Another Week out of Whack

When I originally started this post, I was writing about how it was good to have a full, normal week. Well, that unfortunately changed. GM once again had to have surgery — so Friday we spent the day again with him under anesthesia and having surgery. This time it was for his ear (he had a hole in his ear drum and they had to repair that and then remove his existing ear tube that had fallen through the hole into the middle ear). While it was a minor surgery, having 2 surgeries less than one month apart, was stressful for me as a mom. He did great (he’s so brave!), but I am hopeful that we will have a “normal” week again sometime soon. And fingers crossed this is our last surgery/anesthesia/etc. for a LONG TIME!

Here’s what the week looked like:

Sunday: Longest run since my hip injury — 8.03 mile run and 1.9 mi walk

It was 40 degrees and slightly sunny at 8 a.m., and I was planning on attempting a long run. I’m so grateful that I was able to sleep in and get in an 8 mile run before the day started! After I got home, I was able to also walk to the local bagel shop and bakery to pick up some breakfast and treats for the family, making it a pretty active morning. The best kind of start to my Sunday!

Monday: 2.1 mile treadmill run and 1.6 mile walk, upper body strength training (back, bicep, shoulder)

I got up early to get in some indoor miles. I knew I wanted to get in some strength training after a somewhat wacky week last week with my travel, and so I got in 35 minutes of weights, plus a little cardio. I didn’t want to do too much running, because I wanted to take it easyish after my Sunday long run.

Tuesday: 4.1 mile treadmill run, core, leg workout, 1 mile treadmill walk on incline

It was one of those busy days that the second it got started (a.k.a when the kids get up in my house) it was nonstop. It was school, work, leaving early to take Grant to a dr appt, back at work for a little, dinner, Girls Scouts … that said, I am GLAD I had a chance to get in my workout when I did because there was no time for lunch walks or anything during my day!

Wednesday: 3.1 treadmill run, core workout, 2 miles working/walking on treadmill

I woke up SO drowsy that it was hard to get out of bed! I got out of bed a little earlier, so when I finally did I was a little short on time. I did an 8 minute core video, then hopped on the treadmill. Running outside in the cold and dark did NOT appeal to me! I then got in 2 miles while working.

Thursday: 4.1 miles running on the treadmill, 1.92 mile walk with GM outside + 8 min abs

I still didn’t feel like getting out of the house or putting on warm clothes so I once again ran on the treadmill. GM also wanted to get a croissant so we decided to get in a walk before he went to school. We walked up to the bakery, got his croissant, and he ate that before going to school. He could’ve asked me for anything for breakfast – since it was the day before his surgery, I was happy to oblige with anything!

Friday:  Chest and tri workout, plus 4 mi treadmill run

I woke up early, ready for GM’s surgery.m, and got in a 4 mile treadmill run plus weights.  Then we had a relaxing day. After GM’s surgery, I spent most of the day relaxing/snuggling with him on the couch.

That night,  B and I had plans to go to the Cavs game and spend the night away in a hotel for his birthday. The plans had been made in September, and the kids were going to sleep at B’s parents’ house. I felt mixed about this — after GM’s surgery, should I still spend the night away? We ultimately decided to still go, and I’m glad. GM was feeling like himself again at night and the kids were very excited about their sleepover at their grandparents’ house.

Proof of parents’ life

Saturday: 4.12 miles outside downtown plus back and bicep workout

We had been up after midnight and I still woke up at 630 am! I laid in bed until B woke up around 8. He suggested I go running downtown, and I am glad he did – I got in a nice 4 mile run and then B suggested we go to the hotel gym, where I did my back and bicep workout with some abs. We also got in about a mile of walking downtown before heading to my fave breakfast/ lunch spot, Patron Saint Cafe, and then headed back to pick up the kids.

My beans and greens, plus B’s coffee drink (a Hey Arnold, which is cold brew shaken with lemon and simple syrup)

Total: 31.22 miles running, plus some walking and weights

Some questions for you:

  • Have you ever had coffee and lemonade ot citrus together?
  • Do you watch NBA games? Who do you root fot?

I am linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down.

  1. Looks like such a fun weekend for you! Aren’t you glad you went away for the night?

I’m so surprised about the ear tube falling into the middle ear canal. How did they discover it? Glad he’s ok.

    • He has regular ear checkups since they put the tubes in and discovered it on Monday’s check up. We were hoping to delay surgery until after our upcoming travels so he could enjoy the hotel pools, but they wanted to get in and fix it right away.

  2. Oh my gosh on the second surgery. I’m glad he’s rallying already, but the mom stress is real!

I have not heard of a Hey Arnold — my husb likes Arnold Palmers which are iced tea + lemonade, which sounds much more normal. 😉

  3. your son has had a rough go of it lately! Glad to read he is ok and so are you! Parents need a night off too-it’s okay. Never heard of that drink combo! Interesting

  4. Poor GM, it’s been a tough few weeks for him! It’s good to hear that he’s recovering well a second time, though.

Happy belated birthday to your hubby! Sounds like a fun night away!

  5. Ugh! Any kind of surgery is stressful. Glad everything worked out well and that you and hubby still got your time away. And, it sounds like your hip is all better?

I know black tea and lemonade go together well, but i’ve never heard of coffee and lemonade. I’m guessing it was pretty good!

  6. Glad to hear GM’s surgery went well and you were able to get out of town.

    Not an NBA fan.

What are your Thanksgiving plans Coming to Albany ay time soon?

  7. OMG, surgery again?? I can imagine it’s been stressful for you! But he looks happy and relaxed! So glad you could have that special night away, and also happy to hear your hip is doing well! 8 miles is a long run!

Coffee with citrus sounds odd to me, but sure why not, it works fine with tea!

  8. oh, another surgery… it’s nice he was such a good sport! We got lucky… no surgeries except for wisdom teeth extractions. Well, my son had his tonsils removed, but was in college at the time.
