Feeling Fall-ish

Let me start by saying fall is NOT here yet. I’m a summer lover, so I will be the first to correct you and say that summer is still here (at least for another week or so officially). But it has started feeling like fall here. The temperatures are crisper, the days are darker, and I’m in denial!

It’s the perfect running weather — but as you know, I’m being careful with my hip and not really running (instead mostly walking with some running thrown in), and it’s chilly for walks! I don’t love it, especially since my hands are cold. But it’s feeling like fall, and with that, we have had a ton of fun things going on, which I do love! So with fall around the corner, I am enjoying the fun festivals, celebrations and more fun that comes with it.

Here’s what the week looked like:

Sunday: 5/1 miles walking (2 outdoor and 3.1 indoor), 10 minutes indoor bike, started back and bicep workout

My goal was to get in a long Sunday walk, but I woke up to pouring rain. So I started my day with a back/bicep workout .. then I saw it was about to stop raining so I went outside for a walk/run (mostly walking with a little running) — and then about a mile from home I saw it was going to rain again, so I bolted back home and finished on the treadmill.

The day included a soccer game for FW and an open house where he takes music lessons. While it had rained on my run in the morning, the afternoon was sunny and chilly – it was beautiful and really felt like fall!

Monday: 2.18 m outdoor walk/run, 15 minutes indoor cycling and leg day with some push ups/sit ups; then 2.28 m stroller walk and 1.75 mi treadmill walk with incline.

I once again woke up to good running weather, but wasn’t running! I did run/walk a little bit for my 2.18 miles – between my morning walk and walk with GM, I ended up running about a mile total, and walking the rest. I split up .1-.2 miles of running within all my walking. I later got in some treadmill walking (slow!) on an incline.

Tuesday: 20 minutes cycling, 1 mile SLOW treadmill running, 1.75 mile treadmill walk on incline, 1.84 mile stroller walk with GM to vote!, weighted core workout and push ups, then .38 mi jog with LM

On Monday, I had heard a story about a woman who was running in our local metropark system (where I used to run before we moved) and was attacked while running. She’s injured, but okay – but I was still shook up and decided to play it safe by getting in an indoor workout. I HATE that women have to be careful doing what they love and can’t just run safely, regardless of what time of day you go, or what you’re wearing, or even who you’re with! I know I’ll be back outside for my walks soon, but I just wasn’t up for it this morning in the dark. Later, after the big kids went to school, I took GM with me on a walk to my polling place to get in some quick voting before work. That night, I picked up LM from soccer practice and she and I decided to run one lap around the park where her practice was – it was .38 miles and my hip felt alright during it.

Wednesday: 22 minutes cycling, 1 mile walking on treadmill with an incline, 2.4 mile stroller walk, weighted standing core workout, push ups + sit ups, 1.5 miles on the treadmill while working

I once again decided to workout indoors when it was dark out, and got in a short/slow run and cycling. I notice the twinge in my hip as I got to the end of the run so I took it super easy and vowed NOT to run on Thursday. I also got in some core work, and more walking with GM outside as well as while working.

Thursday: Chest and tricep workout, 25minutes on the indoor bike, 1.5 mile walk on the treadmill on an incline, 4.86 miles walking outside (split between a lunch walk and stroller walk for GM)

I had vowed not to run, so I didn’t! I instead focused on walking, cycling and weights for the day.

Friday: Shoulder and leg workout, 20 minutes on the indoor bike, 1.5 miles on the treadmill on an incline, 1.83 mi walk with GM in the stroller, then 2.67 mile lunchtime walk

I again told myself not to run. So again, weights, cycling, and walking. See a pattern yet? I did get in some informal walking later in the day, as FW was in the local school’s homecoming parade (he marched with his soccer team) and we walked to and from the parade, and during the route somewhat to follow him. It was a gorgeous day and perfect for being outside!

Saturday: 3.6 miles on the treadmill – with 2 of them being a slow, slow walk, plus 20 minutes on the indoor bike, some abs + push ups

We had a lot of plans ahead for our day – it was B’s birthday so we had friends coming over at around noon for a bbq; GM had a birthday party from 10-noon, and LM had a soccer game at 2. So, I: got up at 6:30 to get in a workout before the kids woke up. The second GM got up a little after 7, I got him out of bed and ready for the day without B waking up – then I brought him into the basement while I did the bike for a bit. It would’ve been nice to go for an outdoor run, but that was all the time we had before starting our day! It was fun and busy, which I always enjoy. And, good news – during my extremely slow 2 miles, my hip felt okay! Does that mean I should run on Sunday? Or take it easy?

Some questions for you:

  • Would you try to run on Sunday or take it easy after running a few miles on Saturday?
  • Any fall celebrations coming up for you?

I am linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down.

  1. It’s so hard not to run this time of year! A couple of years ago, when I broke my ankle, I couldn’t run even though it felt fine. It was tough.

Have you considered run/walk intervals? For me, those are always my go-to when I’m coming back from injury. You still get the satisfaction of a run withouth the continuous pounding. Just a thought!

    Beautiful family photo!

  2. I would not run today. It seems like you’re in a pattern where your hip feels a little better so you run, but you’re not giving it enough time to heal. I’d suggest taking a minimum of two weeks off before trying to run again, and then only run for half a mile or less (maybe even just a quarter mile)and see how it feels the next day.

Happy belated birthday to your hubby!

      • My further advice would be if you even feel a little twinge when you try a very short run after taking two weeks off to take another week off. Keep repeating that until you can run with no pain during the run and the days afterward. Once you have no pain, ease back into running with short runs or short run/walks. You’re young and have years of running ahead of you, you’re not going to lose as much running fitness as you think. In the meantime, keep up the walking, cycling, and strength training as long as none of those cause you any pain.

  3. glad to see you are giving yourself time to heal before jumping back in full force. No, I would not run today if you ran yesterday and are coming off of an injury. Risk vs reward. That’s my 2 cents. Happy birthday to your husband

  5. Don’t run today! Do every other day until your hip feels solid again (I can picture you just returning from a run right now though, ha ha… I know how hard it is to lay off, especially when the weather is nice!)

Yum- those cookies look delicious and very fall-ish! I’m in a fall frame of mind, even though our weather is still hot and humid down here.

  6. It’s good to hear your hip is starting to behave a bit better! I would wait a day or two before running again.

I know what you mean about summer ending. I’m sort of in denial too although I’m enjoying this early part of the autumn. But I still go for my walks in shorts and when I have to put on long pants I’ll be sad.

Not a lot of festivities for us but we were invited to friends for a Halloween party so this year I need to up my game with costume!

      • Not really but I’m going to buy a black dress or long skirt that will fit anything and a friend of ours has a lot of gear like funny teeth and paste-on wounds and things like that but I’ll have to look for inspiration online. Ideally I need two costume variants because we also have a Halloween music session on the Tuesday that week! Last year I made it easy with a Scream mask!

  7. I would take another day off from running as well. I can’t remember if you have any races coming up that you’re trading for? I just always try to embrace the “big picture,” and not push things too much, especially if there’s no reason to do so. You’re maintaining your endurance and cardio with the walking and biking, so the running shouldn’t be difficult to resume when the time is right.

  8. Sounds like you were going to pass on Sunday run? Wouldn’t that be nice if we could predict that 1 run today would cause pain for 3 days, but 0 running today would guarantee you comfort for at least a week?? That’s the kind of Magic 8 ball runners need to have!

  9. Mmmm. I would probably take it easy on Sunday, just to make sure things were ok. We want that hip to be all the way better!

Looks like such a wonderful weekend, especially with your sweet boy’s birthday!
