etc.
  • Continuing my weight training, even on vacation
  • Swam some laps! This is a big deal for me – it’s stepping outside my comfort zone by (1) swimming and (2) working out at night, which I hate
  • Total mileage for the month: Ran 157.14 miles

Sunday: 10.1 mile outdoor miles!

We had NO PLANS Sunday morning (woohoo!) so I could go out and run as far as I wanted. This hasn’t happened in a while. This was my first double-digit run since I ran the Cleveland half in May! I’m not gonna lie – it was tough. I don’t typically drink, and Saturday I had a beer and then later in the day some of a margarita (we went out to dinner and the waiter gave us a free LARGE margarita!), plus we had gone out to dinner at a Mexican restaurant and I was feeling the intake of sodium, etc. Anyway, let’s just say I wasn’t feeling the best on Sunday morning. BUT I did feel fine overall, my body felt like it had fueled enough, but I was sluggish. And it was hotter than I thought – though it was cooler than it has been, it wasn’t cool yet. Anyway, I made it outside and ran more than I anticipated and am proud of my 10 miles!

Monday: 4.01 miles, plus shoulder, leg, back and bicep and ab workout, 2ish miles walking.

It was nearly 90% humidity when I woke up, and my body was tired, so these four miles were a struggle. I stopped and walked during miles 3 and 4, so my pace was slow and I only had time for four miles. But I was still proud of getting in the four miles. I finished with a mile cooldown on the treadmill (walking) and then a 1 mile walk at lunchtime. I also got in two days of weights – swimming lessons were cancelled so I was able to get in my back and bicep workout during that time.

Tuesday: 7.03 outdoor miles, leg workout, core workout, 1 mile walk

I set my alarm early because I wanted to have some extra time to walk, but of course time flew by and I didn’t have the time I wanted. It was humid again and I found myself walking quite a bit, so I only had time for the 7 outdoor miles and leg workout before heading into work. I did get in a 1 mile walk later in the day.

Wednesday: 7.03 mile outdoor run, core work, ~4 miles walking, plus 1,000 yard or meter (?) swimming

Wednesday was an ACTIVE day! It was cooler again and since I had done double weight lifting earlier in the week and on Saturday, I had nothing on my strength list but core work! So I got in a core workout, then got in my run, plus about 1.6 miles of walking before starting my day. Then, I got in a 2+ miles walk at lunchtime, and a swim during swimming lessons! I have no idea how long the lap lane in the pool is, so I did around 1,000 meters or yards of swimming – about 20 minutes, which is long for me.

Thursday: 7.05 mile run, 2.65 mi walk, 1,200 yard swim

It was cooler (only in the 70s!) when I woke up, so I enjoyed a cooler run. My legs weren’t feeling as tired as usual and I got in a lot less walking than the previous few days’ workouts. I enjoyed getting outside and also getting in a walk at lunchtime – it warmed up but it was a nice break in my day. That night I also got in a swim during swimming lessons.

Friday: Fourth of July! 7.16 mile run (mostly stroller run)

I woke up early to an extremely GM who didn’t want to sleep by himself, and then when we finally got out of bed, he didn’t want me to leave for a workout. I know I could’ve just waited until B got up and gone out for a run, but I decided to make due and instead, take GM on a stroller run with me. We ran/walked 6.5 miles, and then when we got back, he wanted to run around the block with me so we ran together. Then, my daughter wanted to run around the block so we ran too – in total I got in 7.16 miles. Then, we played pickleball as a family! It was a ton of fun. Then we headed out to B’s cousin’s house for their annual Fourth of July rib cookoff! The kids had fun in the pool, and his cousin has chickens so we also made it home with some eggs.

My running buddy:)

Pickleball ready!

In addition to the ribs, we brought cookies

Saturday: NO RUNNING! This was my first day not running since I tapered before my half in May. I still got in some activity — 4.49 mile walk with weighted vest on an incline, chest and tricep weights workout, 1.5 mile walk, 1,500 yard (?) swim

I woke up with GM again and decided to attempt going for a run – my legs were TIRED so I made it all of .2 miles before deciding to just stay home. I did some walking on the treadmill at an incline and lifted weights while GM watched some PBS kids. I got in a walk later in the day, and then we all went to the pool. While the kids swam, I got in my LONGEST swim ever (or at least that I can remember in my adult life). It was only 30ish minutes, but I was still proud.

Total:  42.46 miles running plus swimming (3x), weights and walking!

  • How was your June?
  • Is it still HOT near you? It cooled down near us for a few days but is hot again — and I don’t mind it at all!

  1. You had a great week! I remember those stroller running days… fun times.

I know what you mean about summer. I don’t like the summer weather (since I live in Florida) but I do like the relaxed schedule and getting up IN THE DAYLIGHT! I don’t want that part of it to end.

Your cookies look really yummy. Sounds like you had a fun holiday!

  2. Total agreement on summer going TOO fast! My two older kids have July birthdays (the daughter was yesterday), so our summers always seemed to go especially fast once July hit. Great job with all that swimming!

  3. It must be so tricky to fit all the workouts in between kids and more. You’re so good at getting everything done and using every moment.

My June was super busy and with some bumps in the road in terms of fitness, but i’ve had some good moments for sure! I’m like you – I love summer and July is coming on way too fast.

  4. glad you are able to sleep in a bit more over the summer. It sure helps! I used to love lap swimming and I plan to get back to it when we get home as well. Our summer is flying by with lots of travel

  6. Looks like such a fun and exhausting week! But I love all the fun you have with your kids. I miss those days!

Great job on getting the 10 miler done, even though you weren’t feeling great. Sometimes those are the best runs because you have to dig so deep. Looks like this week is going to be less hot–hopefully that means some good runs are ahead!
