A Little Holiday Running

A Little Holiday Running

Well, Christmas has come and gone and went too fast, just like it always does. The week was full of lots of good food, a little more baking and some wonderful family time. I truly love this time of year, and it’s always sad when it ends.

The week also included some weights, walking and running, including 2 outdoor runs! Here’s a look at the week’s activities:

Sunday: 8.1 treadmill miles and weights

Christmas week! I love kicking off a holiday week with a longish run and I was able to get in one on Sunday on the treadmill.

Monday: 5.01 treadmill miles

B had to work and go to a mass in the morning, so i set an alarm and got in 5 miles before he had to leave the house. I was home with the kids all day, and they were a little antsy- luckily I had planned lots of activities, and we got in lots of crafting and other activities, including a little cleaning, before my parents came into town that night!

Tuesday: 6.03 miles – broken up into some treadmill miles and outdoor miles and some weights

I set an alarm to get in a treadmill run early, but then GM woke up during my run. So I finished it and then when B got up, I decided to try running outside for a few miles — it was a little slick in specific spots but mostly ok.

Wednesday: 6.55 mile treadmill run, 2.07 mile outdoor walk

I got up to go for an outdoor run, but it was early and the dew on the street had turned to ice so I immediately returned home, changed, and hopped on the mill. Later, I did get in a walk with my parents and LM! There were still a few slippery spots but it was mostly all clear.

That afternoon, we had to get to church early – FW and LM were singing in the children’s choir at 4:30 mass! And then after mass, we headed to B’s parents’ house for Christmas Eve dinner – Italian wedding soup and meatballs!

Thursday: 5.06 miles outdoor running and 1.45 mile walk

Merry Christmas to ME! After the kids woke up and opened up gifts, I went out for a solo running with a new pair of my favorite running socks that my mom had gifted me.

It was chilly but dry and I enjoyed getting in a non-slippery run! That afternoon, we headed to B’s aunt and uncle’s house for Christmas dinner.

Friday: 3.6 miles on the treadmill and short walk

B and FW were up early to go to Detroit for a bowl game, and GM was feeling clingy, so I opted to run inside.  It took me almost an hour to get started on the run, so I kept it short.  We got in a very short walk with the kids, but it was rainy and GM wanted to be carried after a block or so,  so we didn’t make it very far. That night, GM got sick, so we pretty much stuck to relaxing and movies.

Saturday: 6.2 mile treadmill run

I set an alarm to run before GM woke up, and got in 6 miles before he stirred. He slept in until nearly 8:30! But he woke up feeling pretty good thankfully and we had an uneventful day.

Total:  40.6 miles running, plus some walking and weights

Some questions for you:

  • Are you doing anything for NYE?
  • Do you take time off for the holidays?

I am linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down.

Nice miles this week, Melissa! And oh, that black ice is the worst. It just sneaks up you. Glad you didn’t fall.

Looks like you had a wonderful Christmas! Your kids are the perfect age to make it special.

sounds like a really wonderful Christmas with your parents and your kids. You all look really happy! Way to keep those workouts up during a busy week. Yes, I do take some time off of the workouts every December while we travel. It helps my body to recover and start off the new year strong

That family photo is precious — you all look so festive! Italian wedding soup sounds like a perfect Christmas Eve dinner.

    I’m glad GM’s illness was short-lived.

I’ve gone all-in with down-time this week and barely thought about cracking open my work laptop. 😉

That’s great to take advantage of the downtime! I’ve also been really good about not opening my work laptop:-) when I go back to work on Friday we will see if that was a good decision.

It sounds like you had a fantastic Christmas and I love that your children sang in the children’s choir for the 4:30 mass. What time do you have to arrive to get a seat? We have to arrive around 3:15 to get a seat for our 4 PM Christmas Eve mass so we arrived at 5:25 for the 6 PM mass, but had the row to ourselves until 5:50, by 6 the church was full. Such a difference in attendance in those two times! We also have 8 and 10 PM and three services on Christmas Day and I bet those aren’t nearly as crowded.

Oh no, I’m so sorry to hear that your little on got sick – he’s had a rough end of the year!

I had to drop my kids off at 3:45 for the choir, and the church was already more than halfway full! Last year we got there at 4:10, and had to stand. If you get there after that, you might have to stand in the hallway behind the church. But the 6:30 mass is less crowded, if you get there at 6:20, there’s more than enough seats to choose from. Sounds like a similar situation for you!

Ugh. It feels like the holidays are when the kids get sick. No fun.

You had a busy, busy week, and gosh, it does look cold. Ice can be so scary, so I’m glad you stayed safe.

We will be home for NYE – The Miami Hurricanes are in the Cotton Bowl, so Mr PugRunner is locked in. His birthday is the next day, so I’m hoping for a win.

Looks like a fabulous and festive week! Nice pics of the family, too 😉

I agree, Christmas comes and goes so fast! My week was really busy, I barely had time to catch my breath, but it was great nonetheless. I had some time off from work last week, and also another short week in the office this coming week as well.

WOW. You ran 40 miles during Christmas week- that is impressive! I like how you call it a “little” holiday running : )

To answer your question- i’m doing a long run in the morning on NYE and then I plan to relax for the rest of the day. My son will be gone and my husband will be working, and my daughter will be with friends- and that’s fine with me!!! I can read my book. I would say I’ll be asleep by midnight, but I might have to be available for driving duties (sigh).

Hope no one else in your family gets sick!

That actually sounds like a lovely New Year’s eve! I’m sure I will be up until at least 1:30 in the morning and then up early the next day with the kids and regret all of my choices. It’s something I do every year:-)

Those are some beautiful photos of you and your family! Christmas certainly passes by quickly!

Very good mileage this week, is your hip feeling good now?

I have nothing planned for NYE! But I’ll follow my normal weekly routine next week (even if some of the workouts will be at home) so I guess I’m going to lift some weights.

My hip has so far been okay! I’m trying to listen to my body. My piriformis sometimes gets tight, so I’ve been using my massage gun and stretching when I remember.

Does watching the finale of Stranger Things count as “something to do” on NYE? If so, yep, that’s my plans! I think both of the college kids will be out doing something so it will just be a lowkey night for us.

I bet that was so precious to hear the kids singing at the church. Hope you have a great new year!
