Wonderful Weather

I cannot complain about this week’s weather. Was it hot some days? Yes. But it truly felt like summertime and I loved it! I kept to my outdoor runs and the sun rising, and I felt the endorphins all week long. I wish I could bottle up this feeling come winter when it’s cold and dark and I despite the mornings.

Again this week I got in some good runs – a long run, a few regular runs – some walks, my lifting, and also another swim! This is truly the most swimming I’ve done in my life for working out and although I don’t crave it (like I do running), I’m glad I’m keeping it up. Here’s how it looked:

Sunday: 10 miles, outdoors, plus shoulder and leg workout.

All holiday weekend I kept telling myself (and B) that I wanted to do a long run. Did I do one on Friday? No. Did I do one on Saturday? No. But Sunday morning, I woke up feel refreshed (albeit hot) and got in a 10 miler. It was hot and I was sluggish, but all day I felt great.

Monday: 5.01 miles, 4.4 in memory of Amy Toth Dahl, plus back and bicep and ab workout, started leg day too.

A few years ago, one of my running friends’ sisters passed away unexpectedly. And since then, she has hosted a run in her memory on her birthday, as well as starting a scholarship drive. I was unable to go to the run in her honor on Sunday, but did dedicate 4.4 miles to her on Monday, the day after what would’ve been her 44th birthday (it’s so so sad). Running in someone’s memory always puts things into perspective. Instead of feeling tired/dragging/whiny on this humid morning, I really was grateful to be healthy and out there running.

Tuesday: 5.32 outdoor miles, leg workout, core workout

I got in my leg workout and core workout, and then got outside for a run! We had an early day at home so I didn’t run as long as I would’ve liked, but it was cooler out and despite my legs feeling tired, my body felt good to run in the cooler (70s) weather.

Wednesday: 7.02 mile outdoor run, 1 mile walk on the treadmill while working, 2ish miles during lunch and then 1,200 yard(?) swim

I woke up Wednesday sleeeepy. I had stayed up late Tuesday night after FW’s playoff baseball game (they won!) and then was up reading my book (Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid). So I pushed my Wed. alarm back a little bit, but was still able to get in a run. I didn’t get to do as much activity as the previous week or I had wanted to – because camp was cancelled! We had an email Wednesday morning about a brown out at the school where camp is, so the big kids were unexpectedly with me at home. They’re pretty self sufficient these days now that they’ve just turned 7 and 9, but it meant I couldn’t go for a long solo lunch walk as planned. But, I did get in a little under 2 miles with the big kids at lunch – we walked to a bakery and picked up some croissants and then a bagel shop for lunch. That night at swim lessons, I got in a 20 minute swim, too! I honestly didn’t want to get in the water but as soon as I did I knew it was a good idea. Swimming and workout out at night are two things I don’t tend to do, so I’ve been proud of doing that and stepping out of my comfort zone.

Thursday: 7.02 mile run, .65 mi walk

It was warmer again, but I wanted to get in a faster run so I could be home in time for swim lesson registration. I felt like I was booking it, but only finished at just under 10 minute/mile pace. Phew! My legs and body were tired – those paces felt like nothing a few months ago. Not sure how I have gotten so slow, but it did feel good to go “fast” and get in a good workout.

Friday: 8.03 mile run

I was TIRED this morning! We were up late Thursday – my son had a baseball game that ended around 10:30 p.m., my youngest wasn’t feeling well when we got home, and then I had to get up early for a dr. appt. Needless to say, this wasn’t my best run but I was still pleased with the effort, knowing how tired I was and how slow I felt. That night, we held a belated birthday gathering for my daughter! She wanted to watch Wicked in the backyard with a few friends, and it was the perfect night to do so.

Saturday: 3.34 mile run, chest and tricep workout, 2 mile walk with weighted vest on an incline

B and I had stayed up late to watch an outdoor movie after the kids went to bed, so I didn’t get to bed until nearly 2 a.m.! So yes, I was tired again, but at least I could sleep until 7:30 when GM woke up. I got in a short run outside and then finished up with a walk and weights on the treadmill.

Total:  45.82 miles running plus swimming, weights and walking

  • Have you seen Wicked the movie?
  • Do you use a weighted vest?

I am linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down.

  3. Oof that is a lot of running and strength work, and not a lot of sleep! I don’t know how you do it. But- sounds like you’re enjoying your summer. Happy birthday to your daughter, and those cookies look YUMMY!!!

  4. I finally watched Wicked on the plane in May and really loved it. Now I can’t wait for Part II. Your cookies are perfect!

Atmosphere was hard to put down!

  5. Good for you for getting that 10-mile run completed over the holiday weekend! It’s easy to keep pushing it back only to never get it done.

Happy 7th birthday to your daughter! How fun that she wanted to watch Wicked at her party. I haven’t seen the movie, but we saw the play at The Kennedy Center in DC.

  6. A memorial run sounds like such a beautiful way to celebrate someone’s life, and like you say show gratitude for health.

I’ve been loving the hot weather we’ve had. Now it’s going to rain much of the week.

    Happy birthday to your daughter!

  7. You are doing great with all those swims! Such a great means of cross-training (too bad I’m not a fam of it for myself, LOL). Those Wicked cookies look great! I use my weighted vest on occasion for walking, but need to get in the habit of using it more frequently.

  8. I love how you’re sticking to the weight lifting and now swimming! It’s so great to mix it up. The pool feels great this time of year. I don’t have a weighted vest but have considered getting one. If my knee takes longer to heal than I want, I will definitely purchase it for my walks.

The Wicked cookies turned out so cute!

  9. Great mileage AND mixup of activities! You’re rocking it!

What a fun party. I am obsessed with Wicked. I liked the book and was very meh on the musical, but the movie changed me. I sobbed through the first part and I don’t know if I’m ready for the second. The cookies are too cute and I’m glad the birthday girl had fun!

  10. Weight lifting and swimming – you are inspiring. And getting in those runs.

I want to try dead lifts… Swimming and biking are big NOs.

Yes I loved Wicked!! HB to your daughter.

and yes, I’ve considered getting a weighted vest… everyone now seems to have one.
